Chapter 2

Autor: Arya
“Mrs. Bennett.” A hand closed gently around Mom’s wrist.

It was Chloe, my childhood sweetheart.

She was the daughter of our pack’s Alpha and Luna, and we had grown up together.

Standing outside my cell, Chloe frowned slightly.

“Mrs. Bennett, you know how stubborn Ethan can be. I don’t think anything you say right now is going to get through to him.”

She paused, then softened her voice as she spoke to me through the gap.

“Ethan, I know this feels unfair. But Ryan hasn’t done anything wrong either. Just this once, can you think about what this could do to him?”

I couldn’t answer.

I couldn’t move anymore.

The agony of my first shift and the silver poison were tearing through me at the same time.

My wolf thrashed wildly inside my mind. He was trying to save me.

Instinct drove him to force the transformation, as if the stronger healing of my wolf form might keep me alive.

But every time my bones began to change, the silver already inside me burned deeper.

I curled up on the floor, my wrists still locked in the chains.

Sweat soaked through my clothes.

I stared at that thin strip of light.

Mom. Open the door.

I was so close.

But then the light disappeared. The door shut again.

I heard Chloe sigh softly outside.

“Ethan, don’t be mad. Once Ryan gets through his first shift safely, I’ll come back and stay with you, okay?”

Their footsteps faded.

My wolf kept fighting to save me. My bones twisted beneath my skin. My nails sharpened into claws. But the silver had already reached my heart.

My wolf only managed half the transformation. His anguished howl inside my head grew weaker and weaker.

Then it disappeared completely.

My hand was still stretched toward the door when I stopped breathing.

Mom, if you had waited just a little longer, you would have found me.

As a spirit hovering in the air, I watched them usher Ryan out of the dungeon.

Mom straightened the clothes he would wear for the awakening ceremony and prepared a clean set for him to change into afterward.

Dad kept reminding him not to be afraid.

Chloe stayed by his side too.

All of them looked relieved.

By pack tradition, when a werewolf awakened at eighteen, their family and loved ones stayed with them.

The first shift was brutal. Bones reshaped. The wolf awakened.

Sometimes the transformation dragged on for hours.

So the family stayed close and helped them endure the worst of it.

Everyone had someone. Except me.

On the day I was supposed to awaken, I had been locked alone in a dungeon.

There, poisoned by silver, I went through my first shift.

And my last.

Mom. Dad.

You spent eighteen years trying to prevent Ryan’s death.

But what about mine?

My spirit followed them to the awakening ceremony.

Across the clearing, young wolves our age were surrounded by their families. Some screamed through the pain. Others had barely grown their first claws before their parents were crying with joy.

Ryan couldn’t sit still. His eyes kept drifting toward the dungeon.

Halfway through the ceremony, he finally grabbed Mom’s hand.

“I’m still worried about Ethan. He kept saying there was silver poison in there. Can we please go check on him?”

Mom frowned.

“Check on him for what? The silver was cleared out years ago. Right now, your awakening is what matters.”

Ryan tugged desperately at her sleeve.

Mom slapped him. Her eyes filled with tears.

“Your only job today is to make it through your awakening safely! Otherwise, what was the point of Ethan making this sacrifice for you?”

Ryan bit down hard on his lip.

Then Mom said, “Stay here. I’ll go get the blessing stone you forgot and check on your brother while I’m there.”

Only then did Ryan relax.

Mom returned home soon after. She picked up the blessing stone from his room, then went to the dungeon.

Her voice softened outside the door.

“Ethan, I know you’re angry. But everything we did was to protect your brother.”

“Just hold on a little longer. Once Ryan finishes his awakening, we’ll take a family trip. You can have anything you want. How does that sound?”

There was no answer.

Mom’s expression hardened.

“Ethan,” she said in a low voice. “When are you going to stop making everything about yourself?”

“Is proving how strong your wolf is really worth risking your brother’s life? How can you be this cruel?”

She struck the door hard as she spoke.

Then her hand suddenly stopped.

She frowned.

“What’s that strange smell in there?”

Her fingers closed around the handle. The door opened a crack.

One of my hands lay just within sight.

That night, Ryan fell asleep in front of the statue of the Moon Goddess.I stepped into his dream. For the first time since my death, he could see me.I was wearing clean clothes. There were no wounds around my wrists, no traces of the transformation that had failed to finish.I looked just as I had when I was alive, standing in a pool of brilliant moonlight.Ryan froze. Then he ran to me and wrapped his arms around me as tightly as he could.“Ethan—”He touched my face as if he needed to make sure I was real.“Ethan, I failed you. There were so many chances. I could have made Mom and Dad open that door.”“When the silver poison took hold... did it hurt?”I smiled and shook my head.“Ryan, it doesn't hurt anymore. Don't be sad.”He clung to me, crying too hard to speak.“I should have done more. I knew something was wrong. I shouldn't have backed down. I should have smashed that door open myself.”I took his hand.“Ryan, you did enough. You really did.”“Not once in eighteen years did

From that day on, Chloe was never the same.Every day, she came to the old dungeon and stood before the open iron door, calling my name over and over.“Ethan, I know you're still angry with me.”“Will you come out?”“Didn't we promise we'd go see the snow in the North after our awakening?”Her parents told her I was gone.Chloe acted as though she hadn't heard them. She came back the next day. This time, she sat outside the door with the awakening gift she'd meant to give me.“Ethan, I brought your gift.”“Don't be mad.”“Come out, and I'll give it to you right now.”She sat there the entire afternoon.Eventually, the Alpha and Luna came and took her home. For a long time afterward, she shut herself in her room and read through our old messages again and again....Ryan stayed beside me.He wouldn't let anyone near the ice coffin where my body lay. He simply held my rigid hand and talked to me for hours.“Ethan, I keep wondering why I couldn't have been better.”“If I'd been stronger,

She opened my notes and began reading them one by one.The first entry.[My training results came out today, but I don't feel happy at all. I did better than Ryan. I'm scared to go home. I don't know what to say if Mom asks. I'm afraid they'll think I was trying to upset Ryan again.]Mom stared at the date. I had been eleven. The second.[I got punished again. Mom kept asking why I always had to beat Ryan. It hurts. I really didn't do it on purpose. At least Ryan snuck me some food again. Maybe if I eat something, it won't hurt quite as much inside.]Ryan turned his face away. He remembered that night too.Mom kept scrolling. The third.[My instructor told me today that I might become one of the strongest young wolves of my generation. I said no. I can't. I'm scared. The last time I was chosen for the elite training group, Mom didn't speak to me for three days. I can't be better than Ryan. But I don't understand. I've tried so hard to be good. News of my death spread through the pack almost immediately. The elders and a Healer came to the dungeon. They removed my body from the chains. The Healer examined me carefully. At first, no one spoke. The Healer examined the blackened wounds around my wrists, then the bones that had begun to change before I died. His expression grew heavier.“Please,” Mom whispered. “What happened to my son?”The Healer looked at her.“His wolf awakened.”Mom froze.“What?”“Ethan began his first shift inside this dungeon.”“But he missed the awakening ceremony...”“The ceremony doesn't create the wolf. His body was ready, so the awakening began anyway.”He lifted one of my hands. My nails had never fully returned to normal.“These are signs of an interrupted transformation.”Ryan stared at my hand.“His wolf was trying to save him?”“Yes.”Mom shook her head. “Then why didn't he heal?”“Because the silver was already in his bloodstream. His wolf kept forcing the shift, but every attempt only pushed t

The dungeon door swung all the way open.My body lay curled against the freezing stone wall, my wrists still shackled in iron chains. The skin the silver poison had burned was already black. One hand was still stretched toward the door.Mom collapsed to the floor. She tried several times to get up, but her legs wouldn't hold her. In the end, she crawled. Her knees dragged across the cold stone as she made her way, inch by inch, to my body. She reached for my hand. Her fingertips met cold, rigid skin.“Ethan... how did this happen...?”Mom's voice shook so badly the words barely came out.“The silver poison was supposed to be gone... Ethan, my Ethan...”Then her gaze slowly dropped to my wrists. The black blood had already dried, with tiny flecks of silver embedded in the wounds.Even the chains around my wrists still glinted faintly with traces of silver.Something seemed to lodge in her throat. She couldn't make another sound. She just knelt there, trembling uncontrollably.Dad rushed

Ryan was awake, but he was still weak from his first shift.Every time he tried to get out of bed, mom forced him back down.By the next morning, he had recovered enough strength to stand. The moment he could keep his balance, he rushed out of the room.“Mom, Dad, I’m okay! The prophecy didn’t come true. Let’s go tell Ethan!”Dad nodded, his eyes reddening.“Yes. It’s over now. Let’s go home. Ethan has been in that dungeon for two days. He should have had enough time to think about what he did.”“We’ll pick him up, and then the whole family can go to the Moon Goddess Temple and pray together.”Tears slipped down Mom’s cheeks.“I know I’ve been hard on Ethan. But if he finally learns from this, then from now on, whatever Ryan gets, he’ll get too.”I hovered beside them and smiled, though it hurt more than crying ever could.Mom. Dad.I had waited eighteen years to hear that. Too bad I would never live to see it.They returned home soon after.Ryan ran ahead of everyone. Then he stopped.
