Chapter 3

Author: Goldie Lane
Evan threw himself into Mom's and Dad's arms and cried until he was out of breath.

"I just wanted to apologize to Jasper, but he suddenly rushed out to hit me! He even called me a bastard and accused me of deliberately stealing both of you away from him! He also said… He said that you were the world's most useless parents, and he's been done with you two for a while now!

"He cut the power on purpose to prevent me from filling out my application form! He wanted to ruin my life!"

He showed off the handprint on his face and added, "Mom, Dad, I'm really scared!"

I rushed in front of my parents and yelled desperately, "Mom, Dad, I didn't do it! Evan's lying! I didn't hit him! How can I when I'm already dead?"

Yet, nobody heard my voice.

Mom was trembling with rage.

"And to think I was worried about him all this time! I never imagined I'd suffered this many years only to raise an ungrateful wretch!"

Dad swiped a hand down his face and declared, "It looks like we've really spoiled Jasper."

I stood rooted to the spot, tears streaming endlessly down my face.

"I didn't do it! I'm not a rotten kid! I'm not an ungrateful wretch!"

Dad gently wiped Evan's tears away and said, "Evan, don't cry. I bought a cake that we can eat together. Let's just ignore Jasper."

Evan finally broke into a smile at this and nodded obediently. He cut a slice of cake for both Mom and Dad.

"Mom, Dad, I'm the happiest child in the world right now," he said.

I sat in an empty chair nearby, envy written all over my face.

That was my favorite strawberry cake, after all. I could almost smell the fragrance of the whipped cream.

However, Mom gently refused the cake.

"You can have it, Evan. I can't eat it because it contains eggs," she explained.

She lowered her gaze and continued, "I once swore before the cross that I would live a vegetarian lifestyle in exchange for Jasper's well-being."

My eyes welled with tears, and I feebly tried to wrap my arms around her.

My heart ached terribly to see several new strands of graying hair on her head.

Dad sighed. Eventually, he walked over to my bedroom door with a plate of cake in hand.

He knocked on the door, then said in a tired and exasperated voice, "Please knock it off, Jasper. As long as you apologize to Evan, we'll forgive you. So will you please come out and eat something?"

Yet, the dead could not answer.

After waiting for a while, he had no choice but to place the cake before the door.

Mom's anger flared up again.

She stabbed a large slice of cake with her fork and stuffed it into her mouth, then said in a deliberately raised voice, "If he won't eat it, we will! Ignore him. It's not like he's my only son."

I bit my lip, my fingernails digging into my palms.

That's right. It was a good thing my parents still had Evan, because then they wouldn't be too sad about me.

Just then, the landline started ringing.

Mom plastered a smile on her face and answered the call.

"Ms. Wagner! Don't worry. Evan has submitted his college application form," she said into the phone.

My homeroom teacher, Maria Wagner, replied, "That's good. What about Jasper? Did he decide to apply to Hareford University or Maracus Institute of Technology?"

In the end, Mom and Dad decided to sign an Affidavit of Non-Prosecution.That night, they sat in the living room for an entire night with neither of them saying a word.Evan hid in his bedroom and wouldn't come out no matter who knocked on his door. The broadcasted footage had already gone viral by that afternoon. It stayed on the list of trending topics for the entire day, and the comment sections were complete chaos. There were some who criticized Mom and Dad for favoritism while others rebuked Evan for being selfish and cold-blooded.A neighbor recognized me from the broadcast and flagged down Mom at the elevator to say, "I only just saw him the day before yesterday. How is he suddenly gone? What exactly happened?"Mom simply glanced expressionlessly at her.Once Mom reached home, she blocked all her neighbors and relatives' numbers without exception.Dad's hair seemed to turn gray overnight, like withered grass that had been struck by frost overnight, and his back seemed to

Dad whipped around, his eyes bloodshot, and asked, "What did you say?"Mom's lips trembled, tears streaming down her face."It was me… I was the one who took Jasper's battery away!" she confessed.Dad trembled from head to toe. When he spoke, getting the words out was like pulling teeth. "You were the one who took his heart battery out? You clearly knew his heart relied on the battery to operate! You knew, so why did you do it? Why?"Mom covered her face with her hands and curled up."The power went out at the time, but Evan's college application deadline was approaching, so I thought it'd be fine to use it for a moment. I thought he'd be fine once the power came back, and we clearly still had a spare battery," she explained.Dad looked like he was on the verge of a breakdown."Fine? You told me last night that he was jealous of Evan and hid in his room to sulk. Did you know he was bleeding out on the floor inside? Did you know he was asking for help?" he asked accusingly.Mom

A doctor kneeled down and put on gloves, then meticulously examined my body.Mom and Dad watched his movements closely, praying for a miracle.Yet, the doctor fell silent for several seconds before taking off his mask and standing up.He announced, "My condolences to the family. The young man has been dead for a while."Dad was stunned. It was as if he hadn't understood the doctor's words. From where he was kneeling on the floor, he looked up at the doctor and asked, "What did you say?"The doctor sighed and explained, "You found him too late."Dad's gaze suddenly went blank. Then, he shot to his feet and grabbed the doctor by his large white coat."Impossible! Look closer, doctor! My son was perfectly fine last night! He's not dead! I'll give you however much you want, so won't you please use your best medicines on him? I can sell the house! Just please save him! He's only 18 years old…"I stood next to Dad, watching him hunched up in a kneeling position on the floor. My hea

Mom lunged forward to hug me, getting blood all over herself. She held my face in her hands and wailed heartbreakingly, "Jasper! My son! What happened to you? Open your eyes and look at me!"She shoved aside a reporter standing next to her in a daze and rummaged through the cabinet in the corner of the room, looking frenzied. She didn't even seem to notice the broken glass shards cutting into her fingers, leaving bloody slices behind. She grabbed one of my spare heart batteries and scrambled to connect it to my artificial heart."Don't worry, Jasper! I'm here! Now that I'm here, everything will be fine!"However, the artificial heart remained still, the battery's indicator light a lifeless gray.Mom attempted to connect it a few more times, but there was still no response. She finally lowered her head and looked properly at the battery to see that the internal wiring had long since been broken. A thick layer of dust had accumulated around the entry port. She clutched the long-

Upon hearing my name from Ms. Wagner, Mom refused to listen to the rest of her question and simply brushed her off with a vague answer."Jasper? Given his scores, does it matter which college he wants to apply to? It makes no difference."She then hung up without waiting for Ms. Wagner's reply.I stood where I was in a daze, feeling devastated."Mom, I scored highest among every candidate in the city! I didn't let you and Dad down! Why aren't you willing to even ask about it? Do you really not love me anymore?" I asked aloud.Dad looked greatly disappointed."I've never asked for Jasper to have good grades. All I ask is that he stays healthy and that our family can live in harmony. I simply don't understand how he turned out like this," he said.I felt aggrieved. It was as if someone had stabbed me with a rusty knife and twisted it, the pain bringing tears to my eyes.Dinner was a quiet, somber affair. Still, Mom and Dad left a meal for me outside my bedroom before retiring for
