Chapter 2

작가: Shea
That night, I didn't sign the agreement. It wasn't because I couldn't bear to leave this household, but because I had an appointment for a psychological evaluation the following morning.

A month ago, I started hearing someone's cries in the middle of the night. That voice sounded a lot like my childhood self. The little girl kept asking me why Mom didn't love her.

Sometimes, when I stood before the window of my classroom on the tenth floor, a terrifying thought would cross my mind. Would everything come to an end if I finally took that one final step?

I was scared out of my wits. Thus, without telling my family, I reached out to the hospital.

The next morning, I was about to head out when Mom stood in my way. "Where are you off to?"

"School."

She snatched the document folder out of my hand. My appointment slip fell out.

The moment her eyes landed on the words "Department of Psychiatry", her expression twisted with rage. "What's the meaning of this?"

I bent down to pick it up. "I haven't been feeling well lately, so I want to go get checked out."

"You haven't been feeling well?" Mom abruptly raised her voice. "What's wrong with you?"

I balled my hands into fists. "I can't sleep, and I keep hearing voices in my head. The doctor said it might be depression."

As soon as my words fell, she burst into laughter. She laughed so hard tears glistened at the corners of her eyes. "Depression? Danica, as if you have the right to be depressed!"

I froze.

Mom ripped the appointment slip to shreds and hurled it at my face. "I've been suffering from postpartum depression for 18 years, and now you want to be depressed too? Why do you have to steal everything from me? Was your father and the whole family's attention not enough? Now, you've gone as far as to copy my illness!"

I parted my lips. "I'm not copying you."

"In that case, why did you have to fall ill now of all times? Why did it have to happen right when I asked you to move out?"

Mom seized my chin, forcing me to look her in the eye. "You realized playing the victim wasn't getting you anywhere, so now you're pretending to be nuts, aren't you? You want everyone to think that we drove you crazy. You want to turn me from the victim into the villain!"

Grandpa and Grandma heard our argument and emerged from the dining room. Grasping at my last straw, I showed them the text message from the hospital. "I'm not lying. The doctor told me to come in for an evaluation as soon as possible."

Grandma only took one look at it. "You call that a diagnosis? You merely chatted with some random doctor online for a few minutes. When your mother has an episode, she cries, she screams, and she even self-harms with a knife. What do you ever do besides sit there with a stoic face? Have you ever seen someone with depression that quiet?"

I wanted to tell her that quiet people feel pain too. However, Mom had already snatched my phone away and flung it onto the ground. The screen shattered instantly.

"I forbid you from going! There can only be one patient in this house. If you're sick as well, who's going to make it up to me for these 18 years?"

Dad happened to descend the stairs at that moment.

Paying no mind to my broken phone, I rushed over and grasped his hand. "Please come to the hospital with me, Dad. I seriously don't feel so well. Last night, the voice in my head told me to end my life again!"

A flash of panic crossed Dad's face. He glanced at the time, seemingly intent on getting me out of there.

Mom, however, walked straight into the kitchen and picked up a fruit knife. Pressing the blade flush against her throat, she said calmly, "Douglas Langston, if you dare take her to the hospital today, you'll come home to a corpse."

Dad immediately let go of my hand.

My palm suddenly felt empty. I stood rooted to the spot and felt as though I was three years old all over again.

That day, he had held my hand as he took me to kindergarten. Mom had also held a knife, forcing him to choose between us.

In the end, he pried my fingers apart and told me to go on my own. 15 years later, he still made the exact same choice.

Dad slowly backed up to Mom's side. "Evelyn, put the knife down. I won't take her to the hospital anymore."

A faint smile crept onto Mom's face. She tossed the knife into the sink and looked at me over Dad's shoulder. "Did you hear that? Even your father knows that your little discomfort isn't as important as my life!"

Grandma patted her back and comforted her softly. "Fear not, sweetheart. We will always be on your side."

I looked down at my empty hand and suddenly asked Dad, "What about me? What am I supposed to do?"

Dad avoided my gaze. "Go back to your room and calm down. Don't spout such things in front of your mom again."

"What if I really end up dead?" I pressed.

Mom sneered. "Quit bluffing. You're far too selfish to take your own life."

Dad's forehead creased. His patience wore thin. "That's enough! Stop provoking your mom."

I took in the four people in front of me and suddenly understood that when Mom said she wanted to die, it was an emergency that required the entire family to rush to save her. Yet, when I told them I wanted to die, I was merely triggering her. I didn't even have the right to cry for help.

  • Mom's Only Wish: Erase Me   Chapter 10

Mom fell silent for a long while. She didn't scream like she used to, nor did she threaten to kill herself to manipulate me emotionally. She simply sat on the floor and looked up at me. "That's fine. You have every right not to forgive me." She wiped away her tears, her voice barely above a whisper. "In that case, can you stay a little longer? I've never really taken the time to look at you." I didn't answer. The sky outside the window slowly began to brighten. Sunlight filtered through the glass and fell upon my body. I lowered my head and took a good look at Mom for the first time. She seemed to have aged a lot overnight. For the last 18 years, she had always been the princess in this family who needed to be protected. Grandpa and Grandma had indulged her. Dad had always accommodated her. I, on the other hand, had borne everything she refused to face. Now that I was dead, she could no longer shift the blame onto anyone else. …After Mom was discharged from the hospit

Mom was admitted to the psychiatric department. Dr. Campbell went through her medical records from the past 18 years and reorganized them. On the day of the family interview, Dad, Grandpa, and Grandma all came. I sat beside Mom and heard Dr. Campbell ask, "Ms. Sanders, on the tenth day after you gave birth, the hospital recommended that you be transferred to a specialist for treatment. Why did you refuse?" Mom looked at Grandma in confusion. She had been frail back then and couldn't remember much of what had happened. Grandma's eyes darted around. "Evelyn isn't a lunatic. Why would she need to see a psychiatrist? She just had a baby and was in a bad mood. She just needed to go home and rest." Dr. Campbell flipped to the next page. "When your daughter was three, Ms. Sanders threatened to hurt herself with a sharp object for the very first time. The doctor once again recommended that she be hospitalized, but her family refused." Dad explained quietly, "My company had just gone

It didn't take long for my high school to reach out to Dad. My homeroom teacher, Ms. Clark, arrived at the rental apartment with a cardboard box. Realizing how many people were there, her expression turned frighteningly cold. "I've brought Danica's belongings."The box contained a handful of textbooks, a school uniform, three competition awards, and an early college acceptance letter. Dad picked up the offer letter. His hands trembled so violently he could barely hold it.Riverdale Teachers College was the college I had wanted to attend since middle school. I had listed it as my first choice on the college preference form Mom had torn up.Ms. Clark said, "Danica's an excellent student. The school was willing to sign an early development agreement with her. She was supposed to come in today to confirm it." Mom stared at my name on the letter, her lips quivering. "She never told me."Ms. Clark jeered. "How would she dare to tell you? Last year, she won first place in the essa

My body was taken for an autopsy. Mom refused to let the staff cover me with the white cloth. She insisted that I was just asleep. After the doctor made it clear that there was no way I could recover, she collapsed in the corridor, as if all the strength had been drained from her. The cops wanted to know what had happened before I left home. Dad remained silent for a long time before handing them the household separation agreement. Grandma immediately stopped him. "This is a family matter. There's no need to tell them everything." The female officer in charge of the interrogation frowned. "The deceased clearly expressed suicidal thoughts before leaving home, yet you didn't take any action. This is no longer just a family matter!" Mom jerked her head up as if she'd been stabbed. "She never explicitly said that. She just wanted to manipulate us emotionally!"The female officer flipped open her notebook. "What exactly did the deceased say at the time?" Silence fell over the

It had never crossed my mind that even after learning of my death, her first words would still be to blame me. Mom threw herself beside the stretcher before grabbing my shoulders and shaking me violently. "How dare you die? I told you to move out. I never told you to use your death to frame me! It's supposed to be the first day of my new life today, and you just had to die today. You did this on purpose, didn't you?"The police officer could no longer stand it and pulled her away. "Please show some respect for the deceased." Mom thrashed wildly and screamed, "She's my daughter. I can treat her however I want!" This time, no one indulged her. The looks from the strangers around her finally made her realize what she'd just said. All of a sudden, she fell silent. For the first time in 18 years, she'd admitted in public that I was her daughter. Yet, I could no longer hear how sincere she was.The park attendant handed the tin box he'd found to the police officer. "These cards wer

As soon as their words fell, Dad froze as if someone had pressed the pause button on him. He held his phone to his ear and froze in place for what felt like an eternity. Mom was still at the dining table with a plate of spaghetti Grandma had specially made for her, sitting in front of her. They were supposed to celebrate her getting rid of me and starting a brand new life. She wound a forkful of spaghetti around her fork and fumed, "Is it Danica? Has she already regretted leaving us after only a few hours? Listen here, you're not allowed to bring her back!"Dad's lips quivered. "The cops said… Danica's dead."The dining room fell pin-drop silent. Grandma's spoon slipped from her hand and fell into her bowl, splashing grease across the surface. Mom froze for a few seconds before bursting out laughing. "Do you actually believe her? She was talking back to me just yesterday. How could she possibly be dead today? She must've paid someone to put on an act to force us to take her b
