Chapter 1

Author: Shea
The moment I wrote the last word, the door was kicked open from the outside.

Mom stood at the threshold, looking at me coldly. "What are you doing here?"

I instinctively closed the tin box. "Nothing."

She didn't buy it for a second. She strode over, snatched the tin from my hands, and dumped all the birthday cards inside onto the floor.

18 colorful cards scattered around her feet. Mom casually picked one up.

It was one I had written when I was seven. "Mom cried for three hours today. From now on, when Dad picks me up from school, I'll get out at the entrance to the neighborhood so Mom won't see me."

After reading it, her expression hardened. "Why did you write these? Are you planning to show them to other people so everyone will know I'm a terrible mother?"

I hurriedly shook my head. "I wasn't going to show anyone."

"In that case, why are you keeping them?" She lifted her foot and stepped on the cards, grinding them under her shoe. "I knew you were calculating, Danica Langston! You pretend to be sensible on the surface, but behind my back, you write down everything I've ever said."

I crouched down to pick the cards back up.

Mom booted the tin box aside. "Hands off! These cards are all evidence you're collecting to use against me, aren't they?"

I was shoved so hard by her that I tumbled backward onto the floor.

Grandma rushed in when she heard the commotion. She bent down and flipped through the cards. "Evelyn's right. Who in their right mind would keep track of ancient history from 18 years ago? It's obvious that she loathes you!"

I couldn't help but retort, "I don't loathe her."

There wasn't a single line of accusation on those cards. I was simply keeping track of my wishes every year.

I wished Mom would cry a little less. I wished she would take her medication on time. I wished that one day, she would be willing to call me by my nickname.

Unfortunately, no one cared to listen.

Grandma seized my arm. "Drop the act! Your mother was finally having a good day, and yet you hide in your room writing this depressing crap. Do you have to drive her to death before you're satisfied?"

Mom looked at me with red-rimmed eyes. "Didn't you agree to move out? Pack your belongings right now!"

I was caught off guard. "Right now?"

"You heard me."

"But tomorrow's the last day to submit my college preferences. My ID and documents are still in Dad's study. Can I leave after I submit them?"

Mom burst into laughter. "You want to attend college?"

The very next second, she yanked open my desk drawer and pulled out the college preference forms I had printed. "You've made my life miserable for 18 years, and now you think you can merrily go to a college in another city? Why do you think you deserve that?"

I charged at her to snatch it back. Yet, right in front of my eyes, she tore the form in half.

Mom went through all three documents before scattering the shreds of paper all over the floor. I went rigid.

I had spent two whole months researching these schools. Riverdale Teachers College, my first choice, was the college I had dreamed of attending since middle school.

Mom hurled the last piece of paper in my face. "I almost died on the operating table when I brought you into this world. How dare you use the life I nearly lost to go to college, celebrate your birthday, and build a future for yourself? If you had half a heart, you'd stay here and take care of me. But all you ever think about is how to get away from me!"

At last, I snapped. "What on earth do you want from me? Do you want me to stay, or do you want me gone for good?"

The room fell silent.

Mom stared at me, her lips trembling slightly.

In a heartbeat, she grabbed the box cutter from my desk and pressed it against her wrist. "So I'm a burden to you now? Fine! I'll kill myself right now. Once I'm dead, no one will stop you from going to whatever college you want!"

Dad and Grandpa barged into the room at the sound of the commotion.

Dad snatched the box cutter away and pulled Mom into a tight embrace.

Grandpa raised his hand and slapped me across the face. "How dare you talk to your mother like that?"

My cheek instantly burned.

Mom curled up in Dad's arms, sobbing so hard that her whole body trembled.

Dad comforted her while looking at me in disappointment. "Danica, you know very well how fragile your mother is. Why do you insist on talking back to her?"

I gazed at him. "She tore up my college preference form."

"The form can be printed again. But if something happens to your mom, how are you going to make up for that?"

So, my future could simply be printed again. Yet, every tear Mom shed had to be paid for with my life.

Grandma pulled a household separation agreement out of her bag and tossed it in front of me. "Sign it and move out tonight."

I didn't take it.

Mom's sobs came to a sudden halt. Her gaze was ice-cold as she peered over Dad's shoulder at me. "What, are you not willing to sign it? You claim you want me to get better, but when you're actually asked to do something for me, you can't bring yourself to do it?"

I lowered my head to look at the agreement.

"Danica, you've been responsible for my illness for 18 years. You don't actually think that just because you're an adult, you can just walk away scot-free, do you?" she jeered.

Mom fell silent for a long while. She didn't scream like she used to, nor did she threaten to kill herself to manipulate me emotionally. She simply sat on the floor and looked up at me. "That's fine. You have every right not to forgive me." She wiped away her tears, her voice barely above a whisper. "In that case, can you stay a little longer? I've never really taken the time to look at you." I didn't answer. The sky outside the window slowly began to brighten. Sunlight filtered through the glass and fell upon my body. I lowered my head and took a good look at Mom for the first time. She seemed to have aged a lot overnight. For the last 18 years, she had always been the princess in this family who needed to be protected. Grandpa and Grandma had indulged her. Dad had always accommodated her. I, on the other hand, had borne everything she refused to face. Now that I was dead, she could no longer shift the blame onto anyone else. …After Mom was discharged from the hospit

Mom was admitted to the psychiatric department. Dr. Campbell went through her medical records from the past 18 years and reorganized them. On the day of the family interview, Dad, Grandpa, and Grandma all came. I sat beside Mom and heard Dr. Campbell ask, "Ms. Sanders, on the tenth day after you gave birth, the hospital recommended that you be transferred to a specialist for treatment. Why did you refuse?" Mom looked at Grandma in confusion. She had been frail back then and couldn't remember much of what had happened. Grandma's eyes darted around. "Evelyn isn't a lunatic. Why would she need to see a psychiatrist? She just had a baby and was in a bad mood. She just needed to go home and rest." Dr. Campbell flipped to the next page. "When your daughter was three, Ms. Sanders threatened to hurt herself with a sharp object for the very first time. The doctor once again recommended that she be hospitalized, but her family refused." Dad explained quietly, "My company had just gone

It didn't take long for my high school to reach out to Dad. My homeroom teacher, Ms. Clark, arrived at the rental apartment with a cardboard box. Realizing how many people were there, her expression turned frighteningly cold. "I've brought Danica's belongings."The box contained a handful of textbooks, a school uniform, three competition awards, and an early college acceptance letter. Dad picked up the offer letter. His hands trembled so violently he could barely hold it.Riverdale Teachers College was the college I had wanted to attend since middle school. I had listed it as my first choice on the college preference form Mom had torn up.Ms. Clark said, "Danica's an excellent student. The school was willing to sign an early development agreement with her. She was supposed to come in today to confirm it." Mom stared at my name on the letter, her lips quivering. "She never told me."Ms. Clark jeered. "How would she dare to tell you? Last year, she won first place in the essa

My body was taken for an autopsy. Mom refused to let the staff cover me with the white cloth. She insisted that I was just asleep. After the doctor made it clear that there was no way I could recover, she collapsed in the corridor, as if all the strength had been drained from her. The cops wanted to know what had happened before I left home. Dad remained silent for a long time before handing them the household separation agreement. Grandma immediately stopped him. "This is a family matter. There's no need to tell them everything." The female officer in charge of the interrogation frowned. "The deceased clearly expressed suicidal thoughts before leaving home, yet you didn't take any action. This is no longer just a family matter!" Mom jerked her head up as if she'd been stabbed. "She never explicitly said that. She just wanted to manipulate us emotionally!"The female officer flipped open her notebook. "What exactly did the deceased say at the time?" Silence fell over the

It had never crossed my mind that even after learning of my death, her first words would still be to blame me. Mom threw herself beside the stretcher before grabbing my shoulders and shaking me violently. "How dare you die? I told you to move out. I never told you to use your death to frame me! It's supposed to be the first day of my new life today, and you just had to die today. You did this on purpose, didn't you?"The police officer could no longer stand it and pulled her away. "Please show some respect for the deceased." Mom thrashed wildly and screamed, "She's my daughter. I can treat her however I want!" This time, no one indulged her. The looks from the strangers around her finally made her realize what she'd just said. All of a sudden, she fell silent. For the first time in 18 years, she'd admitted in public that I was her daughter. Yet, I could no longer hear how sincere she was.The park attendant handed the tin box he'd found to the police officer. "These cards wer

As soon as their words fell, Dad froze as if someone had pressed the pause button on him. He held his phone to his ear and froze in place for what felt like an eternity. Mom was still at the dining table with a plate of spaghetti Grandma had specially made for her, sitting in front of her. They were supposed to celebrate her getting rid of me and starting a brand new life. She wound a forkful of spaghetti around her fork and fumed, "Is it Danica? Has she already regretted leaving us after only a few hours? Listen here, you're not allowed to bring her back!"Dad's lips quivered. "The cops said… Danica's dead."The dining room fell pin-drop silent. Grandma's spoon slipped from her hand and fell into her bowl, splashing grease across the surface. Mom froze for a few seconds before bursting out laughing. "Do you actually believe her? She was talking back to me just yesterday. How could she possibly be dead today? She must've paid someone to put on an act to force us to take her b
