Chapter 3

Author: Shea
That afternoon, Dad snuck into my room. He stuffed a debit card into my hand. "There's 50,000 dollars in here. Stay somewhere else for now. Once your mom's condition stabilizes, I'll take you to the hospital." He lowered his voice, as if he was afraid someone might hear him.

I looked at the card and suddenly remembered my childhood. Every time Mom beat me, he would secretly slip me some money.

At times, it was 50 dollars. Other times, it was 100 dollars. The most he had ever given me was 500 dollars.

He always told me to buy something I liked, as if money could hug me in his place and apologize to me on his behalf.

"Dad, will you really come after me?"

He hesitated for a moment. "I will."

"When?"

"Once your mom gets a little better."

I had heard those words for 18 years.

Once Mom got a little better, Dad would take me to the amusement park.

Once Mom got a little better, we would take a family portrait.

Once Mom got a little better, she would slowly come to love me.

However, she never got better, and I never got what I had been waiting for.

Still, I accepted the card and started packing my belongings.

I wanted to live.

Even without my family, I wanted to go to the hospital. I wanted to go to college. I wanted to see what life was actually like for normal 18-year-olds.

However, the moment I wheeled my suitcase into the living room, Mom came home. The first thing she saw was the debit card in my hand. "Where did you get that?"

Dad's expression changed in an instant. "It's a college enrollment bonus the company gave Danica."

Mom snatched it away and confronted him. "What kind of company would hand 50,000 dollars to someone who hasn't even started working there? Why are you giving her money behind my back? Are you trying to support her without my knowledge?"

Dad wanted to explain himself, but she snapped the debit card in half. "No wonder she refused to sign the agreement. Turns out, you two had everything planned from the very beginning. You're going to leave me at home while you and your daughter go off to enjoy the good life!"

Mom lunged at my suitcase and dumped all my clothes out. I had three T-shirts, two pairs of faded jeans, and my high school uniform.

Mom rummaged through my belongings for a while, but she couldn't find anything valuable enough to match what she'd had in mind. Her eyes landed on a thick loose-leaf binder.

I immediately stepped forward to grab it. "Don't touch that!"

That only made her tighten her grip on it. "What is it this time? Another piece of evidence against me?"

The binder was flipped open, revealing page after page of her medical records.

When Mom suffered from insomnia, she would repeatedly check the locks on the doors.

If she missed her medication for two days in a row, she must not be allowed near sharp objects.

When she had an emotional breakdown, we shouldn't argue with her. We should dim the lights and play the piano music she liked.

I remembered all her episodes and all the changes in her medication over the last few years like it was yesterday.

Mom flipped through a few pages before hurling the binder at my face. "Are you spying on me?"

"No."

"Don't you dare lie to me!" She grabbed the binder and tossed it straight into the ornamental fish tank in the living room.

The ink hastily bled into the water. Like a madwoman, I rushed over and fished the binder out.

The pages were completely soaked through. Much of my handwriting had blurred into indistinct blue smudges.

"Why did you throw it away?" For the first time in 18 years, I yelled at her. "Who reminded you to take your medication every time you had an episode? Who stayed outside the bathroom when you locked yourself in there in the middle of the night?

"Dad doesn't even know what medication you take, and Grandpa and Grandma only ever indulge you. All these years, I'm the one who's genuinely wanted you to get better!"

The living room fell dead silent.

Mom stared long and hard at me. For a second, I thought she would be moved.

Yet, she abruptly raised her hand and slapped me hard across the face. "Isn't that what you're supposed to do? Why do you think I fell ill in the first place? It's because I gave birth to you! Even if you took care of me for the rest of your life, you still wouldn't be able to repay the life you owe me!"

A loud ringing filled my ears, but she continued, "Don't act like you're some saint just because you've fed me my medication a few times. If you genuinely wanted me to get better, you wouldn't show your face in front of me every day.

"Every year, on your birthday, I'm reminded of how much I suffered just to give birth to you. The happier you are, the more successful you become, and the brighter your future looks, the more you remind me that you ruined my entire life!"

Dad finally broke his silence. "That's enough, Evelyn!"

Mom whipped her head around. "What, does your heart ache for her? In that case, get the hell out with her! The second you two step out that door, I'll jump out the window!"

Grandma immediately snatched my suitcase away. She dug my ID out of my pocket. "Let's wait until Evelyn calms down first. Who knows what kind of trouble you'll get yourself into after running off with all this stuff?"

I watched as she locked my ID and the broken pieces of the bank card in a cabinet.

The front door was double-locked. My suitcase was confiscated. My phone was smashed.

All of them wanted me to leave, yet they made sure I had no way to actually get out.

Mom leaned against Dad's chest, looking all triumphant again. "What makes you think you're entitled to an easy life, Danica?" she asked, looking me in the eye.

Mom fell silent for a long while. She didn't scream like she used to, nor did she threaten to kill herself to manipulate me emotionally. She simply sat on the floor and looked up at me. "That's fine. You have every right not to forgive me." She wiped away her tears, her voice barely above a whisper. "In that case, can you stay a little longer? I've never really taken the time to look at you." I didn't answer. The sky outside the window slowly began to brighten. Sunlight filtered through the glass and fell upon my body. I lowered my head and took a good look at Mom for the first time. She seemed to have aged a lot overnight. For the last 18 years, she had always been the princess in this family who needed to be protected. Grandpa and Grandma had indulged her. Dad had always accommodated her. I, on the other hand, had borne everything she refused to face. Now that I was dead, she could no longer shift the blame onto anyone else. …After Mom was discharged from the hospit

Mom was admitted to the psychiatric department. Dr. Campbell went through her medical records from the past 18 years and reorganized them. On the day of the family interview, Dad, Grandpa, and Grandma all came. I sat beside Mom and heard Dr. Campbell ask, "Ms. Sanders, on the tenth day after you gave birth, the hospital recommended that you be transferred to a specialist for treatment. Why did you refuse?" Mom looked at Grandma in confusion. She had been frail back then and couldn't remember much of what had happened. Grandma's eyes darted around. "Evelyn isn't a lunatic. Why would she need to see a psychiatrist? She just had a baby and was in a bad mood. She just needed to go home and rest." Dr. Campbell flipped to the next page. "When your daughter was three, Ms. Sanders threatened to hurt herself with a sharp object for the very first time. The doctor once again recommended that she be hospitalized, but her family refused." Dad explained quietly, "My company had just gone

It didn't take long for my high school to reach out to Dad. My homeroom teacher, Ms. Clark, arrived at the rental apartment with a cardboard box. Realizing how many people were there, her expression turned frighteningly cold. "I've brought Danica's belongings."The box contained a handful of textbooks, a school uniform, three competition awards, and an early college acceptance letter. Dad picked up the offer letter. His hands trembled so violently he could barely hold it.Riverdale Teachers College was the college I had wanted to attend since middle school. I had listed it as my first choice on the college preference form Mom had torn up.Ms. Clark said, "Danica's an excellent student. The school was willing to sign an early development agreement with her. She was supposed to come in today to confirm it." Mom stared at my name on the letter, her lips quivering. "She never told me."Ms. Clark jeered. "How would she dare to tell you? Last year, she won first place in the essa

My body was taken for an autopsy. Mom refused to let the staff cover me with the white cloth. She insisted that I was just asleep. After the doctor made it clear that there was no way I could recover, she collapsed in the corridor, as if all the strength had been drained from her. The cops wanted to know what had happened before I left home. Dad remained silent for a long time before handing them the household separation agreement. Grandma immediately stopped him. "This is a family matter. There's no need to tell them everything." The female officer in charge of the interrogation frowned. "The deceased clearly expressed suicidal thoughts before leaving home, yet you didn't take any action. This is no longer just a family matter!" Mom jerked her head up as if she'd been stabbed. "She never explicitly said that. She just wanted to manipulate us emotionally!"The female officer flipped open her notebook. "What exactly did the deceased say at the time?" Silence fell over the

It had never crossed my mind that even after learning of my death, her first words would still be to blame me. Mom threw herself beside the stretcher before grabbing my shoulders and shaking me violently. "How dare you die? I told you to move out. I never told you to use your death to frame me! It's supposed to be the first day of my new life today, and you just had to die today. You did this on purpose, didn't you?"The police officer could no longer stand it and pulled her away. "Please show some respect for the deceased." Mom thrashed wildly and screamed, "She's my daughter. I can treat her however I want!" This time, no one indulged her. The looks from the strangers around her finally made her realize what she'd just said. All of a sudden, she fell silent. For the first time in 18 years, she'd admitted in public that I was her daughter. Yet, I could no longer hear how sincere she was.The park attendant handed the tin box he'd found to the police officer. "These cards wer

  • Mom's Only Wish: Erase Me   Chapter 5

As soon as their words fell, Dad froze as if someone had pressed the pause button on him. He held his phone to his ear and froze in place for what felt like an eternity. Mom was still at the dining table with a plate of spaghetti Grandma had specially made for her, sitting in front of her. They were supposed to celebrate her getting rid of me and starting a brand new life. She wound a forkful of spaghetti around her fork and fumed, "Is it Danica? Has she already regretted leaving us after only a few hours? Listen here, you're not allowed to bring her back!"Dad's lips quivered. "The cops said… Danica's dead."The dining room fell pin-drop silent. Grandma's spoon slipped from her hand and fell into her bowl, splashing grease across the surface. Mom froze for a few seconds before bursting out laughing. "Do you actually believe her? She was talking back to me just yesterday. How could she possibly be dead today? She must've paid someone to put on an act to force us to take her b
