Chapter 4

Author: Shea
Late that night, the whole family finally settled down. I sat on the floor in my bedroom, carefully spreading out the pages of the loose-leaf binder.

A few words were still legible, while others had completely vanished. I pulled out a fresh sheet of paper and rewrote the names of Mom's current medications and the times she needed to take them.

Once I was done, I taped it to the most conspicuous spot on the medicine cabinet. I had no idea why I was still doing any of this. Perhaps I'd spent such a long time taking care of Mom that it had become a habit etched into my bones.

At 1:00 am, I heard footsteps outside my bedroom.

Mom pushed the door open and walked in. She tossed the household separation agreement in front of me. "Sign it."

I looked up at her. "Didn't you take my ID?"

"I'll give it back to you tomorrow after you sign the agreement."

"Can I go to the hospital?"

"Are you addicted to playing the victim now?" she jeered.

"I'm not putting on an act. I genuinely want to die right now."

The room went dead silent for a few seconds.

Mom wasn't frightened, nor did she call Dad. She simply stared at me before chuckling. "Here we go again. Every time I ask you to move out, you threaten me with suicide. I told you, I'm not falling for your tricks again!"

I balled my hands into fists. "I'm not threatening you. Every day, I wonder if you'd be happier if I didn't exist."

Mom leaned down and got right in my face. "In that case, why don't you actually do something useful for once?"

My breath instantly hitched.

"Don't just move out. I want you gone for good. Dead or alive, I don't ever want to hear your name again. Since you claim you want what's best for me, prove it!"

Dad had appeared at the threshold at some point. He had obviously overheard our conversation.

I looked at him, calling for help one last time. "I can't control myself, Dad. Can you take me to the hospital right now? I'm afraid I'm really going to die!"

He took a step forward. Mom immediately clutched her chest and began gasping for air. "Douglas Langston, she's doing it again; she just has to bring this up in the middle of the night. Does she want me to have another episode?"

Dad stopped dead in his tracks. Grandpa and Grandma were also jolted awake and hurried over.

Grandma hugged Mom and yelled at me, "Can't you just give it a rest for one night? Why are you dead set on making her life miserable?"

I looked at Dad. "I'm not trying to provoke her. I'm begging you to save me!"

Dad massaged his temples, exhausted. "Look at what you've done to your mom, Danica. Don't spew such nonsense again."

The last thing I had left inside me snapped. I lowered my head and signed my name on the household separation agreement.

Then, I added a line in the remarks section. "I voluntarily agree to leave forever and will never bother Evelyn Sanders again."

Mom snatched the agreement from me and repeatedly checked my signature. At long last, she beamed. "If you'd just been this sensible from day one, none of this would've happened."

Grandma breathed a sigh of relief as well. "That's enough, Evelyn. Don't waste your breath on her. From tomorrow on, let's just focus on living a good life together as a family."

A family. As it turned out, I had never been included in that phrase for 18 years.

The three of them surrounded Mom and led her out.

Dad walked at the very end. He turned around and glanced at me, as if he had something to tell me.

Yet, Mom called out to him from the hallway. He immediately closed my bedroom door.

I didn't get a wink of sleep that night.

Before daybreak, I placed the 18 birthday cards back into the tin box.

I wiped every single card clean, removing the dirt from where Mom had trampled them. Then, I retrieved my ID card from Dad's study and left the house.

No one realized I was gone.

I went to the children's amusement park that had been out of business for years.

When I was five, Dad had promised to take me on the carousel. However, right before leaving the house, Mom suddenly had an episode.

Wailing, she accused me of stealing her husband from her. In the end, she tore our tickets to pieces.

The faded carousel was still in the same spot. I mounted a white horse and placed the 18 birthday cards beside me.

I dialed Dad's number, but no one answered.

Mom had just sent a picture of the whole family gathered around the breakfast table in the family group chat. Dad, Grandpa, and Grandma were gathered around her in the picture.

Her caption read. "The root cause of my illness is gone. Today marks the first day of my new life!"

Every single person in the chat congratulated her.

I waited ten minutes.

Dad didn't call back.

I sent him one last message. "I'll listen to Mom, Dad. I'll never show up in your lives again."

The message was marked as read.

Yet, he only replied with three words. "Cut it out."

I powered off my phone.

Before my consciousness slipped away, I didn't think of Mom. I only thought of the five-year-old girl who had never gotten to ride the carousel.

Cupping the shredded ticket in her little hands, she quietly reassured herself. "It's okay. Once Mom gets better, Dad will definitely take me to the amusement park again!"

Yet, she waited all the way until she turned 18, and that moment never came.

When I opened my eyes again, I was standing beside the carousel. My body remained still on the back of the white horse, clutching the last birthday card in my hand. It hit me that I was truly dead.

After the park attendant called the cops, Dad was the first person the officers contacted.

When his phone rang, they were all at a restaurant, celebrating Mom's new life.

Mom smiled as she told them that when she woke up that morning, even the air felt fresher than it had before.

Dad picked up the phone. There was a brief silence on the other end before a solemn voice asked, "Am I speaking with Danica Langston's father? Your daughter has been found at the children's amusement park on the west side of the city."

Dad tightened his grip on his phone. "What's happened to her?"

I stood beside him, watching the smile slowly disappear from his face.

The voice on the other end said, "I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but she's passed away."

Mom fell silent for a long while. She didn't scream like she used to, nor did she threaten to kill herself to manipulate me emotionally. She simply sat on the floor and looked up at me. "That's fine. You have every right not to forgive me." She wiped away her tears, her voice barely above a whisper. "In that case, can you stay a little longer? I've never really taken the time to look at you." I didn't answer. The sky outside the window slowly began to brighten. Sunlight filtered through the glass and fell upon my body. I lowered my head and took a good look at Mom for the first time. She seemed to have aged a lot overnight. For the last 18 years, she had always been the princess in this family who needed to be protected. Grandpa and Grandma had indulged her. Dad had always accommodated her. I, on the other hand, had borne everything she refused to face. Now that I was dead, she could no longer shift the blame onto anyone else. …After Mom was discharged from the hospit

Mom was admitted to the psychiatric department. Dr. Campbell went through her medical records from the past 18 years and reorganized them. On the day of the family interview, Dad, Grandpa, and Grandma all came. I sat beside Mom and heard Dr. Campbell ask, "Ms. Sanders, on the tenth day after you gave birth, the hospital recommended that you be transferred to a specialist for treatment. Why did you refuse?" Mom looked at Grandma in confusion. She had been frail back then and couldn't remember much of what had happened. Grandma's eyes darted around. "Evelyn isn't a lunatic. Why would she need to see a psychiatrist? She just had a baby and was in a bad mood. She just needed to go home and rest." Dr. Campbell flipped to the next page. "When your daughter was three, Ms. Sanders threatened to hurt herself with a sharp object for the very first time. The doctor once again recommended that she be hospitalized, but her family refused." Dad explained quietly, "My company had just gone

It didn't take long for my high school to reach out to Dad. My homeroom teacher, Ms. Clark, arrived at the rental apartment with a cardboard box. Realizing how many people were there, her expression turned frighteningly cold. "I've brought Danica's belongings."The box contained a handful of textbooks, a school uniform, three competition awards, and an early college acceptance letter. Dad picked up the offer letter. His hands trembled so violently he could barely hold it.Riverdale Teachers College was the college I had wanted to attend since middle school. I had listed it as my first choice on the college preference form Mom had torn up.Ms. Clark said, "Danica's an excellent student. The school was willing to sign an early development agreement with her. She was supposed to come in today to confirm it." Mom stared at my name on the letter, her lips quivering. "She never told me."Ms. Clark jeered. "How would she dare to tell you? Last year, she won first place in the essa

My body was taken for an autopsy. Mom refused to let the staff cover me with the white cloth. She insisted that I was just asleep. After the doctor made it clear that there was no way I could recover, she collapsed in the corridor, as if all the strength had been drained from her. The cops wanted to know what had happened before I left home. Dad remained silent for a long time before handing them the household separation agreement. Grandma immediately stopped him. "This is a family matter. There's no need to tell them everything." The female officer in charge of the interrogation frowned. "The deceased clearly expressed suicidal thoughts before leaving home, yet you didn't take any action. This is no longer just a family matter!" Mom jerked her head up as if she'd been stabbed. "She never explicitly said that. She just wanted to manipulate us emotionally!"The female officer flipped open her notebook. "What exactly did the deceased say at the time?" Silence fell over the

It had never crossed my mind that even after learning of my death, her first words would still be to blame me. Mom threw herself beside the stretcher before grabbing my shoulders and shaking me violently. "How dare you die? I told you to move out. I never told you to use your death to frame me! It's supposed to be the first day of my new life today, and you just had to die today. You did this on purpose, didn't you?"The police officer could no longer stand it and pulled her away. "Please show some respect for the deceased." Mom thrashed wildly and screamed, "She's my daughter. I can treat her however I want!" This time, no one indulged her. The looks from the strangers around her finally made her realize what she'd just said. All of a sudden, she fell silent. For the first time in 18 years, she'd admitted in public that I was her daughter. Yet, I could no longer hear how sincere she was.The park attendant handed the tin box he'd found to the police officer. "These cards wer

  • Mom's Only Wish: Erase Me   Chapter 5

As soon as their words fell, Dad froze as if someone had pressed the pause button on him. He held his phone to his ear and froze in place for what felt like an eternity. Mom was still at the dining table with a plate of spaghetti Grandma had specially made for her, sitting in front of her. They were supposed to celebrate her getting rid of me and starting a brand new life. She wound a forkful of spaghetti around her fork and fumed, "Is it Danica? Has she already regretted leaving us after only a few hours? Listen here, you're not allowed to bring her back!"Dad's lips quivered. "The cops said… Danica's dead."The dining room fell pin-drop silent. Grandma's spoon slipped from her hand and fell into her bowl, splashing grease across the surface. Mom froze for a few seconds before bursting out laughing. "Do you actually believe her? She was talking back to me just yesterday. How could she possibly be dead today? She must've paid someone to put on an act to force us to take her b
