MasukThe night was exhausting again. But I didn't let it stop me from learning healing by the day.
I got a call on my new phone, a semi-functional hand-me-down of Leah's. "Hello?" I answered. "What are you doing right now?" It was Logan. He sounded relaxed, munching on grapes or something. "I'm working on a few—" He didn't let me complete before cutting me off, "There's a delivery of roses by the borders. Since human contact is minimized, get them from the south borders." I raised an eyebrow at his request. "You sound free enough for that. Do it yourself." I said. "Stop being a rebel and get me that. I have a surprise for you too." My eyebrows were crushed. I sighed at the end of the call and decided to do it anyway. I collected the roses. It made me sneeze. The pollen doesn't suit me, Logan was well aware of that. Just then, I got a call from Dr Rayleigh. "Hello, doctor. Any progress on his condition?" I asked. "Jean is still undergoing testing. There is a possibility of multiple organ failure, Ms Elaine. You should come to visit before it gets too late." He suggested. "Doctor, given my condition, I can't travel. I love my son dearly, but this is beyond me. Please take care of him. I trust you." I said. "I understand. The werewolf world seems to be in shambles." I hummed, and he cut the call after saying, "Take care". While returning to the packhouse with the roses, I came across Leah. She was discussing her pregnancy with someone on the call. "Wait. Someone's here." She abruptly cut the call to turn to me. "Look at your face. It's so stupid swollen." She commented. "These are for me, right?" Leah continued, and I nodded. Suddenly, she plucked the thorny bush for a bouquet and smashed it to the ground. And then, out of nowhere, she started crying loudly. "MUMMA! LOGAN! LOOK WHAT SHE DID!' she cried. I raised an eyebrow at her actions. "What the hell!?" Logan screamed and entered the scene. Olga wasn't far behind. She had a vicious look in her eye. "How dare you do this..." Logan came forth to hold me by the collar. I was used to the abuse anyway. However, the situation was leveraged by Leah. She stepped forward and slapped me across the face. While the others watched in silence. "You're such a selfish bitch!" She screamed and stormed away. Olga ran behind her, cooing and calling Leah an 'angel'. I laughed in my head at the irony. "You know you shouldn't have done that, right? I know you're jealous of Leah, but still." Logan said his grip on my collar loosening. "You must be sick in your head to think I'd stoop so low." I retorted. "So you didn't stomp on these...?" Logan asked innocently. I rolled my eyes. "Obviously. I didn't. Her shoes have the thorns, not mine. She did it herself." I said. Logan didn't respond and left the scene. In the evening, I was preparing another inflow of warrior ranks and more who have been fighting at the border. Healing was distributed between the seven of us. I was the seventh addition. Before I could address the patient on the bed, Logan pulled me aside. "Logan, I have work," I said, sounding desperate to leave. "Listen to me. You and I will go to a nice restaurant soon. I need to talk to you. But remember this. I will always love you." Saying, Logan kissed my forehead and walled away. Normally, I would have been swayed. But I was done with his toxicity. I brushed it off and got to work. After the healing was done, it was dawn again. Everyone else was sound asleep in the healers' hut. While I walked around with bedpans and other necessities, trying to keep the wards sanitized. I wanted to cry at the kind of work I was doing. Sure, it was for my own pack. But I was helping the same people who never supported me through harsh times. Instead, they turned a blind eye and deaf ear, just because their 'alpha and Mother Olga' told them so. I silently shed tears in agony. Just then, I got a call from Dr Rayleigh. My heart sank. I dwelled in the corner, holding the phone at an angle that the network worked. I was losing my mind when I saw it was a video call. Was this a call for Jean's parting...? "Hello, Ms Elaine." It was Dr Rayleigh's soothing voice. "W-What's wrong with my son?" I held my face and cried. "He is fine, Ms Elaine. We had just pumped up all the fluids out of his lungs. He is out of danger." Dr Rayleigh said. I let out the heaviest sigh of my life. "Also, he wants to talk to you." I gasped the loudest I could. I looked around and nodded. "Hello...mumma..." His voice... Jean hadn't spoken to me for 3 weeks. His condition worsened way too quickly. I thought I'd never be able to say goodbye or love properly one last time. I, as the Luna of Waterstone, never had time for him as he was growing up. But my negligence cost him his life. "I love you, Jean...mumma loves you so much," I said. No other words were crossing my mind. "I love you too, mumma. I will be fine." I clutched my chest and cried silently as he said. Jean is such a mature child. Way too mature for his age. He makes me a proud mother... We couldn't talk much since baby Jean fell asleep quickly. Dr Rayleigh said the procedure was only possible since werewolf children had more immunity and resilience than normal human children. I was more than thankful for Dr Rayleigh. However, a presence was looming over me. I didn't realize it was Leah as her wide eyes stared at the contact on display. "Why are you talking to my ex-boyfriend?"AUTHOR'S POVThe tension was thick. The question from Rayleigh was unanswered. Silence was never louder than this for Elaine."Answer!" She shouted. The kidnapper flinched, shook his head."You know you are answering us with your silence, right?" Rayleigh used the tactical route to gain the upper hand in the situation. The kidnapper shook his head again, swiftly bringing the duffel with Jean inside closer to the gun.Elaine knew her actions would only prompt this man to press the trigger. No one wanted that to happen. With stakes so high, anger clouding all her functioning, Elaine had to depend on Rayleigh. Only for a brief moment. But her eyes, sharper than a human at that moment, caught the little detail on the kidnapper's collar. It was too small and flashed too soon to even notice. She could catch it, because the kidnapper's hand was shaking like a leaf in the first place. The fabric tended to move.A tiny, red blinking micro cam on his collar. He was, in fact, being monitored. AUTHOR'S POVThe hospital alarms were blaring like no tomorrow. Everyone followed queue, and they filled the hallways with curiosity, fear and panic. Whispers over whispers, rumours over rumours. It was kind of distracting.Rayleigh's head was weighing heavily with thoughts. He tried to branch it all, came to a ground to find a loophole."That's not a breach alarm, is it?" He asked Taylor. The healer listened to the beat carefully. There were three kinds of alarms for each code.Code yellow for a missing patient.Code pink for an infant/child abduction.Code grey for system failure. In this case...door opening. All three had similar beats. Three clicks and one siren. But the duration between clicks and the gap between the siren blaring was what set them apart.Rayleigh's whole body felt like freezing in place. Was it Code yellow, pink or grey? And...why not all three?"Shit,"It was too late.In the crowd, while nurse John followed Taylor and the others outside, Jean was left unsuperv
AUTHOR'S POVElaine and Rayleigh return to the hospital in one piece each. They were, very obviously, still too caught up with what they just discovered. Plans ran through their heads, but none seemed powerful enough to take down Jacob Fenris and his medical crimes. They walked back into the hospital from the back parking lot. Not much security. No one to question them. Most of them were asleep, anyway."I'm going to check up on Jean and go to my ward. You have a shift?" Asked Elaine. Rayleigh nodded."I do, and it's hectic. But I could use some time off to see his little face." Rayleigh smiled with a sigh. Elaine knew exactly why he asked for that. He needed to get his mind off of it. Get his heart restarted with some cuteness."Come with me," she smiled, and they walked hand in hand down to the corridor, third floor, into the paediatric ward. However, the moment Elaine set foot into the room, Jean's monitor started blaring like crazy. Staff were alerted, but nurses who responded fir
Rayleigh's POVJackets on. Suits tight. Courage shining. Most importantly, it was our will to find the truth and get so many lives back on track. I mean in every sphere. We were about to stop a terrible crime. I never liked Jacob Fenris. Even if his donations became a part of my salary slip. I'd hate anyone who committed a medical crime. Any crime, in fact. The small locket under all my clothes, hanging on my chest gave me a soft buzz. I ignored it for a little while."There he goes," Elaine spotted Jacob exiting the hospital via the back door. My instincts said he'd take that exit and I was right. He got into a car, drove it himself and hit the streets."He's definitely going somewhere shady. Why won't he have a chauffeur?" Elaine asked. I couldn't agree more. We followed into the night of abyss. Street lights fled by. He was driving too fast. The lanes were empty too, and I kept the pace unsteady, deliberately, to seem as though we weren't following.Street lights started disappeari
The horror in their faces was inexplicable. Even if I hated her for everything she's done to me, what HE did to me, the healer in me knew better. They didn't deserve this. But I was soon going to lose that empathy."I'll be in my cabin if you need me. And Dr Rhodey will be checking on you with time." Saying, Rayleigh gave us a time-out.The moment I stepped away from the room, a heavy breath poured out of me."That was hectic," I said, walking behind Rayleigh. We reached his cabin where he pulled up previous tests of Leah. The one I helped organise at his home.He stared at it. Long and hard."What's it, Rayleigh? You see something?" I approached. He was comparing two pictures. Two x-rays of her lungs.Same exact condition— safe.Shouldn't HIV eat away at lung tissue at that stage?"Yup. It's not HIV. She doesn't have AIDS." He says to himself."Elaine," he turns to me, "I know I'm asking a lot, but Leah's not my only patient tonight. I need you to observe her, all night. Her symptoms
It was calling for me, praying to be used. But I didn't think I'd have to use it so soon.Next morning, I was heading to my son's ward. Wanted to start the day with a beautiful blessing. And yes, seeing my son's face first thing in the morning makes me believe all the luck in the world was for me. So I headed out.Something in the air feels awkward. Chilling. November was cold around here, but not as cold, considering it was closer to the sea. What was this scent in the air? Made me feel so uneasy.Must be all the species that come here, weeping, in pain, running low on hope. It's a hospital, after all. I forced the feeling out of my heart. Until...I caught a glimpse of two people I never expected to even see.My breath hitched. My stance faltered.Walking through the huge, blue rimmed glass doors of the hospital, self-reporting OPD, two people who made my life hell walked in, hand in hand.
