Chapter 5: The Lesson

POV: Cian Smith

The door bolt slid back at dawn, and I found him exactly where the guards had left him — wrists re-secured, tighter this time, fresh gauze already spotting through at his side where Elias had redone the stitches he'd torn open running. He hadn't slept. I could see it in the set of his jaw, the raw edges of exhaustion he refused to let touch anything else about his face.

Chapter 6: Sister's ShadowPOV: Devlin KaneMy knees still ached from the hardwood, a deep, stubborn throb that hadn't faded even hours later, lying on my side on a bed I refused to think of as anything but another surface in another cage. My wrists were raw under the restraints. My pride was worse.I hadn't slept. Every time I closed my eyes I felt his hand at the back of my neck again, the exact pressure of it, the exact moment my knees had given out beneath me despite everything left in me screaming to stay upright, and the memory made my jaw clench harder than any of the physical damage had.I told myself it was rage keeping me awake. It was easier than examining what else it might have been. The door opened without the courtesy of a knock. Cian came in alone this time, no violence in his posture, which somehow put me more on edge than if he'd walked in swinging. Men like him didn't come empty-handed. They came with something worse than fists."Victor Lang hit one of your family's

He hadn't slept. I could see it in the set of his jaw, the raw edges of exhaustion he refused to let touch anything else about his face.He looked up when the door opened, and the venom in that look hadn't dimmed at all overnight. If anything, it had sharpened, distilled down by twelve hours of confinement into something purer than the fury I'd pinned to the floor the night before. The room still smelled faintly of antiseptic and old blood, undercut by the sharper, cleaner scent of the rain that had followed him in from the hallway window someone had forgotten to seal. Somewhere below us, the estate was already awake, staff moving through their morning routines as if nothing above their heads was any different from

  • Monsters on Ice   First Crack

Chapter 4: First CrackPOV: Devlin KaneElias's hands were careful with the bandage, more careful than they needed to be for a man who'd called me a waste of his time under his breath twice already. I let him think the wince was worse than it was, let my breathing go shallow and unsteady on the exhale, and watched everything else in the room instead of watching him.The door stood half open behind the guard posted outside it. A rolling tray sat within reach of the exam chair, steel instruments laid out in a neat row nobody had bothered to lock away, because why would they — I was restrained at one wrist, patched together, three days into a captivity that had already convinced everyone in this house I was too broken to be dangerous. That was the mistake. It was the only one they'd made, and I intended to make it count.Three days of watching this room had taught me its rhythms the way I used to learn a rival's schedule before a hit — Elias came alone for the morning check, the guard st

  • Monsters on Ice   The Cage

Chapter 3: The CagePOV: Cian SmithThe monitor in the security office showed him in grainy grey — pacing the length of the suite in three strides, turning, pacing back, favoring the shoulder Elias had spent forty minutes stitching. He hadn't sat down once since they'd brought him up from the car. Most men, patched together and dumped in a locked room, exhausted themselves within the hour and folded onto the nearest surface. Devlin Kane had been awake for three and hadn't stopped moving.I studied the feed longer than I needed to. The clinical part of it was easy — the stiffness in his left side where two ribs had taken a beating, the shallow way he favored his right leg, the fresh white gauze at his shoulder already going faintly pink at the edges. What held my attention wasn't the damage. It was the refusal underneath it, the way he kept testing the door, the window, the seams of the room, methodical and furious, a man cataloguing every angle of a cage he already understood he could

  • Monsters on Ice   The Decision

The Devil i Keep Chapter 2: The DecisionPOV: Devlin KaneThe dock floor came up to meet me cold and slick, diesel and rain soaking through my shirt before I'd even finished falling. I pushed my chest up off the concrete, tasted copper and oil in the same breath, and made myself look up instead of staying down. Cian's boots were the first thing I saw. Then the gun. Then his face, which hadn't changed at all since the moment I'd first seen it tonight — no satisfaction, no anger, nothing. Like putting a man on the ground was a task he'd already forgotten the moment it was done.I wasn't giving him the rest of it. Whatever came next, he wasn't getting to watch me stay down.Marek's boots hit the grating beside him, fast, and his voice came sharp over the rain. "He put four of our men in the ground tonight, Cian. Put a bullet in his head and let's go.""Step back, Marek.""It's a mistake keeping a Kane alive—""Say another word," Cian said, still not looking at him, still looking at me,

  • Monsters on Ice   The Failed Hit

The Devil i KeepChapter 1: The Failed HitPOV: Cian SmithGunfire cracked off the containers in short, ugly bursts, and under it, the rain kept coming, cold and steady, turning the dock into a sheet of black glass. Cordite hung heavy in the wet air, sharp and burnt, mixing with the copper stink of blood already pooling near the crates. My men moved through the chaos like they'd rehearsed it because they had. Devlin's hadn't. Two of his were down before they'd found real cover, another folding sideways into a stack of pallets, a fourth crawling toward the water like the water was going to save him.I walked through the middle of it without hurrying. There was nothing left out here that needed my hurry."Cian!" Marek's voice, off to my left, sharp over the rain. "He's breaking east toward the loading crane!""Then don't let him."I already knew where Devlin was going. There was nowhere else to go.I found him near the crane housing, soaked through, gun hand empty because he'd already p
