Chapter 68

The question hits like a slap, sudden and painful, leaving me stunned momentarily. What did I do? The words echo in my mind, heavy with disbelief. My hands curl into fists at my sides, nails digging into my palms as my pulse quickens.

“What did I do?” I repeat, my voice strained. “Are you serious right now? I didn’t do anything, Elijah! She started throwing stuff at me out of nowhere. I didn’t provoke her. I didn’t say anything to upset her. I’m as confused as you are.”

Elijah shakes his head, his expression shadowed with disbelief. “It… doesn’t add up. Sally was the most peaceful person I’ve ever known. She wouldn’t hurt a fly. For her to go off like that? Absolutely not.” His words land like falling bricks, one after another.

My anger surges. “So what? You think I deserved it?” I bite out, each word slicing through the tense air. “You think I did something to set her off? That I’m why your little sister threw a tantrum? I’m telling you the truth, Elijah. Maybe instead of grilling me

“I look like a damn potato,” Nate whines, tearing off the beige, button-up shirt and tossing it onto his bed. My gaze narrows onto the now-crumpled shirt—one of many other shirts lying beside me. I sigh.“I still think the teal one looks great on you,” I insist, pulling it out from the pile and holding it up. “It brings out the color in your eyes.”Nate stares into his closet. “Yeah? You think?”I nod. “Not think. I know.”He lets out a low breath of defeat, holding out a hand, wriggling his fingers. “All right. Let me have it.”I pass him the shirt. “So. What’s the big plan tonight?”As Nate pulls the shirt over his head, he says, “Well, Luca said he’s taking care of it. So, I don’t know exactly.”“But it involves taking over Valerie’s party?”“Yes,” he offers a toothy grin, as his head pops out through the neckline of his shirt, his light brown hair sticking up in all directions.“You have so much faith in him.”“And you don’t?” he asks, looking taken aback. “Hails, the guy is the m

The guy barely nods, but Luca doesn’t seem to care. He turns back to me, his eyes glinting with mischief. “So, what’s the plan? We hunt this ghost down, shake them up a bit, and make them spill their spectral secrets?”I smirk despite myself. “Yeah, something like that. Let’s see if we can find out anything useful about that key. Maybe there’s a ghost bored enough to chat.”“Or rant,” Luca adds with a wink. “Old ghosts love a good rant. Especially the ones who think they’re still living in the 1800s.”“And you’d know how?”“Ah—” he cracks a grin. “Good old Humphrey ranted about it one day.”“Oh, I see.”We grab our coffees, and Luca leads the way out, holding the door open with an exaggerated flourish. I roll my eyes at him but can’t help the smile tugging at my lips.As we make our way to the Werewolf History display room, the vibe changes. The corridor is dimly lit, and the old portraits hanging on the walls seem to watch us with accusing eyes. It’s colder here, too, the kind of chi

As I leave the library behind, I can’t shake the tension lingering in my chest.Luca’s walking just ahead of me, hands shoved casually in his pockets, a half-smile playing on his lips like he’s enjoying the whole situation. He probably is. Nothing seems to faze him, and honestly, that’s what drew me to him in the first place—his recklessness, the way he just doesn’t care. It’s a welcome distraction from the constant pressure of the Academy, of being caught between whatever is happening with Elijah and all the other crap going on.Suddenly, Luca stops, spinning around to face me with that sly grin. “Hey, I’m curious. What’s alpha’s boy’s specialty, again?”I blink, caught off guard. “What do you mean?”He cocks his head slightly, like he’s already one step ahead in some conversation I don’t know we’re having. “You know, his ability. Or abilities? What is it that makes him so special?”A flicker of confusion runs through me, but I answer without thinking. “Well… he can do general magic.

Elijah, for his part, looks like he’s trying to focus, but there’s no denying that he’s aware of her too-close proximity. The furrow in his brow grows deeper each time she leans in, and though he doesn’t outright pull away, he’s definitely uncomfortable. Or at least, I hope he is. Unless that frown is designated for Luca, in particular. It’s hard to tell at this point.Meanwhile, the guy in question is still at the front desk, a smug grin plastered on his face. Every now and then, he’ll toss a comment my way, trying to lighten the mood. And though I don’t mind the distraction, I can feel Elijah’s eyes boring into the back of my head.“Hey,” Luca says quietly as I pass by with a stack of books to shelve. “How long do you think it’ll take before Princess Perfect makes her move?”I raise an eyebrow, glancing over at Valerie, who’s now practically draping herself over Elijah’s chair. “Oh, she’s already halfway there,” I mutter.Luca chuckles, his eyes glinting mischievously. “Wanna place

“So, you’re here to babysit me?” I ask, raising an eyebrow. “Not because you wanted to spend time with me, but because you don’t trust Luca? And then while you’re at it, hanging out with a girl you know I hate, already more than you need to.”“Hails…” he says, his voice softer now. “I don’t want to cause more problems. But I can’t ignore the fact that there’s something… wrong.”I narrow my eyes, trying to make sense of it. “So, you figured studying etiquette with Valerie, of all people, was the best way to make me feel secure while you keep an eye on Luca? Real smooth, Elijah.”He winces slightly. “When you put it like that, it sounds bad. I know.”“Because it is bad,” I say, my irritation growing. I don’t want to fight with him, but I can’t shake the feeling of being second in this equation. Of something being way off—and I’m currently throwing wild guesses in the wind to what it may be.And the worst part? I feel like I keep missing my throws. I pinch the bridge of my nose, trying t

For once, I’m looking forward to my evening shift at the library. I can’t help but feel a spark of anticipation, wondering what kind of trouble Luca will stir up tonight. His unpredictability is almost as entertaining as the inevitable chaos that follows. But the real highlight? Watching him try to dodge Tilly’s ghostly pranks—her wrath is like a storm waiting to break, and I wouldn’t miss it for the world. When I step into the library, the familiar scent of old books and polished wood greets me. It’s strangely comforting, but that comfort lasts only a second. My heart sinks when I notice him—Elijah, already seated at one of the larger tables. I pause, acknowledging that it’s not a normal response for seeing my boyfriend. Things are fine again—right? Then why am I feeling like this all of the sudden?A frown scrunches up my face.He looks calm, almost too calm, flipping through a thick book. My excitement for the evening flickers out like a candle in the wind. But it’s Luca at the fro
