Elijah.

I scowl across the table, my gaze fixed on my father, the almighty alpha, as he chats with the ice-queen herself—Valerie. They’re discussing plans for the Elder’s Summit, their voices a mix of conceited authority and false pleasantries. Valerie’s leaning in too close, her laugh grating on my nerves as she nods at whatever ridiculous idea my father is spouting now. Something about custom outfits. Of course, there’s a designated designer—because the Summit isn’t complete without overpriced clothes to make them look important. I dig my nails into my palm under the table, forcing myself to focus on anything but their smug faces.

My attention drifts, pulled across the courtyard despite myself. I see her. Hailey. She’s sitting with her parents, and everything about her screams discomfort. Her shoulders are stiff, her smile forced, and the way she fidgets with the edge of the tablecloth makes my stomach twist. I tell myself to look away. Forget her. This is better. Safer for her.

The moment I put weight on my leg, agony lances through me, sharp and punishing. A broken sound escapes me, more whimper than growl. And then, the shift starts.A different kind of pain rips through me, as unstoppable as a tide. My bones snap, shifting, reshaping with brutal force. Fur retracts, skin stretches, muscles twist and reform. My body is no longer my own, caught in a storm of transformation I can’t stop. I hit the ground hard, trembling, slick with sweat and dirt. The coppery scent of my own blood clogs my throat, thick and suffocating.Luca shifts back, cursing under his breath. Chaos rages around us—wolves running, howling, fighting. The scent of smoke thickens the air, distant yet creeping closer. Everything is moving too fast, spiraling out of control.Luca looks around, his jaw clenched, frustration flashing across his face. “We need help.”No one stops. No one even looks. His expression darkens. “For crap sake. I have to carry you.”A bitter, breathless laugh forces it

Luca releases a low growl, and in my mind I can hear one, simple word echo in an exasperated, “No.”“Can you hear me?” I ask inside my head, testing.“Louder than a bomb going off,” he retorts in my head.Celeste starts shifting beside us. Within mere seconds, a stunning dark-brown wolf appears beside us. “What the flying freak is going on?” “The humans are attacking again,” Luca’s forest-green eyes steadies on me. “They’re out for the kill this time.” “They can’t do that!” Celeste counters. “That has to be illegal!”I don’t know. My mind is still catching up to my body, to what I’ve become.A sharp crack echoes through the trees—gunfire. Shouting. The humans are closing in. I smell them before I see them, sweat and steel, adrenaline and the pure need for revenge. They’re hunting us.Luca growls beside me, ears flicking toward the sounds. Celeste stiffens, her dark brown fur blending into the shadows of the trees. We need to move. Now.Then I see him.A burly man barrels through the

The reflection staring back at me isn’t my own.A massive, brown wolf, fur thick and wild, eyes glowing a searing, unnatural blue—just like they did when Luca marked me. My breath is a hurricane inside my chest, each inhale rattling against my ribs like a caged beast, but the sound of it is drowned out by the chaos erupting outside. The gym lights flicker, casting shadows that stretch and distort over the walls. Distant explosions thunder through the academy, the walls trembling with each impact. Screams—both human and werewolf—pierce the air, tangled with the primal howls of those who have already shifted, those who are fighting, those who are fleeing. But none of it feels real. None of it makes sense.I rip my gaze away from the mirror, stumbling back. Except I don’t stumble—I move with a frightening grace, my limbs responding in ways they never have before. My ears twitch at the slightest sounds—footsteps pounding, weapons clashing, frantic orders being shouted. Beyond the academy

I’d be lying if I say he isn’t. However, “I’m not into him.” That much is the truth.“Hurry up. We’re late for physical,” Nate sings, winking. “Adrian said he wants to talk to me when we get there.”“And you still deemed me worthy enough to come see me and risk being late for your boyfriend?” I grin. “I’m flattered.”“Oh, you should be!” he huffs.I throw on my clothes in record time while Nate waits impatiently, tapping his foot like a disapproving mother. We head straight to our first class of the day, and I immediately regret skipping breakfast. Physical training on an empty stomach is a death sentence—it’ll take every ounce of energy I have just to keep up. But since I was already running late, sacrificing a decent meal was unavoidable. The gym smells like sweat, old leather, and a faint hint of something metallic—probably from the last poor soul who lost a fight in here. It’s massive, with padded walls that have seen better days and an entire section of gym equipment designed spe

The sharp shake of my shoulder jolts me from sleep. I barely get a second to register the blurry figure looming over me before Ariah’s voice slices through the fog in my brain.“You slept through your alarm. Again.” Her tone is both exasperated and amused, like she’s not sure whether to scold me or laugh at my inability to function before noon.I groan, turning my face into the pillow. “I’m getting up.”Ariah makes a doubtful noise, but I hear her step away, the rustling of fabric as she finishes getting ready. A moment later, the door clicks shut behind her.Perfect.I immediately roll over onto my side and let my eyes drift closed. Sleep pulls at me like an anchor, heavy and irresistible. The second I begin slipping under, a sudden burst of movement jolts me again—this time, not from Ariah.A thud, followed by a sharp clatter.I peek an eye open just in time to see one of Ariah’s books tumbling off her desk, landing in a heap of its own pages. A second later, a hairbrush follows, sm

Elijah nods, slipping past me and heads for the space I pointed at. He crunches down, reaching out and sliding his fingers over the words. He lets out a sigh. “You don’t have to help me, you know.”I ignore him, asking, “You reckon she’s referring to the key?”He shakes his head. “I can’t imagine what else she’s talking about.”I remain silent for a moment, before, “Like the letter, this could be—”“For me or Luca.”“She loves being cryptic. Was she like this when she was alive?”Elijah raises his head, and cracks a smile. One that sparks light to his eyes that I haven’t seen in quite a bit. “She loved puzzles. And confusing people.”I snort. “Figures.”The smile drops, and another deep frown takes over as he stares around the mess in the room. “Did she try to hurt you again?”“No. But Ariah is pretty ticked off,” I shrug. “Sally tried to attack her.”“I wish I can figure out why she’s doing it,” he mutters.“So, you’re not going to accuse Ariah of provoking her, too?” I hate the stin
