CHAPTER FIFTY

Red Hollow stood at the edge of night, suspended between the waning light and the gathering storm. I had returned to our tower, but the hallways felt empty, as if Kael’s absence shortly after dawn had hollowed the walls themselves.

The wards glowed low in hushed blue, humming faintly like ghosts waiting for permission to act. Moonlight streaked through shattered windows, painting shards of cold silver across the floor.

I stood in the central chamber, Kael’s dagger clutched in my hand. It felt impossibly heavy: the weight of his devotion, my fractured trust, the daughter he protected, and yet betrayed.

I dared not move.

Because each step felt like a betrayal.

The echoes of horns pierced the quiet. Already, Cyria’s forces moved across Red Hollow’s borders, wolves and warlocks sworn to her cause.

The council chamber door creaked.

Selene entered, whispering, “They’re marching.”

“Then let them march,” I replied numbly. I didn’t look at her.

Selene met my eyes, her voice steady. “If he knee

Our Happiness Is Loud Enough. I never thought I’d get used to the sound of peace, but riding down the winding country road with Kael beside me, sun on our shoulders, wind in our hair, and not a single blade pointed at our throats? Yeah, I could get used to this.“Do you keep smiling like that because you’re happy,” Kael drawled from his saddle, “or because you’re plotting my untimely death?”“Both,” I said sweetly. He shot me a look that promised retaliation, but I pretended to be fascinated by a field of wildflowers to my left.“Someone’s following us,” Kael said suddenly, his tone sharp. My stomach tightened. “What?”Then I heard the flutter of wings.“Oh, no,” I groaned, realizing who it was just as a small, irritable shadow dove straight at Kael’s head.“Kael Thornbane!” Edgar screeched, landing awkwardly on the pommel of Kael’s saddle. “Do you know how hard it is to track you two lovebirds without snacks to sustain me?”Kael swore, jerking his reins as the bat settled on his shou

I’d forgotten what silence felt like. Not the eerie kind from battlefields after the screams have stopped, but real silence. The kind that comes with sunlight streaming through trees and birdsong drifting on the wind. It was strange, almost unsettling, to be riding a horse down a dirt road with Lyra beside me instead of stalking through war-torn ruins.“Do you keep looking over your shoulder because you expect someone to stab you,” Lyra teased from her saddle, “or because you’re afraid Astrid’s going to swoop in and tell us we’re needed back at the Rotunda?”“Both,” I admitted. She laughed softly, and gods, I’d travel to the end of the earth just to hear that sound. We’d left Red Hollow at dawn, slipping out before anyone could rope us into another meeting. Astrid covered for us, of course, though not without a scowl and a sarcastic, “Try not to burn down the countryside while you’re gone.”Now it was just us, no wars, no councils, no walls. Just open sky, the creak of saddles, and th

I’m convinced the gods made Lyra just to torture me. She’s standing in front of me in one of my shirts, the one that’s too big on her, the hem brushing mid-thigh, sleeves hanging off her shoulders like she’s wearing a piece of me. Her hair’s a mess, her lips still swollen from the way I kissed her this morning, and I can’t look away. She’s barefoot, humming softly as she rummages through the cupboards for food, completely unaware that she’s driving me insane.“Lyra.”She glances over her shoulder, an eyebrow arched. “What?”I cross the room in three long strides and box her in against the counter, bracing my hands on either side of her hips. Her eyes widen slightly, but her lips curve. “You’re staring again.”I lower my head until our foreheads touch. “I’m trying to decide if I should make breakfast or just keep you pinned here for the rest of the day.”“Breakfast sounds reasonable,” she teases, biting back a smile.“Good thing I’m not reasonable,” I murmur, brushing my lips across he

KAEL’S POV:The first thing I notice when I wake up is the weight of her against me. Lyra’s head rests on my chest, one hand curled near her cheek, her breath warm and steady. Her hair spills over her face in tangled waves, and the faint scar where the mark used to be peeks from beneath the edge of the blanket. For months, I lived with the terror that I’d never see her like this again.Alive. Whole. Mine. And even now, even after everything, a part of me still can’t believe I deserve it. I lie perfectly still, memorizing her. The curve of her jaw. The way her lashes cast soft shadows on her cheeks. The way her body fits perfectly against mine, like she was always meant to be here. gods, I could spend the rest of my life just watching her breathe.I reach up carefully, brushing a strand of hair from her face. She stirs slightly but doesn’t wake, her lips parting with a soft sigh. She’s beautiful, not in the way other people see her, because she’s fierce, or powerful, or the Thornbane w

The war was over, but peace didn’t come overnight. Red Hollow was still scarred, buildings half-collapsed, streets cracked and blackened from magic, but life had returned. Children’s laughter echoed down the alleys again. Merchants called out their wares. For the first time in months, I didn’t wake to the sound of war drums. I stood on the balcony of the rebuilt Rotunda, watching the city breathe again. Kael came up behind me, silent as always, his presence brushing against mine like a shadow. His arms slid around my waist, warm and steady.“You’re quiet,” he murmured against my neck.I leaned back into him, closing my eyes. “I’m trying to believe this is real.”His lips brushed my shoulder. “It is. We made it through, Lyra. Finally.”I wanted to believe that. But my hands tightened on the railing.“We almost didn’t,” I whispered.Kael turned me gently to face him, his hands warm on my hips. “I know,” he said softly. “And I hate that I failed you.”I frowned, meeting his eyes. “Failed

The world was silent after the Forgotten Court fell. Too silent. Kael and Astrid stood on either side of me, both bloodied and pale, both refusing to let me fall.“She’s inside me,” I whispered, clutching my chest. The mark, once faint now burned hotter with every breath.Astrid gripped her glaive. “We end her now, before she takes root again.”Kael cupped my face, his eyes desperate. “We’re not killing you to do it. We’ll find another way.”“There is no other way,” Astrid said, her voice low. “If we wait, she’ll win. You know it.”“I don’t care!” Kael snapped. “I won’t lose her!”I stepped back, trembling, my voice soft but steady. “We don’t have time to argue. She’s getting stronger by the second. We have to do this now.”Astrid looked at me, her pale eyes full of respect. “Then we go inside. All of us. We burn her out from the root.”We sat in a circle at the center of the battlefield, hands clasped, Astrid’s glaive forming a ring of protective light around us.“Focus on each other
