Lyra’s POV

I had known war, I had known pain. I had even known the madness of power unraveling in my bloodstream like wildfire through frost, but she had never known betrayal that felt this personal. The whispers started just after the Oracle left. Rumors, then fragments of truth, then, finally, a face.

A face she trusted.

Edgar.

Her friend. Her reluctant protector. The only person who dared speak to her like she wasn’t the girl who broke the sky.

And now, she stood in the middle of the war council’s chamber, a scroll in my hand, its seal broken, its contents damning. Kael stood beside me, unreadable. The Council flanked the walls, unsure if they were watching the beginning of a trial or an execution.

Edgar was dragged in, wrists shackled with iron laced in vulmirite, a mineral meant to suppress divine blood. He didn’t fight it. He didn’t even flinch.

“Tell me this is a mistake,” I said, voice hoarse.

Edgar’s eyes, looked at me with something I couldn’t name, not guilt, not fear, but

Lyra’s POVThe ride to Tel Varenth was nothing like the last. No triumphant march. No victory-laced road paved by the blood of fallen gods. Just cold winds, burnt soil, and a silence so thick it felt like even the air was holding its breath.Kael rode beside me. Quiet, brooding, his hand never far from the hilt of his blade. The last forty-eight hours had aged him. Or maybe it had just revealed the years he’d been hiding. Every line in his jaw felt sharper now. Every glance more guarded.Edgar was gone. Taken. And the only clue we had was a single, ancient map and the word Tel Varenth circled in red ink, as if that could hold back the storm that was waiting for us there.I clutched the scroll tighter beneath my cloak. The one that named me Athyra. The one that changed everything, except it hadn’t changed the only thing that mattered.Edgar had still protected me, even now. Even after I’d doubted him. After I’d accused him of betrayal, after I’d let Selene’s venomous words poison my tr

Lyra’s POVI didn’t sleep that night, not because I couldn’t but because I didn’t want to. Sleep meant surrender. Silence. A dark place where the name might find me before I was ready to face it and gods, I wasn’t ready. The scroll lay on the floor beside me like a loaded blade, still sealed, untouched, glowing faintly from within. I could feel the thing watching me.Kael had gone quiet. He always did when he didn’t know how to help but he stayed, his back to the wall, arms crossed, eyes trained on me like I might float into the sky again without warning.“You think it’s true?” I finally asked. He didn’t answer right away. But I felt his gaze shift to the scroll.“Names have power,” he said. “Yours was always more than a name.”I curled my fingers around the edge of the stone window. The moon was high. The sky was too quiet. The kind of quiet that came after something ended but before something worse began.“You’re afraid I’ll change,” I whispered.“No,” he said. “I’m afraid they’ll t

Lyra’s POVI lit the last candle for Dareth. He was the only one who ever made me laugh during the blood-soaked months in the god-wars. He died with half a heart and a full grin, whispering a joke even as the light left his eyes.“Here lies the man who kissed a goddess and lived to tell the tale—until he didn’t.”The flame wavered, then held. The temple ruins smelled of wet ash and melted stone. Every corner echoed with footsteps of those long gone. My reflection shimmered in the pool beside the altar, a flicker of myself I barely recognized. The war had changed me. No. I had changed myself.Footsteps echoed behind me, and this time, they didn’t bring comfort. They brought silence too heavy to ignore.Kael.He stood a few paces away, his jaw tight, shadows deep under his eyes. He looked like a man who’d read his own death sentence and folded it into his pocket.“Selene spoke to you,” I said without turning. He didn’t answer right away.“That obvious?” he asked, voice low.“She always

Lyra’s POVThe aftermath of god-blood soaked the earth for three days. They called it the Black Rain. No sun. No sky. Just thunder that groaned like it had seen too much. The clouds were stitched in shades of charcoal, pregnant with ash, as if the heavens themselves mourned what had happened below. Even the wind carried the scent of death, burnt feathers, scorched divinity, and the rust of iron.I stood at the edge of a broken temple wall, staring at the horizon that never seemed to end. The war was over, but peace never came. Not really. My fingers were caked in dried blood, cracked and lined like ancient ruins. Every breath felt borrowed. My heart beat like it didn’t know how to slow down. It wasn’t just my body that ached, it was the silence that followed. The silence after the screams. The kind that makes you wonder if you won or simply survived.Kael approached behind me, silent in his footsteps like always, but i felt him. The way my bones stopped aching when he was near. The wa

Kael & Lyra POVKaelOne year ago, The Oracle’s chamber reeked of blood and myrrh. Golden flames danced in bronze bowls, casting jagged shadows on the cracked walls. The woman who called herself the Seer of Twelve Realms was already waiting, blindfolded, pale lips curled like she knew how this would end.“Kael of House Varyn,” she crooned. “The cursed one seeks salvation. How ironic.”I didn’t flinch. “Tell me how to protect her.”She tilted her head. “Protect Lyra, you mean.”My jaw clenched. I hadn’t spoken her name aloud. Not once. Not here.“I’ll do anything,” I said.“Even lie?” she murmured. “Even betray her?”Silence. Then…“Yes.”The Oracle's smile grew cruel.“She will destroy everything. Even you.”“I’ll take that risk.”“You say that now…” Her tone turned sharp. “But when the gods come for her, when you become the reason she bleeds, will you still say her name with love?”I stepped forward, eyes glowing red.“I’ll say her name in war. I’ll say it in ruin. I’ll say it even i
