Thirty-Seven: Back Home

EIRA

His strange-colored eyes pierce me, like he’s looking into my soul, seeking out the secrets I try to hide.

Slowly, I shake my head. “I’m not running off.”

“But you are,” he tsks, but there’s no humour in it. “The child of prophecy must die, you know that right?”

He says it like he knows something. I swallow thickly.

“What does that have to do with me?” My words come out confident, despite the absolute terror I feel.

Before he can respond, Cassian is striding toward me, his jaw tight and eyes hard, and filled with fury.

“Are you seriously leaving with Kael? In his condition?” He roars, reaching for Kael.

I move out of his reach. “Don’t touch him, Cassian. I’m going to scream.”

Surprise flashes across his face. “You just humiliated Lysandra, now you want to humiliate me?”

A disbelieving scoff slips past my lips, eyes burning with unshed tears.

“I don’t even know why I bother.” I shake my head. I don’t know why I bother with him.

Sixty: The Morning AfterCASSIANLysandra glides out of the bed, the sheets firmly wrapped around her body. Thank the goddess for that. She ignores me, heading for the closet where she takes out her velvet blue robe and dons it. The sheets fall, pooling at her feet.“I’m asking you a question, Lysandra.” I frown.“Goddess, what do you want from me?” She shoots me a glare.“What happened last night? Why did I wake up to find you naked in bed with me?”I cannot remember the last time I had Lysandra’s naked body pressed against me. Much less of having anything intimate to do with her:“What do you think happened, Cassian? We’re adults.”I scoff. “You’re kidding. You know I wouldn’t touch you.”“What a way to make a girl feel good about herself.” She rolls her eyes.“Lysandra…”“What, Cassian? You were much nicer when you practically begged to sleep with me.”I stagger backward, my jaw dropping. “No…”“Of course you won’t remember. You were drunk off your ass.”“And you took advantage of

Fifty-nine: Dream Or Reality?TRIGGER WARNING —PROCEED WITH CAUTION‼️CASSIANI don’t know when the celebration ends or if it even ends. All I know is that Reece and Lysandra are helping me to my room.Everything is blurry, my mind swimming. And for the first time in a while it’s not about Eira, or Lysandra or the bloody mess my life is.No, my head is at peace. Swimming with nothingness…like a thick, warm blanket is cocooning my thoughts. If I’m this drunk, then I definitely had a lot to drink. Nothing really is able to wipe out a wolf, much less an Alpha. But this…this I love. With my two left feet and the hands supporting my frame, I’m deposited in the middle of my bed.“I’ll take it from here, Reece. Thank you.” Even in my drunken state, I can recognize that snobbish voice.I blink up at the lights, mesmerized by how brightly they shine and the beautiful patterns they reflect on the ceiling.“Wow.” I hold up a finger—or is it two?Three?Who cares?I’m in awe. When I look in the d

Fifty-Eight: To CeremoniesCASSIANI’m barely a foot inside the palace, when Lysandra spots me. Her lips twisted in a scowl, eyes hard…furious.“Where have you been?” She hisses, eyes darting around to make sure no one is listening. “I’ve been looking and waiting for you.”My stare is blank when I look at her. I don’t really give a damn. Not after Eira has ended things before they even began. And goddess, I don’t blame her. Not one bit.“I’m here now,” I mutter dryly. She sighs, and pulls me into a hug which takes me by utter surprise. Once I register her body on mine, I try to shrug her off but she doesn’t budge.“You smell like that omega. The runt to be specific,” she spits. “What would people say if they smell someone else on you. It’s a god awful smell.”I frown and push her off. “Stop it! Does it look like I care? You went on to do this coronation without my consent, nor my input!”“You’re still sore about that? It’s been done, Cassian. I’m Queen now.”My jaw ticks, and I march

Fifty-Seven: Final ThreadEIRAHe runs a hand through his hair, messing up the sleekness.“But that’s okay,” I quickly add. “It’s okay if you care about your pack. You wouldn’t be so loved if you didn’t, and I don’t fault you for it in any way.”“I should care about myself more.”“A good leader is selfless.”“For how long?” He rasps, eyes red-rimmed. “How long will I continue to forsake and forfeit my happiness for my pack, for my kingdom?”He stands to his feet, stepping closer to me and I can’t maintain the eye contact. It’s not doing anything for my aching heart and so I turn away.“Go to your Luna. I believe there’s a banquet set up for both of you…to celebrate.”“I don’t want to!” He shouts. “Why do you keep pushing me into her arms? I’m trying to talk about us, Eira—”“There’s no us! Can’t you see? It. Is. Not. Possible!” I grit out. “We’ve tried but it cannot work, Cassian. I’m not pushing you into her arms, I’m reminding you that you have a Luna you should treat with respect!”

Fifty-Six: I Wouldn’t Believe YouEIRAAs soon as Oliver disappears from sight, I tug my arm from Cassian’s grip, glaring. “What do you want?”His jaw ticks. Without responding, he takes my hand and drags me further across the lake, and to a more secluded spot.I follow him grudgingly, my legs struggling to catch up with his brisk pace. When he eventually stops, I snatch my hand and cross my arms, unimpressed. My eyes are hard, lips pressed into a thin line.“Don’t get mad,” he says. “I just need to talk.”“You’ve dragged me here haven’t you? You can start talking. You’ve got my attention now.”“There’s no need to be hostile, Eira.” He frowns.I scoff. “Hostile? I’m not hostile, I’m upset. You rudely interrupted a conversation I was having, and then you dragged me here! Forgive me if I’m not smiling at you right now.”His Adam’s apple bobs on a swallow, and with a sigh, he sinks to the ground.“I’m sorry. It was uncouth of me.” Then, he pats the space beside him. “Can we talk?”The go

Fifty-five: The ProposalEIRAThe moment I burst out of the arena, I can finally breathe. My lungs expand, taking in much needed air. Tears prick the back of my eyes but I blink them away.Goddess, it hurts. The mark on my neck, the severed bond in my chest, even my new found wolf whines at the back of my mind.I welcome the cool air, as my feet lead me down the path toward the clearing.I’d known about the coronation. I’d known how badly Cassian wanted to talk to me about it. Probably to assure me, or ask for more time. But I had to protect my heart. Seeing him will do more harm than good. He has a duty to his pack, and I have to respect that.“Eira!”I freeze, frowning.Slowly, I turn around and exhale in relief when I see it isn’t Cassian, but rather the warrior that came with Quentin that day.“Hi?” I mentally face-palm when his name refuses to appear in my mind. “I’m so sorry, what’s your name again?”He smiles softly. “It’s Oliver.”Right.“Okay, hi Oliver,” I say stupidly.“Whe
