Nivia POV

On the third day, the plague touched skin.

I knew it before I opened my eyes.

The night had been restless. I kept waking, unsure if I’d dreamed the voices or if they were truly whispering over my bed.

Every time I forced my eyes open, the room was the same: faint light from the corridor through the gap under the door, Rachel’s slow breathing, the outline of her body in the other bed. No wraiths. No gray ribbons of smoke. Just shadows.

But the cold felt worse. It crawled through my bones like something alive.

Sometime before dawn, if dawn even meant anything now. I slipped into a shallow sleep. When the bell for morning prep blared, it felt like someone had slammed a door in my head.

I groaned and rolled onto my back.

For a moment, I just lay there, staring at the ceiling. The fan blades turned lazily, creaking. My blanket was piled up to my chin. Even under all my layers, I couldn’t get warm.

Rachel shifted in the other bed. “Turn it off,” she muttered, voice muffled by her

Nivia POV"How is that possible?" I asked, standing up with Justin's help. "We were just in the science lab. On our school grounds. There's no ocean for thousands of miles.""Magic," Mateo said again. "Powerful magic. Something or someone must have brought us here.""Or we're dreaming," I suggested hopefully. "A shared dream or hallucination or something."Justin tried to shift, to call on his wolf. Nothing. The block was still there, maybe even stronger than before."Still can't shift," He reported."Same," Mateo confirmed. We stood there on the beach, three teenagers with no idea where we were or how we'd gotten there. The sun beat down mercilessly, and I could already feel my skin starting to burn."We need shade," Justin said, taking charge. "And some water. Thereafter, we can figure out what the hell is going on."I nodded. For once, Mateo agreed with him without argument. "The trees will have shade. Maybe we can find fresh water inland."I looked between them, then out at the en

Justin POVThe moment before the lights went out, I saw something that made my blood run cold. The door we'd come through - it was gone. Not closed, not locked. Gone. Where it had been was just a solid wall. Then darkness hit, complete and absolute."Nivia!" I called out, reaching for where she'd been standing."I'm here," her voice came from my right, shaky but close. I found her hand and pulled her against me."Mateo?" she called."Right here," his voice came from nearby. "The door—" "It's gone." I cut him off."What do you mean gone?" Nivia asked, her body trembling against mine."The wall," Mateo said. "It's solid. Like there was never a door there."I felt him moving closer, probably feeling along the wall. I kept one arm around Nivia while reaching out with my other hand. My fingers hit smooth, cold wall where I knew the door had been."That's not possible," Nivia whispered."Magic," Mateo said grimly. "Has to be. Someone spelled this room."The darkness was so thick it felt li

  • Moonchild; The Rise Of the Lycans   Chapter 86: The Anonymous Note

Nivia POVI was half-asleep in History class when I felt someone tap my shoulder. Rachel leaned forward from the desk behind me."Someone slipped this into your locker," she whispered, handing me a folded piece of paper. "It fell out when I borrowed your textbook."I took the note, confused. My name was written on the outside in neat, unfamiliar handwriting. I glanced at Mr. Harrison, who was droning on about pack territories in the 1800s, then carefully unfolded the paper under my desk.*Come to the science lab. Third floor. 8 PM tonight. Don't tell anyone.*That was it. No signature, no explanation, nothing to indicate who'd sent it or why.I read it three more times, my heart beating faster with each reading. Who would send me an anonymous note? And why the secrecy?"What is it?" Rachel whispered.I quickly folded the paper and shoved it into my pocket. "Nothing. Just... someone returning notes they borrowed."She gave me a skeptical look but didn't push. I spent the rest of class

Mateo POVI stood there in the darkness after my father's image faded, the weight of his words crushing down on me. Bethel. My little sister who used to braid flowers into my hair when we were children. Who laughed like bells and danced in the rain. Now she was dying, another victim of a three-hundred-year-old curse. The chalk circle at my feet still smoldered slightly, and I scuffed it out with my shoe, erasing any evidence of the communication spell. No one could know. Three years I'd been here, and no one suspected I was anything more than a regular werewolf.Well, almost no one."Loki," I said internally, anger flaring. "You reported to father behind my back.""You weren't doing your job," my wolf responded, unrepentant. "Someone had to tell him the truth.""That wasn't your call to make.""Wasn't it? While you're here mooning over the girl, our people are dying. Our sister is dying."The reminder made my chest tighten. "You think I don't know that?""I think you've gotten too att

Mateo POVThe moonlight filtered through the dorm window as I lay in bed, exhausted from the chaos of the bonfire. David was now my new roommate. The former had dropped out of school after the plague, he'd left to learn a trade. But I knew his reason for leaving was more from fear than skill acquisition. Now, David snored softly across the room, completely oblivious to the turmoil in my mind. I couldn't stop thinking about Nivia - how she'd felt in my arms, how desperately she'd wanted me, how hard it had been to stop.I'd been this close–this close to making love to her. How I'd managed to stop was beyond me.Her arousal still lingered in my nostrils...she'd been so horny, so wet, so ready–"Mateo."The voice was soft, distant. I turned in my sleep, thinking David was calling me for something."Mateo St. Luca!"My eyes snapped open immediately, my entire body going rigid. That voice wasn't coming from outside. It was echoing inside my head, through the bond that connected me to my b

Justin POVI closed my father's office door behind me and leaned against the hallway wall, my mind racing. When he'd called me in at one in the morning, I'd been certain it was about the fight with Mateo. I'd prepared myself for the lecture - how the future Alpha shouldn't be brawling like a common wolf, how I needed to show more control, more dignity. But instead, he'd asked about Nivia. The careful questions, the probing about marks and supernatural abilities - he knew. Or at least, he suspected. Someone had told him something. Claire, probably.Did she really know or was she just spreading one of her usual rumors?I pushed off the wall and started walking toward my dorm, my footsteps echoing in the empty hallway. The truth was, I'd known for weeks now. Or at least strongly suspected. The birthmark on her thigh - a perfect crescent moon. The spirits she kept talking to that she thought I didn't know about. The way she'd ended the plague with sheer will. The silver smoke she'd cough
