River

I pulled the car to a smooth stop beneath the covered entrance of Maison Étoile.

Before I could step out, a valet was already approaching. I handed him the keys without a word before walking around the front of the car.

Zara had just opened her door when I reached her.

She looked up the building, her gaze slowly taking in the understated elegance of the boutique.

There were no oversized logos or glittering displays demanding attention.

“You ready?” I asked

She smiled. “Of course.”

River The file looked wrong before it was even placed on my desk. I had expected a lot of pages that contained names, addresses or something tangible. Instead, the folder looked like it had more questions than answers. The investigator sat across from me, his posture unusually stiff. He wasn’t always the type to look uncertain. That alone already gave me the impression that he had not found what I was looking for. “I’m sorry Mr Cassian, but I do not have anything solid. I was not able to uncover as much as I’d hoped. I rested my hands on the file and looked him dead in the eye. I had no intention of opening it. “What did you find?” He nodded once. “The first thing I found was that she was raised by her father when she was very little. Maybe five or six years old thereabout. Her mother passed. My expression did not change. I just waited for him to continue. “She spent most of her childhood in boarding school. Until she graduated high school.” He stopped speaking, as though

  • More than a billionaires contract    The conversation I couldn’t avoid

Zara The afternoon sun warmed my skin as I strolled along the busy sidewalk, blending into the steady rhythm of the city around me. I wasn’t in a hurry. If anything, I was intentionally taking my time. People hurried past carrying coffee cups, shopping bags, and briefcases, each of them focused on their own destination. The street was quite busy today. The traffic crawled along the street beside me, horns occasionally breaking through the murmur of conversations and footsteps. I adjusted the strap of my handbag and glanced at the time on my phone. Almost on cue, my phone began to ring. I smiled the moment Elizabeth’s name flashed across the screen. “Hello,” I answered, I had to project my voice so that she could hear me. “This is a pleasant surprise.” “I have news,” she announced without so much of a greeting. I laughed. “You couldn’t even pretend to ask how I was?” “Where are you? It’s quite noisy.” “I’m on the street. I want to get some of my skincare products.I have r

  • More than a billionaires contract    The truth about Zara

River Meetings had never exhausted me. People assume they did. They imagined hours of negotiations, presentations and endless discussions would wear anyone down. But they were wrong. Meetings were always predictable. People came in wanting one thing, but left with another, and somewhere in between, I made sure Cassian Holdings benefited the most. “Five percent is too aggressive.” One of the investors slid the proposal across the conference table. “The projected return doesn’t justify that level of expansion. “It does,” I replied evenly. I tapped the financial report in front of him. “You are looking at this quarter.” He frowned. “I’m looking three years ahead.” Silence settled over the room. Another investor adjusted his glasses before speaking. “The overseas market is volatile.” “So was this ten years ago.” I leaned back slightly. “We expanded anyway. And it even became one of our most profitable divisions.” No one argued. They just watched me. And for the next tw

ZaraI woke up to silence. For a few seconds, I simply lay there, staring at the unfamiliar ceiling as sleep slowly loosened its grip on me. Then the memories of last night came back rushing. I sat up and looked around. The room was empty. The second side of the bed untouched, the duvet neatly folded as though no one had slept there at all. He was gone. And I didn’t know whether to be relieved or disappointed. Slowly, I slipped out of bed, my bare feet sinking into the thick black rug beneath me. Only then did I look around. The room….it was so river. Everything was in black. The walls were deep charcoal. The sofa in his room was velvety black, the curtains so dark that it swallowed most of the morning sunlight trying to creep through the windows. I couldn’t help smiling. He really hadn’t been exaggerating when he said black was his favourite color. He apparently meant every single shade of it. The room was surprisingly neat. Everything was organized. I am very sure that h

  • More than a billionaires contract    Just a dream

RiverSleep refused to come. I had closed my laptop over an hour ago, yet I was still lying awake, staring at the ceiling. Every time I closed my eyes, I saw Zara standing behind me, shaking. What happened at the gala still played in my head nonstop. I turned to my side and stared at my door. With a quiet sigh, I pushed the covers away and left my room. The apartment was silent. Only the city lights filtered, casting pale ribbons of silver across the marble floor. I headed towards the kitchen, deciding a glass of water might succeed where sleep had failed. I had barely reached the end of the hallway when I stopped. A sound was coming from Zara’s bedroom. A broken whisper. My head turned towards her door and for a moment I simply listened. And then I heard a muffled cry. “Please….”My chest tightened. I found myself walking before I consciously decided to move. Each step felt strangely heavy. By the time I reached her door, I couldn’t hear anything. I just stood there, starin

  • More than a billionaires contract    Out of sight

River The ballroom shimmered beneath the glow of crystal chandeliers, the air filled with soft music and polite conversation. Laughter drifted from every corner. My attention remained fixed on the woman weaving through the crowd. She had gone to use the bathroom earlier, but she took more time than I had expected and I didn’t want to leave this spot, so she doesn’t find me. Heads turned as she passed, but she didn’t seem to notice. She was looking at me. A small smile curved her lips and I found myself returning it. Then someone stepped between us. For no more than a heartbeat. When the path cleared…..She was gone. My eyes swept across the ballroom. She couldn’t have gone far. A few guests crossed my line of sight. A waiter passed carrying a tray of champagne. A strange pressure settled in my chest. She had been right in front of me. I started walking, my gaze moving from one face to another. I told myself not to overreact. Maybe she was speaking to someone that recogni
