After taking the photo, I looked up. "You got any real paperwork? Never heard of a hotel fining its own guests."

She scoffed. "A lot of wannabes come in flashing attitude. You're eating bread in the lobby, bothering guests. Swipe your card and go."

People were staring now—same look of 'is this for real?' on every face.

I kept it together. "I ordered already. I was just hungry and—"

"Sure, you ordered. But rules are rules! You broke one, you pay. Or are you trying to ditch the bill?"

I shut it down. "Get Kevin Daley. I'm his sister."

She looked me up and down, sneering harder. "Our boss runs a real business. Every broke cousin thinks they can score a free meal. He's busy. Pay your bill—people are waiting."

It was the weekend, private rooms packed, so I'd been seated in the main hall.

I only had Demi with me. She finally snapped.

"What is wrong with you? We ate ONE piece of bread. How did that ruin anyone's day?"

The manager's face twisted. She yelled, "Security!"

Then turned to me, voice full-volume. "Miss, if you don't pay, that's on you. This is a six-star hotel with Michelin chefs. You roll in with some bargain bread? That trashes our image. OF COURSE there's a fine!

"Can't afford it? Don't fake it. Free music, free tea, your own snack, and six-star service? Acting like a victim? You SHOULD be fined!"

So that's how we got here.

Demi was ready to lose it, but I held up a hand. "Chill. I'll call my brother."

I rang him up. "What's going on at your hotel? Your manager's trying to hit me with a $128,000 charge!"

To my shock, Kevin just went, "It's not like you can't afford it. Just pay her."

I almost laughed. "Kevin Daley, if I don't see your resignation in ten minutes, deal with the fallout."

Hung up.

The manager snorted. "Still playing? What's next—calling the cops? A lawyer? I know your type. Flash a few pics, pretend you're somebody. Royalton's a national brand, six stars. Snap enough shots, maybe you'll bag a rich husband. So $128K? Pocket change, right?"

She wasn't just trashing me—she insulted everyone dining here.

I glanced at her name tag. [Lillian Haagen.]

"Ms. Haagen, you missed your calling. Should be out on the street reading tarot. Guessing people's lives without asking? You got x-ray vision now?"

Her face froze.

I didn't bother saying more. "Charge the card. I'm paying. And I want an official receipt—meal and fine, fully itemized."

She hesitated, then smirked. "Fine. I'll have someone prep it."

That's when a voice called from outside—

"Hold it!"

A scandal this big—at a six-star hotel—and not a single employee said a word? Yeah, I'm guessing fear of Lillian kept them quiet. But from where I stand, silence makes you part of it.If it looks rotten on the outside, it's been bad on the inside for a while. So, we shut the hotel down. On the spot. Everyone fired.Back at HQ, Mom took one look at me and gently patted my shoulder. "Don't blame yourself. You did the right thing. I know you still care about Kevin, but what he did? It can't be forgiven."I truly believed I raised him like my own—no different than if I'd given birth to him."But I was wrong. Some flaws... they're just in the blood."For the first time, she told me the truth about Kevin. His birth parents were street thugs—killed in a gang fight. He was just a kid, alone, crouched next to the hotel dumpster, guarding scraps like a stray. That's how my parents found him.Hearing that... yeah, it hurt."Mom," I said quietly, "you still have me. I'll do my best.""I

I laughed. "Already sent them the full report. CC'd all of Horizon Group. The board's latest notice just went out. Check your email."Kevin's hands were shaking as he pulled out his phone. One look at his inbox, and there it was—bold red headline: [Terminated from all positions. Permanently ineligible for rehire.]That's when it finally hit him. I wasn't bluffing. It was done. He was out—for good.He broke down right there. He knew what that meant. If he couldn't stay here, no one else would take him.Not even home. Finally realizing just how deep he was in, Kevin lunged over and grabbed my leg."Susie, I'm sorry. I was stupid—I got played by her. I messed up bad. Please, just talk to Mom and Dad for me. I swear I won't do anything like this again. Please..."I gave him a cold smile. "Remember how this hotel even got started? You used the family name to show off, raised money behind everyone's back, and set up a fake company to poach business from Mom and Dad. Tell me I'm wrong.

Mr. Spector kept going. "She also skimmed ten percent off every penalty. Total fines hit $2.3 million. Five hundred thousand was transferred to someone named Peter Carlsen—we've already frozen his accounts. Police are involved, and the money trail's under investigation."He flipped a page. "She also replaced the kitchen staff. Ms. Seymour personally chose the original chefs, but they were all swapped out for people Ms. Haagen knew. Ingredients too—HQ sent premium supplies, but cheaper ones were subbed in. In six months alone, that scam pulled in another $300,000."I said, "Menus, transactions, supplier invoices. It's all there. Kevin—explain."He stared at the papers, stunned. Then he snapped. Turned around and slapped Lillian hard."You bitch! You crazy bitch—using my money to keep some boy toy? Didn't you swear you were done with Peter? What the hell is this?"He shoved Lillian to the floor and started hitting her—again and again. More than a dozen blows. Her face swelled fast.

At this point, it didn't even matter who did it—Lillian, Kevin, both. Guilty's guilty. When he realized I wasn't bluffing, Kevin clenched his fists. "Susannah, was this really necessary? It was just a misunderstanding. I'll refund you, okay? No need to blow this up."I shook my head. "Too late. You had your shot—refund, talk, show me proof. Didn't do any of it. Now the audit's on, HQ's involved, and there's no undoing that."I smirked. "Oh, and fun fact? You're not even in the main group chat. The board's already got the full story."Kevin went ghost-white. He knew once I made a call, it was locked in—no one could change my mind. The audit pulled in over a hundred staff and just as many guests. Three hours straight. Lillian's face did a full color wheel—red, white, then green—before she finally lost it.She stormed up to me. "Enough! You're blowing this way out of proportion over a hundred grand! Fine, I'll give it back, okay?"And seriously, why go against your brother? You're

Kevin was adopted. He took Dad's last name, but I'm Mom's only kid—and Horizon Group? That's hers. Dad's ride-or-die for her, always has been.So yeah, I got her last name. I was born the heir, no debate.Everyone at Horizon knows it. Kevin does too. Thing is, he's never been good at anything. Every project he touched crashed hard.Mom gave him one last shot—this hotel. Sink or swim. If he blew it, he'd keep a title, but that'd be it. Zero power. He knew it. That's why he came crawling to me.And yeah, I helped. I practically lived at this place for six months—everyone on staff knows me.I handled everything: customer feedback, brand revamp, menu tweaks, even picked the chefs myself.Took half a year to get the hotel in shape. Once it finally started making money, I handed it to him.At first, it stayed solid—monthly profits, no drama. But six months ago, I noticed the cracks. Numbers weren't adding up.So I pushed for a site check. The second I sat down and ordered? I knew s

I paid without a word and asked her to issue a receipt. Once it printed, I checked the total and laughed, turning to the phone next to me."Check this out. This is my bill for one meal at our own hotel—$620K. And $128K of that? A fine."The boardroom looked like someone dropped a grenade. My mom didn't skip a beat. "Kevin Daley, you've got some nerve!"Kevin bolted over, eyes bugging out. "Susannah, you—you actually—""I called the board. Like I said—if I don't have your resignation in ten minutes, I lose."Lillian dragged him back, snickering at the screen. "She's really out here flexing with a bunch of geezers and grannies. What a clown."Why're you even talking to her?"This hotel's Kevin's family legacy. Him quitting? Hilarious."Kevin snapped. "Watch it. That's my mom."Lillian froze, then slapped on a fake smile. "Ma'am, you're Kevin's mom? I'm so sorry—I thought you were his sister!"Honestly, it's her fault. Sitting in a prime lobby seat, eating her own bread? Totally
