Vivian's POV

Standing on Sophie's doorstep, his expression dark and unreadable, was Ethan.

I stepped back, my hand flying to my mouth. "Oh no."

Sophie looked at me, her eyes wide. "What do you want me to do?"

I shook my head, my mind racing. I had been so careful, so sure that Ethan wouldn't know where I was. But of course he knew. He always knew. He had probably tracked my car, or had someone following me, or simply deduced that the only place I would go was my best friend's apartment.

Vivian's POV"You're staying with me tonight."The words hung in the air, final and absolute. I stared at him, my heart pounding, my mind spinning. I opened my mouth to protest, to argue. But before I could get a word out, Ethan stood. He moved fluidly, closing the distance between us in two quick strides. His hand found my waist, fingers splaying against the small of my back, and he drew me close. The warmth of his body pressed against mine, the faint scent of scotch on his breath mingling with the expensive cologne he wore."Don't make me raise my voice," he said, his voice low, almost a whisper. But there was steel beneath the softness. "Okay?"I nodded, the movement jerky. His grip on my waist loosened, but he didn't let go. Instead, he turned, guiding me toward the elevator. His hand remained on my back, a constant pressure, a reminder that I had no choice in this. The elevator dinged, and the doors slid open. The hallway was quiet, lined with doors that all looked the same. Eth

Vivian's POVI stood in the doorway of my room, staring at the box on the table. The elegant wrapping seemed to glow under the soft light, the silver ribbon catching the gleam of the chandelier. My heart, which had just begun to settle after the long drive home, kicked up again.I crossed the room slowly, my heels clicking against the hardwood floor. The box sat there, untouched and beautiful, waiting for me. The card rested on top, the handwriting neat and precise.I picked it up. The words were simple, but they sent a chill down my spine.“Put on the dress and meet me at The Grand Meridian for dinner.”Ethan's handwriting. There was no mistaking it… the sharp, angular strokes, the way he pressed hard into the paper. But this wasn't a note about a business meeting or a reminder about an event. This was an invitation. A command, really, dressed up in the guise of a romantic gesture.I looked at the note again, trying to understand what was going on. A dinner out of nowhere. After eve

Vivian's POVDaniel. He stood there, his hands shoved into the pockets of his tailored pants, a tentative smile on his face."Hey," he said, his voice soft. "I hope I'm not interrupting anything."I opened my mouth to speak, but no words came out. My heart was pounding, a wild, frantic rhythm that made it hard to think. This wasn't supposed to happen. He wasn't supposed to be here."Daniel," I finally managed, my voice barely above a whisper. "What are you doing here?"He took a step into the office, the door clicking shut behind him. "I came to thank you. For everything. I know you had something to do with getting me out of there."I shook my head, my mind racing. "I didn't… I mean, it wasn't…""Your husband," he said, cutting me off gently. "He bailed me out. Dropped all the charges. I don't know what you said to him, but it worked."I stared at him, the pieces slowly falling into place. Ethan had released him, just as he had said. But I hadn't expected Daniel to come here, to seek

Vivian's POVThe morning light crept through the curtains, pale and hesitant, as if it too was unsure about entering this house. I lay in bed, staring at the ceiling, the events of yesterday playing on repeat in my mind.I hadn't slept well. My dreams had been fragmented, strange, filled with images I couldn't quite grasp. Faces that blurred and shifted. Voices that echoed without meaning. But now it was morning, and I had to face the day.I pushed myself out of bed, my body heavy with exhaustion. The bathroom mirror revealed dark circles under my eyes, a pallor to my skin that made me look older than I was. I splashed cold water on my face, willing myself to wake up, to pull myself together.I couldn't hide forever. I had responsibilities, obligations. I dressed carefully, choosing a tailored navy suit that made me feel powerful, in control. I pinned my hair back, applied just enough makeup to hide the worst of the fatigue, and squared my shoulders as I looked at my reflection."You

His voice came through the door, muffled but unmistakable. "I know you're in there. Open the door."Sophie's eyes met mine, a silent question. “What do you want to do?”I took a deep breath, steadying myself. I couldn't hide from him forever. And if I didn't open the door, he would only find another way in."It's okay," I said, my voice barely above a whisper. "I'll handle it."I reached for the doorknob, my hand trembling slightly, and pulled the door open.E

Vivian's POVThe first thing I registered was the smell.Warm, buttery, sweet pancakes. My eyes fluttered open, and for a moment, I had no idea where I was. The ceiling was unfamiliar, painted a soft lavender instead of the stark white of my bedroom at the mansion. The sheets were soft cotton, not the expensive silk I was used to. And the light streaming through the window was warm and golden. Then it all came rushing back. Sophie's place. I stretched and sat up. The guest room was cozy, filled with personal touches… a stack of books on the nightstand, a flower pot, a framed photo of Sophie and me at a camp.I walked out of the room, following the delicious aroma to the kitchen. And there she was… Sophie, standing at the stove in her fuzzy socks and an apron flipping pancakes with practiced ease."Morning, sleepyhead," she said without turning around. "I was starting to think you'd sleep the whole day away."I leaned against the doorframe, a small smile tugging at my lips. "What time
