Chapter 26

Hospital.

The doctor told Jean that her grandma had cerebral hypoxia for too long. She was unlikely going to wake up and would be in a vegetative state. Even if she did, she might be paralyzed.

After staying by her grandma’s side for two days and a night, her grandma finally opened her eyes.

“It must be hard for you, Jean.” This was the first thing her grandma said.

She had apparently learned about what happened to Jean.

Jean could no longer control herself. Her suppressed river of emotions for the last few days burst its bank in front of her grandma.

Her grandma was the only one who loved and trusted her unconditionally in this world.

She might have come out of her coma and was out of danger, but she would probably be wheelchair-bound for the rest of her life.

The doctor told Jean that she needed to stay healthy and must not be subjected to any psychological shocks again.

Jean became suspicious. She had clearly instructed all the medical personnel not to tell her grandma about what happened to her. So why did her grandma still find it out?

But she did not dare to ask, fearing that it would affect her grandma again.

Jean had two days of peace when she took care of her grandma in the hospital, where she could temporarily forget about the problem outside.

But soon, a more cruel reality would jolt her out of her mental refuge.

Jean was peeling an apple for her grandma as they watched TV series together. It was entertainment news at the end of the episode, and Jean subconsciously wanted to switch the TV off. But her grandma stopped her.

“Just let me watch,” her grandma said.

An exaggerated voice came out on the TV. ‘Apart from Jean Mitchell’s scandals, we have another explosive revelation this week. It is about the real identity of Anne Garrison; she turns out to be the eldest daughter of the owner of Mitchell Corporation.’

Anne was seen standing in between Robert and Alana as the three of them cut a cake together.

It seemed that they were the actual family.

Jean stared at the TV dumbly, trying to figure out what that meant.

Anne was Alana’s daughter?

Her best friend turned out to be the biological daughter of her most-hated stepmom?

Anne knew all along that she was Robert’s daughter, and Anne deliberately got close to her?

Jean felt a chill washing down through her guts as if a poisonous snake entrenched itself inside her.

The fruit knife cut her finger, but she did not even feel a thing.

Drops of blood stained the white bedsheet red.

The news switched to the scene of Anne attending a commercial event and accepting an interview.

Anne wore a long azure dress and had a sweet smile on her face. She looked gentle and kind.

Then a reporter asked her about Jean.

“Jean is my best friend. I always believe in her, and I hope everyone can be more tolerant of her.”

“Jean stole Elaina’s boyfriend and caused Elaina to kill herself. How do you feel about that?”

Anne bit her lips and looked helpless. “Actually, I have lost contact with Jean for several days. I am worried about her. I have always deeply regretted what happened to Elaina. If news on the Internet was true, I hope Jean can come forward and own up for her mistake. If it is false, I hope she will also stand up for herself and tell the truth to prove her innocence.”

What Anne said was tantamount to hinting that Jean was indeed responsible for Elaina’s death.

Jean stared blankly at the TV, feeling hurt. She thought of the things that happened all this while, and she started to piece the puzzle together. She began to suspect that all this was a meticulous plot by her stepmom and best friend.

She felt like an idiot for being played for so long.

No wonder that Anne did not reply to her messages or answer her calls. Apparently, Anne was the one who sent her to the bed of a strange man and caused her to lose her virginity.

No wonder Anne just watched on while those men humiliated her at the party. Not only that, Anne even pulled the rug out from under her feet when she was smeared online.

She was not surprised that this mother-daughter combo was behind John’s revelation. No way John would come out to accuse her without getting any benefits for himself.

Jean felt like she had been slapped in the face.

She finally woke up from the lies.

She clenched the fruit knife in her hand, her eyes reddening. The pain in her heart suddenly spurred her to think of vengeance.

“I won’t let you face something like this again, grandma.”

Jean lifted her head and stared at Anne on TV. “It is time for them to pay back what they owe to my mom and me.”

She would make those people suffer from what she had gone through.

An unprecedented sense of destruction rose inside her. ‘Don’t you want to play? Bring it on!’
