Lies And Pain. Lyla Atelo. I was done buying the foodstuff from the supermarket and I had decided to get some chocolate. I wanted to use them as an apology gift to my best friend. No matter what happened, she was still the woman that was there for me when Michael was gone. She had been my own strength and pillar to keep going, always encouraging me to learn new skills and be better for myself. I pulled up in front of her mini mansion again, honking for the security to open the gate. I knew there were security cameras and the gateman would be able to recognise my car. My stomach churned in anxiety. How was she going to react to seeing me? We had a lot to catch up on, especially the fact that I had gotten the teaching job and she had bagged herself a boyfriend. Kendra always told me how much she hated men, and now, she called a man her boyfriend. Way to go, girl! I praised her in my mind as I drove inside after the gate was opened. "Welcome ma!" Sylvester, the gateman, waved at me. "The missus has guests over and they are at the pool." I waved back at him, sticking my head out of the car to flash him my brightest smile. "Thank you, Vester. I'll drop something for you when I'm leaving, okay? Just remind me." He nodded with the widest grin I had ever seen. With that, I drove deeper into the compound, reliving the memories of what had happened the last time I was here. I parked the car in the front of the house as usual, ditching the garage. I wanted to be out of here in a jiffy because I had guests to prepare a variety of meals for. I grabbed the six boxes of chocolate as I made my way around the house towards the swimming pool. I head giggles and splashes. Kendra was really having the time of her life. I paused in my steps and put the boxes of chocolate down for a moment. I whipped my phone out to call her. I needed something to find out how she would react if I showed up in front of her bearing gifts.. I could hear her phone ringing from a distance. I could hear when she hushed everyone and rushed to pick up her phone. I could hear the deep sigh... I guess it was by seeing my name flashing on her caller ID. My heart broke a little. Was she going to pick the call? "Hello?" I was initially stunned that she did answer. "How can I help you?" Her voice was cold. "Kendra..." I began, lowering my voice from where I stood. "About that night... I wanted to apologise. I was wrong. I couldn't have assumed such horrible things about you. Can I come over to your place? Let's talk things out..." She didn't reply for a few seconds before she breathed into the phone and answered. "Fine. You will only have two minutes, after that, I'm throwing you out." That brought a smile of relief to my face. "One second is all I need." With that, the call was cut off and I breathed out in relief. Things were going to get better. I tucked my phone away and bent low to carry the boxes once more, moving towards the corner that would burst towards the pool when I heard the conversation that ensued. "Who was that?" A voice that sounded vaguely familiar reached my ears. I presumed that the person was asking Kendra about me. "Nobody." Kendra answered immediately without missing a beat. "You remember the so-called wife of Michael Atelo? She's the one." The way she talked about me made me freeze in my steps. Why would she say that? "Oh, that girl?" The other woman chuckled. "Did you see her face when her husband was trying to explain things to her? The shock and shame... especially when it was more obvious that she cheated on him that night." "Yeah... I hate her guts!" Kendra laughed. "If we weren't paid by Michael, gosh, that sum was huge! But if we weren't paid, I swear I might have hit her in the face. She's too pitiful and weak for my liking. A country bumpkin! I wonder what Michael saw in her. He deserves much better than that thing!" There was a searing pain in my heart. My throat tightened and I could feel the beginning of tears glistening at the corners of my eyes. "What does she want from you, then?" This time, it was a man that spoke. And I instantly remembered who they were. The people from that night... The people that Michael had brought home to explain his innocence. "She wants to apologise! Imagine that..." Kendra said with an acrid tone. "Like I said... I wouldn't want to associate myself with that kind of woman, but her husband makes it possible for that to happen." My heart sank even further as I leaned in closer to listen. "What do you mean? Are you actually having sex with him?" The other woman seems so invested in the conversation. Kendra was quick to deny that allegation. "Of course not! Do you want to know how I built this mansion? It's all his money! He has been paying me for the last six years to keep an eye on his wife and build a good relationship with her. At first I thought he was only looking out for her, but he has an agenda. I know he's looking for a way to divorce her anytime soon." The more I listened, the more broken I got. I felt soulless. Helpless. Empty. So, this was all a lie? All of these? Kendra's friendship? It was all a lie? I dumped the boxes of chocolate on the ground, not caring if I was going to be heard or not, and turned back towards my car. From the minute my hands touched the ignition till the minute I finished cooking, my eyes were blurred with unshed tears. All I could feel was an unimaginable amount of pain. The pain I felt when my grandmother and mother were taken from me.Chapter 50The Twist.Lyla Atelo.“I'm not…”“…wealthy enough to purchase this? Of course I know that. Sage gifted this to you, right?” Her eyes were beaming in joy. She didn't look disgusted at all about anything.“What other things did he get for you?” She peered into the box that sat in front of us, trying to rummage through it.“You know I can't accept this, right?” Right now, I needed her support for me to turn down these gifts. It was too much. I couldn't handle something this big.“Why not?” Ivy paused and lifted her head to stare at me with a frown.“It's not right, and you know that.” I tried to stress out, but Ivy didn't seem to be following. “He is… you know, he's my student. I'm his teacher. This kind of thing isn't supposed to be going on between us.”Ivy's eyebrows rose further up and she rolled her eyes. “Take it as a simple gift from a student.”“Simple? You call this simple?” I pointed to the document that still lay on the table. “It's a freaking Jewellery store. Not
Chapter 49A Brand New Owner.Lyla Atelo.Sage wasn't in school for the rest of the week, and today was Friday. I had texted him over and over again, but he never responded. I was tempted to go over to his house, but I didn't want a repeat of the last time.I was currently sitting in my office when the door was forcefully pushed open, and my least favourite person walked into the office.“Hello, Sara.” I folded my hands on my table and sat up to face her squarely. She gave me a once-over before taking in my office as if she had never been here before.“Will Sage be coming for Camp?” She asked outrightly.“Excuse me?”“You heard me right. Or are you dumb?”I choose to ignore her choice of words. “I heard you loud and clear, but what I don't understand is why you're asking me.”“Aren't you the one he's fucking?” She said calmly, not at all fazed by the vulgarity of what she was saying.“If you were remanded in court and asked to prove those allegations, would you be able to?”“Don't you
Chapter 48Naughty Little Slut.Lyla Atelo.I woke up the next morning feeling refreshed and optimistic for some unknown reason. I turned to my side, watching Michael sleep peacefully beside me. I rolled my eyes and began to prepare for school.“You're quite late today. That's so unlike you.” Dominic, one of my male colleagues, pointed out as we walked side by side down the corridor.I shrugged. “I slept late, and I woke up late.”His mouth curved into a small smile, “Your husband kept you up all night, aye?” He teased slightly, and it took all of me not wince at his words.I forced a smile on my face with a little ‘heh heh’ to avoid the question. “So, are you prepared for the camping experience?”He understood my discomfort and immediately changed the subject. “I wasn't picked. There are only two male teachers coming while the rest are females. Aren't you aware of this?” He squinted as if trying to remember something. “Seeing that you're the coordinator of the camp?”“Coordinator?” I
Chapter 47Coming To Camp?Lyla Atelo.I came home with a stupid smile on my face. Sage had made my entire evening and I was just smiling like a fool.“You're back," my husband appeared from the corner of the doorway leading to the kitchen. He wore an apron which suggested that he was cooking.I frowned slightly at the sight of that, while waiting for him to complain that I had come home late.“I'm back, yes.” I smiled a little at him.“And in high spirits as well.” He noted that part, “I hope you had a great day at work.”“I did. How about you?” I shrugged off my shoulder bag which was beginning to get heavy and set it on the table, taking in a deep breath of what he was cooking.“I made dinner. Would you like some?” He noted the actions of my nose before asking, but I shook my head immediately.I knew my husband by now. I could guess what he wanted from me, but I waited for him to say it. Michael never did any nice things for me unless he wanted something in return, and this wasn't
Chapter 46Take Me Home.Lyla Atelo.Sage did not say anything until the car came to a stop in a luxurious shopping mall where he went back to driving mode, parking the car at the exclusive parking lot. He stepped out to open the car for me, taking my arm in his."What are you doing? Where are we going? Why are we here?" I asked him even if I could guess what exactly it was that we were doing here."Shopping." He shrugged. "I saw on the internet that you should take a woman shopping when she is angry. It— ""But I'm not angry. Why would I be?"He gave me a quick look before shutting the car. "Yeah, right, you aren't. But I'm here to apologise anyway."Amidst my protests, Sage had his arms hooked around mine until we reached one of the most expensive jewellery stores in the city."Pick anything you'd like. Diamonds. Gold. Silver. Precious stones. Anything." He said as he signalled one of the sales assistants to come over. The girl gave me a once-over, and she did not hide her displeasu
Chapter 45In The Car.Lyla Atelo."Get In the car, Lyla." Sage's voice came in a little stronger this time as he looked over my shoulders. "Unless you want your colleagues to keep speculating that something is going on between us."Our eyes met when he said that, and I paused to think. Did he also have in mind the same question I had? I wanted to ask if there was actually something going on between us, but I didn't dare voice my question out. I didn't want to sound desperate, but still... something that Michelle said earlier egged me at the back of my mind."What do you think about Ivy?" I averted my gaze from his face and looked down to the tarred road. I looked everywhere else but at him. "Is it true you're into older women, and I'm just one of your conquest?"I suddenly felt the cold night wind hit my skin, and I looked up in alarm to see Sage backing away from him. He stared at me with an emotion I couldn't decipher before spinning his car key between his thumb and index finger.
