I Love You. Lyla Atelo. "Go and freshen up. You need to look good for our guests. To show them how well I'm taking care of you." Michael had not noticed my swollen face, or maybe he didn't even care about it at all. All that mattered to him right now was his visitors and the role they were about to play in his company. "Okay." I washed my hands in the sink after laying out all the dishes on the dining table. I made my way upstairs. Tired and drained. Under the cold shower, the tears fell endlessly from my eyes. That feeling of loneliness had found its way into my heart again. That pain was tearing my heart from its apex up to its base. I was under the shower for close to thirty minutes when I heard pounding footsteps and my name being yelled. "Lyla! Lyla! Where are you?" It was Michael. He sounded panicked. I turned off the faucet and grabbed a towel to wrap around myself. "I'm here." I called back and opened the bathroom door. Relief instantly flooded his eyes as he took cautious steps towards me. "Hey... Are you okay?" He gave me a funny look and I couldn't help the frown that formed on my face. "Okay? What do you mean?" I was confused as well as I tightened my towel harder around my body. "I'm fine as you can see." "Kendra called me." His gaze was still steady on my face. "She said you were at her house a few hours ago. You dropped off some boxes of chocolates in the corner of her house." "Yes, I did that." I didn't deny anything. "I wanted to apologise to her for suspecting her of cheating with you." "What happened then?" He seemed eager to hear what I had heard Kendra said. "I heard so many things, Michael." My voice had gotten softer. I strode towards my wardrobe to grab something light to wear. "Something that is really hard to believe, Michael. And I feel more than betrayed." Michael was fast to reach where I was standing. He immediately pulled my hands into his and peered into my eyes. "Listen, Lyla. Kendra is not a good friend." He began immediately, as if trying to convince me of that fact. "You shouldn't believe anything that comes out of her mouth because she is a liar, and a very good one at that." "I don't doubt that." My lips curled into a derisive smile. What was he trying to do? Extract himself from the situation by spoiling Kendra's name? ...which was already spoiled, by the way. "Yes. She is. You mustn't speak to her ever again." He looked around for... my phone? "In fact, block and delete her number before she fills your head with lies and false rumors about me." "Rumors about you?" My eyebrows contracted together. "Why would she make up lies about you?" "I don't know." He shrugged. "Maybe she's just jealous of you and wants us to have issues... fight, or even divorce? I feel like she wants to take your place in my life. She wants to be my wife. But, I wouldn't make that happen. Only you, Lyla, only you are my wife. Only you will always be my wife! Kendra can dream all she wants but you're the only person my heart has space for." "Are you trying to say that she lied to me? That you never paid her to pretend to be my friend?" Michael paused and blinked for a few seconds. Guilt clouded his face as he hung his head low. "About that..." He began, more slowly than he has been rushing his sentences earlier, "She didn't lie. I did pay her. But I was only looking out for you." "Looking out for me?" My eyebrows pinched together. "Michael, you know how much I hate relationships that are based on lies! You know my last traumas from that. You know—" "I know, Lyla." He said dejectedly. "But, when we got married eight years ago, you were closed off from interacting with people. I brought you from the village and into the city. Everything was new to you. You wouldn't even talk to our neighbours, so yes, I had to pay her to become your friend. And when she did that, I saw how radiant you became. How happy you were to have a friend, and that was all that mattered to me. Your happiness, Lyla. I would pay anything to make you happy. I will give you the world, Lyla!" He said it with so much conviction that the pain in my heart began to dissipate slowly. "I love you, Lyla. I really do. And I may not say this every time but you're the best thing that has ever happened to me." His eyes glistened as he made a step towards me once more. "After a while, I realized that Kendra wanted more. More than the money I was paying her. She wanted me. And the more I pushed her away, the more she started filling your head with nonsense. For one, I didn't know she had made you apply to be a teacher. You could just be home while I provide everything. You shouldn't be lifting your finger to do something as big as working. That is beneath you, my beautiful wife." His words held me under a spell I stared into his honey brown eyes. I believed every word he said. Suddenly, every bad thing that had happened in the past few years between us didn't matter to me. This man right here was a good man. He was after my heart, and he was going to cherish it forever. My heart swelled in happiness once more. Suddenly, the doorbell rang. We both looked at each other knowingly. Our guests had arrived. "You're not leaving, right? You're staying here with me? And you'll come downstairs with me, as your husband, right?" He stared at me pleadingly... and something struck me. My heart shattered as fast as it had been mended. Michael had not confessed because he meant it, he confessed because he thought I was packing out of the house. He thought that I wasn't going to welcome his guests to show them that we were indeed a happy family. "Of course, I'm coming down with you as your wife." I told him with a small smile on my face. I hurriedly dressed up within three minutes. I didn't have the chance to apply any light makeup because our guests would have to stay out a little longer. Michael wouldn't want that. "Are you ready?" Michael asked from beside me as we stood in front of the door. "I am." I told him as I reached out my hand to open the door, my face wide with my fake smile. "Welcome to my—" My entire figure froze as I stared at our guests. What was Sage's butler doing in front of my doorstep?Chapter 50The Twist.Lyla Atelo.“I'm not…”“…wealthy enough to purchase this? Of course I know that. Sage gifted this to you, right?” Her eyes were beaming in joy. She didn't look disgusted at all about anything.“What other things did he get for you?” She peered into the box that sat in front of us, trying to rummage through it.“You know I can't accept this, right?” Right now, I needed her support for me to turn down these gifts. It was too much. I couldn't handle something this big.“Why not?” Ivy paused and lifted her head to stare at me with a frown.“It's not right, and you know that.” I tried to stress out, but Ivy didn't seem to be following. “He is… you know, he's my student. I'm his teacher. This kind of thing isn't supposed to be going on between us.”Ivy's eyebrows rose further up and she rolled her eyes. “Take it as a simple gift from a student.”“Simple? You call this simple?” I pointed to the document that still lay on the table. “It's a freaking Jewellery store. Not
Chapter 49A Brand New Owner.Lyla Atelo.Sage wasn't in school for the rest of the week, and today was Friday. I had texted him over and over again, but he never responded. I was tempted to go over to his house, but I didn't want a repeat of the last time.I was currently sitting in my office when the door was forcefully pushed open, and my least favourite person walked into the office.“Hello, Sara.” I folded my hands on my table and sat up to face her squarely. She gave me a once-over before taking in my office as if she had never been here before.“Will Sage be coming for Camp?” She asked outrightly.“Excuse me?”“You heard me right. Or are you dumb?”I choose to ignore her choice of words. “I heard you loud and clear, but what I don't understand is why you're asking me.”“Aren't you the one he's fucking?” She said calmly, not at all fazed by the vulgarity of what she was saying.“If you were remanded in court and asked to prove those allegations, would you be able to?”“Don't you
Chapter 48Naughty Little Slut.Lyla Atelo.I woke up the next morning feeling refreshed and optimistic for some unknown reason. I turned to my side, watching Michael sleep peacefully beside me. I rolled my eyes and began to prepare for school.“You're quite late today. That's so unlike you.” Dominic, one of my male colleagues, pointed out as we walked side by side down the corridor.I shrugged. “I slept late, and I woke up late.”His mouth curved into a small smile, “Your husband kept you up all night, aye?” He teased slightly, and it took all of me not wince at his words.I forced a smile on my face with a little ‘heh heh’ to avoid the question. “So, are you prepared for the camping experience?”He understood my discomfort and immediately changed the subject. “I wasn't picked. There are only two male teachers coming while the rest are females. Aren't you aware of this?” He squinted as if trying to remember something. “Seeing that you're the coordinator of the camp?”“Coordinator?” I
Chapter 47Coming To Camp?Lyla Atelo.I came home with a stupid smile on my face. Sage had made my entire evening and I was just smiling like a fool.“You're back," my husband appeared from the corner of the doorway leading to the kitchen. He wore an apron which suggested that he was cooking.I frowned slightly at the sight of that, while waiting for him to complain that I had come home late.“I'm back, yes.” I smiled a little at him.“And in high spirits as well.” He noted that part, “I hope you had a great day at work.”“I did. How about you?” I shrugged off my shoulder bag which was beginning to get heavy and set it on the table, taking in a deep breath of what he was cooking.“I made dinner. Would you like some?” He noted the actions of my nose before asking, but I shook my head immediately.I knew my husband by now. I could guess what he wanted from me, but I waited for him to say it. Michael never did any nice things for me unless he wanted something in return, and this wasn't
Chapter 46Take Me Home.Lyla Atelo.Sage did not say anything until the car came to a stop in a luxurious shopping mall where he went back to driving mode, parking the car at the exclusive parking lot. He stepped out to open the car for me, taking my arm in his."What are you doing? Where are we going? Why are we here?" I asked him even if I could guess what exactly it was that we were doing here."Shopping." He shrugged. "I saw on the internet that you should take a woman shopping when she is angry. It— ""But I'm not angry. Why would I be?"He gave me a quick look before shutting the car. "Yeah, right, you aren't. But I'm here to apologise anyway."Amidst my protests, Sage had his arms hooked around mine until we reached one of the most expensive jewellery stores in the city."Pick anything you'd like. Diamonds. Gold. Silver. Precious stones. Anything." He said as he signalled one of the sales assistants to come over. The girl gave me a once-over, and she did not hide her displeasu
Chapter 45In The Car.Lyla Atelo."Get In the car, Lyla." Sage's voice came in a little stronger this time as he looked over my shoulders. "Unless you want your colleagues to keep speculating that something is going on between us."Our eyes met when he said that, and I paused to think. Did he also have in mind the same question I had? I wanted to ask if there was actually something going on between us, but I didn't dare voice my question out. I didn't want to sound desperate, but still... something that Michelle said earlier egged me at the back of my mind."What do you think about Ivy?" I averted my gaze from his face and looked down to the tarred road. I looked everywhere else but at him. "Is it true you're into older women, and I'm just one of your conquest?"I suddenly felt the cold night wind hit my skin, and I looked up in alarm to see Sage backing away from him. He stared at me with an emotion I couldn't decipher before spinning his car key between his thumb and index finger.
