Tensed Questionnaire. Lyla Atelo. The rest of the week passed in a blur with me actively avoiding anything that would lead me to Sage. His message still balanced itself in my trash bin. "Mrs. Lyla?" I heard my name being called by a student, and I turned around to find the blonde-haired girl I had seen in the cafeteria sitting beside Sage's friend. I couldn't help the fear that gripped my heart because she was one of the few persons that Sage allowed around him. Did she come to deliver a message? "Yes?" "Can I help you with your books?" She didn't even wait for me to respond before she dragged the books from my arms. "Whew! This is extremely heavy!" She gestured to the thick textbooks that were now in her hands. "How do you walk around carrying this thing without falling over? Other teachers use their tablets to teach." She frowned before her eyes lit up again. "My name is Sara, by the way. I've heard so much about you from my boyfriend." Boyfriend? Panic almost seized me... Not only that, but why did I feel a tinge of jealousy as she said that word. Sage had a girlfriend and he was sending all those messages to me? "Sage Dominic?" I steadied my breath. Her eyebrows drew together before she broke into a wide smile. "Oh, no, silly!" She chuckled, then she pulled towards me and lowered her voice. "Although I wish that could be true. It's what every girl in the school wishes, but he is so cold and uninterested and scary. Like a god you can only look at from a distance without approaching. No one wants to risk the consequences that may follow if they try to get too close to him." "But you are close to him." I reminded her. "I saw you the other day in the Cafeteria with him." "You saw me with my boyfriend, Elijah Rudiyah. His best friend." She corrected me immediately, and I couldn't help the feeling of relief that washed over me. "Oh..." I vaguely remembered the boy that had tried to encourage Sage to have me fired. "So... What's your deal?" She asked. I was stunned that I paused in my steps. "Excuse me?" She didn't blink. "What's your deal with Sage Dominic, Mrs. Lyla? Are you blackmailing him or trying to extort money from him because of his rich background?" "What?" The fact that she kept a straight face while asking all these questions made me pissed. "Why would you insinuate that kind of thing?" She shrugged her shoulders. "My boyfriend seems to think so. He believes that that is the reason why you're still here in this school. The reason why Sage has not had you fired already... You know that you should be gone by now, don't you?" The words got stuck in my throat. Of course, I knew that. But how was I going to explain the situation to her? In fact, did it need any form of explanation? I sighed heavily and looked at the beautiful girl in front of me. "Have you, perhaps, asked Mr. Sage why he hasn't had me fired? I don't call the shots here." I told her. Something flashed across her eyes. Fear. I could see that much. So, she was scared of him as well. "That wouldn't be necessary." She faked a sweet smile my way. "Where is your office?" It seemed like she still had more questions to ask me. She was relentless. "Don't get me wrong for the questions that I'm constantly asking you..." She sighed slowly. "You know, nobody seems to understand Sage and why he does what he does. But at the same time, we wouldn't want anyone to try to take advantage of him when he decides to be kind. We are just looking out for our friend." "I understand." I said dryly, but I didn't understand her at all. I wanted to be done with this conversation as fast as I could. She followed me down the halls of the school quietly while carrying my books. I thought she finished talking until she brought up the one topic that I had successfully tried to avoid the whole week. "What happened to Mr. Teddy?" Her voice wasn't so low, but it wasn't echoing across the hallway. "For the umpteenth time, Miss Sara, I don't know what happened." I lied smoothly through my teeth, but the girl that was walking behind me was smarter. It was like she could see through me, the same way Sage always did. Sage... Why did I have to think about him again? "You're lying, and you know it." Her voice turned softer. "Everyone knows that he went to Sage to plead for your case. How did any of that escalate to Sage breaking his arm, firing him, and having him move across countries? Sage never goes that far. He only stops at relieving a teacher of his/her duties, and I know this because his best friend tells me everything." I wasn't aware that Sage had Teddy leave the country. Again, guilt clawed my insides for what had happened. I was the cause of all this. If only I had not... I shook my head a little too vigorously. "Honestly speaking, Miss Sara, from everything you've said, you've made me believe that Mr. Sage is unpredictable. And that was what happened. I don't know if Mr. Teddy had prior issues with him and he reacted that way. I don't exactly know the details." I could feel the girl's eyes on me. I could tell that she was debating whether to believe me or not. I hoped it was the former. The bell rang immediately we got in front of my office. Sara transferred all the books she was holding back to my hands and flashed me a big smile. "Well...it was nice meeting you, Mrs. Lyla. I hope we become really good friends in the future." She sashayed out of the office and into the corridor. I felt my shoulders relaxing as soon as she was out of sight. That questionnaire session with her was so intense. I dumped my books on the table and went to check my timetable. 'What class do I have to teach next?' I murmured to myself. My eyes travelled across my timetable that I had pasted on the wall, and my breath hitched. Business and Economics... In Sage's class.Chapter 50The Twist.Lyla Atelo.“I'm not…”“…wealthy enough to purchase this? Of course I know that. Sage gifted this to you, right?” Her eyes were beaming in joy. She didn't look disgusted at all about anything.“What other things did he get for you?” She peered into the box that sat in front of us, trying to rummage through it.“You know I can't accept this, right?” Right now, I needed her support for me to turn down these gifts. It was too much. I couldn't handle something this big.“Why not?” Ivy paused and lifted her head to stare at me with a frown.“It's not right, and you know that.” I tried to stress out, but Ivy didn't seem to be following. “He is… you know, he's my student. I'm his teacher. This kind of thing isn't supposed to be going on between us.”Ivy's eyebrows rose further up and she rolled her eyes. “Take it as a simple gift from a student.”“Simple? You call this simple?” I pointed to the document that still lay on the table. “It's a freaking Jewellery store. Not
Chapter 49A Brand New Owner.Lyla Atelo.Sage wasn't in school for the rest of the week, and today was Friday. I had texted him over and over again, but he never responded. I was tempted to go over to his house, but I didn't want a repeat of the last time.I was currently sitting in my office when the door was forcefully pushed open, and my least favourite person walked into the office.“Hello, Sara.” I folded my hands on my table and sat up to face her squarely. She gave me a once-over before taking in my office as if she had never been here before.“Will Sage be coming for Camp?” She asked outrightly.“Excuse me?”“You heard me right. Or are you dumb?”I choose to ignore her choice of words. “I heard you loud and clear, but what I don't understand is why you're asking me.”“Aren't you the one he's fucking?” She said calmly, not at all fazed by the vulgarity of what she was saying.“If you were remanded in court and asked to prove those allegations, would you be able to?”“Don't you
Chapter 48Naughty Little Slut.Lyla Atelo.I woke up the next morning feeling refreshed and optimistic for some unknown reason. I turned to my side, watching Michael sleep peacefully beside me. I rolled my eyes and began to prepare for school.“You're quite late today. That's so unlike you.” Dominic, one of my male colleagues, pointed out as we walked side by side down the corridor.I shrugged. “I slept late, and I woke up late.”His mouth curved into a small smile, “Your husband kept you up all night, aye?” He teased slightly, and it took all of me not wince at his words.I forced a smile on my face with a little ‘heh heh’ to avoid the question. “So, are you prepared for the camping experience?”He understood my discomfort and immediately changed the subject. “I wasn't picked. There are only two male teachers coming while the rest are females. Aren't you aware of this?” He squinted as if trying to remember something. “Seeing that you're the coordinator of the camp?”“Coordinator?” I
Chapter 47Coming To Camp?Lyla Atelo.I came home with a stupid smile on my face. Sage had made my entire evening and I was just smiling like a fool.“You're back," my husband appeared from the corner of the doorway leading to the kitchen. He wore an apron which suggested that he was cooking.I frowned slightly at the sight of that, while waiting for him to complain that I had come home late.“I'm back, yes.” I smiled a little at him.“And in high spirits as well.” He noted that part, “I hope you had a great day at work.”“I did. How about you?” I shrugged off my shoulder bag which was beginning to get heavy and set it on the table, taking in a deep breath of what he was cooking.“I made dinner. Would you like some?” He noted the actions of my nose before asking, but I shook my head immediately.I knew my husband by now. I could guess what he wanted from me, but I waited for him to say it. Michael never did any nice things for me unless he wanted something in return, and this wasn't
Chapter 46Take Me Home.Lyla Atelo.Sage did not say anything until the car came to a stop in a luxurious shopping mall where he went back to driving mode, parking the car at the exclusive parking lot. He stepped out to open the car for me, taking my arm in his."What are you doing? Where are we going? Why are we here?" I asked him even if I could guess what exactly it was that we were doing here."Shopping." He shrugged. "I saw on the internet that you should take a woman shopping when she is angry. It— ""But I'm not angry. Why would I be?"He gave me a quick look before shutting the car. "Yeah, right, you aren't. But I'm here to apologise anyway."Amidst my protests, Sage had his arms hooked around mine until we reached one of the most expensive jewellery stores in the city."Pick anything you'd like. Diamonds. Gold. Silver. Precious stones. Anything." He said as he signalled one of the sales assistants to come over. The girl gave me a once-over, and she did not hide her displeasu
Chapter 45In The Car.Lyla Atelo."Get In the car, Lyla." Sage's voice came in a little stronger this time as he looked over my shoulders. "Unless you want your colleagues to keep speculating that something is going on between us."Our eyes met when he said that, and I paused to think. Did he also have in mind the same question I had? I wanted to ask if there was actually something going on between us, but I didn't dare voice my question out. I didn't want to sound desperate, but still... something that Michelle said earlier egged me at the back of my mind."What do you think about Ivy?" I averted my gaze from his face and looked down to the tarred road. I looked everywhere else but at him. "Is it true you're into older women, and I'm just one of your conquest?"I suddenly felt the cold night wind hit my skin, and I looked up in alarm to see Sage backing away from him. He stared at me with an emotion I couldn't decipher before spinning his car key between his thumb and index finger.
