Chapter 2

Author: Against the Flow
I heard footsteps and bolted before I even thought about it.

When I got back to my room, everything inside me collapsed. Those words cut slowly, first scraping through my thoughts and then tearing into my chest like a dull knife.

Asher's words wouldn't stop echoing in my head.

"No. I only approached her to get revenge and destroy her family's company."

I didn't want to believe it, but I'd heard every word.

I felt cold under the weight of that brutal truth. My love for him had shattered. I tried to keep my head, but my chest tightened like a vise until I struggled to breathe.

Still, I refused to cry out. I pressed my hand over my mouth, yet a broken sob escaped between my fingers. Then, I collapsed onto the floor and cried in silence to drain out every bit of pain.

I never thought our meeting had been planned as payback. Even Asher's love turned out to be something he had calculated.

Back then, I went against my parents' wishes and applied to study abroad as an exchange student.

After graduation, I stayed overseas for work. Because I wanted my freedom, I stopped going home and started living on my own terms.

That was until I met Asher abroad, the man everyone said was the son of Mom and Dad's sworn enemy.

Rumor had it that the Searles and the Klines once combined their funds and went into business together.

When the market shifted, my parents pulled their investment, which sent Kline Group into a downward spiral. Asher's mother later died under the strain.

In the years that followed, Searle Group and Kline Group fought for every deal until the rivalry turned openly hostile.

I knew exactly who Asher was. But he had saved me more than once, so I let go of my misgivings.

The first time, I was swarmed by a gang of female thugs and beaten bloody. He showed up like a savior, drove them off, picked me up, and rushed me to the hospital.

The second time, I was hunted down by hardened criminals. Asher fought them barehanded, pulled me clear of their knives, then walked away battered and bleeding.

The third time was when a male coworker slipped a drug into my drink. Just before everything went sideways, Asher burst in, took the guy down hard, pulled me out, and handed me something to counter the drug.

That was how I fell for Asher.

People tried to warn me off. They said we were doomed because of the bad blood between the Searles and the Klines.

But I didn't listen. I still wanted him.

Even though Asher kept turning me down and staying distant, I went after him with everything I had for three years. On his birthday, I made myself the gift and teased him every way I knew how.

Afterward, he held me close with a soft smile. "You little temptress. I'm about to lose my mind over you."

I smiled in satisfaction and traced circles over his chest. "You can't help wanting me, because you're into me."

Asher's smile widened. "Fair point. How about a few more rounds?"

He lowered his head, kissed me, then we slipped right back into the heat of it. From that day on, we were officially together.

I had always believed our feelings were real. I even looked forward to the day Asher would meet Mom and Dad so we could finally end the feud between our families.

Only now did I realize everything had been a lie. It hurt, but I forced myself to stay clearheaded. I decided to walk away from him for good.

Before leaving, I decided to leave Asher a gift. After the way he crushed my feelings, there was no way I was letting it go. Nothing made my blood boil like a lie.

My grief had already burned into anger, and I formed a plan to return the favor.

Soon after I regained my composure, the door opened from the hall, and Asher walked in. "Babe, you're up."

I paused, then put my sweet smile back on. "Yeah. I missed you so much that I couldn't sleep."

Asher wrapped his arms around me from behind, his breath warm against my neck. "By the way, your birthday's in two weeks. I'm throwing you a party, and I'm going to propose there."

I stared at him, stunned. "You're proposing?"

He nodded and brushed my cheek. "We've been together a long time. It's time to make it official."

I tensed on instinct. My expression became flat with displeasure. "What are you doing here? You're not welcome."Grace gave a wry smile and raised her glass in a small toast. When I didn't move, her face tightened. "I know I schemed against you before. It's fair if you don't like me."I kept quiet, pointing at the door to tell her to go.She looked helpless, and she kept her voice low. "I'll say my piece, and then I'll leave."I wasn't interested, so I refused. "Just go!"Grace looked stricken, torn, and miserable. "I'm not here to cause trouble. I just want to hear what you think."I looked at her, confused. She lowered her head, keeping her tone breezy as she said, "Asher is still in the hospital. He was healed, but he wouldn't leave. He didn't want to face reality.""That has nothing to do with me," I replied flatly. She smiled self-deprecatingly. "I know it doesn't. But he's been wanting to see you."I frowned. "We already met. We said all that needed to be said."My co

Mom and Dad headed out, giving Kurt and me some privacy. He started to pull me close, but he stopped halfway.I leaned in and wrapped my arms around him. I tilted my head up, worried that my past with Asher might get in the way of what we had."Does what happened between Asher and me bother you?"He shook his head, his voice as soft as ever. "That was your past. I'm here for your future."His words got to me so much that a tear slipped out before I could stop it."If I'd known you had feelings for me back then, maybe I wouldn't have fallen for someone I never should have loved," I said.Kurt sighed, blaming himself. "That's on me. I left you out there alone, and you ended up getting hurt."He held me tighter, like he didn't want to let me go.I shook my head and rose onto my toes, pressing a quick kiss to Kurt's lips. "This isn't on you. Things turned out the way they were supposed to. I'm just glad I didn't miss you."My words eased his face into a relieved smile. He leaned d

Asher watched as Mom, Dad, Kurt, and I walked away, his eyes wide with shock. He still couldn't wrap his head around what he'd just seen, because the truth had hit him hard.Jealousy and anger burned through him while regret and guilt closed in. He couldn't accept that I, who was once so close and affectionate with him, now loved Kurt and was about to marry him.As I was about to get into the car, Asher rushed toward me again.Bitter resentment and pain blazed in his eyes, and his voice was rough as he yelled, "Rhea, you still love me! You're just torturing me, getting back at me, aren't you?"I looked up and gave him a cold, mocking smile. "I got my revenge the day I walked away. We're even now. We're nothing. I'm not wasting another ounce of energy on you. You're not worth it."Not wanting him to keep hanging on, I said what anyone would have called cruel. "I hate you. Just looking at you turns my stomach. I'll never forgive you."Those words alone were enough to break Asher.

Asher lowered his head, shame flickering across his face as pain filled his eyes. "I know I was wrong. I'll spend the rest of my life trying to make it right."I shook my head slowly. "Don't bother."Then, I pushed him away and kept walking. But he didn't give up. He caught up to me and pulled me into his arms, holding me so tight I could barely breathe. His voice took on a pleading edge. "Babe, don't go."He then asked carefully, "What would it take for you to forgive me? Just tell me. Whatever it takes, I'll do it."I was about to speak when Kurt stormed over, his face a mask of fury. He yanked me back and smashed his fist into Asher's face.Kurt's eyes became menacingly cold, and his voice was raw with barely contained rage. "Asher, I'll cut your hands off if you lay a hand on her again!"Asher stared at Kurt, stunned, and wiped blood from the corner of his mouth. If this had been before, Asher would've fought back and made Kurt pay. Now, he just looked at me miserably and s

After Asher showed up, I lost all interest in shopping.Kurt caught on and asked, "Why don't we move somewhere else?"I shook my head. "I don't want to go through all that hassle."Kurt frowned, testing the waters. "If he keeps bothering you, it'll ruin your mood. Do you want me to talk to him and set things straight?"I shook my head again, not wanting Kurt to get involved. "It's my issue. I'll take care of it."He still looked worried. "If it gets too much, I'll handle him."I nodded.I thought that if I shut Asher out, he'd finally understand and back off. But I was wrong. He kept showing up every single day as if he were obsessed. He even somehow got my number and started calling and texting me. The first time I answered, I hung up immediately. When he texted, I blocked him.He even pushed Finn to set up a meeting. I wouldn't see Asher, but I thought meeting with Finn might convince him to talk Asher into leaving me alone. In the garden, Finn spotted me and hurried over,

Asher's face darkened, and his voice sounded tight with urgency. "I have to see Rhea today."Finn frowned and shook his head. "Slow down for a second. Think about what you're going to say, and how you plan to ask for her forgiveness."A dull shadow crossed Asher's eyes as he rubbed his temples.Finn hesitated, then added, "You'll have to face her parents, too. Be ready."Asher's gaze darkened. His face hardened into something complicated. "I get it."He looked up at the unfamiliar city and let out a quiet sigh. "I never thought I'd actually show up here because of love."Finn arched an eyebrow and teased, "Isn't it because you fell for her? You can still walk away while there's time."Asher shot Finn a sharp glare, then headed for the garage. He had come this far. He wasn't about to turn back.Finn trailed after him and asked, "Asher, if you see her, and she ignores you, what are you going to do?"Asher's gaze remained steady. "I'll keep trying until she finally gives me a cha
