Chapter 3

Author: Against the Flow
I gripped the brow pencil in my hand and forced a smile. "Really? You actually want to marry me?"

Asher paused, his eyes turning dark and impossible to read, before a slow smile formed. "Of course. Make sure your parents come. They shouldn't miss something this big."

I kept the smile fixed, nodded as if I were touched, and hugged him tightly. "Asher, does the feud between our families not matter to you at all?"

His body went stiff. I couldn't see his face, but the hatred rolled off him.

"I love you, so none of that matters."

Asher lowered his head, kissed my forehead, and began to move down.

I turned away and pushed him back. "I'm tired."

He froze, a shadow flickering in his eyes before it cleared. "Alright. Go back to sleep."

With that, he turned and walked into the bathroom.

I watched Asher as he headed for the shower, a bitter smile tugging at my lips. Everyone else kept their proposal plans secret, but he'd told me his right away.

If I hadn't overheard that conversation today, I would've kept waiting, happily and cluelessly, until those videos blindsided me and turned me into the town joke.

He built up my hopes just so that he could crush them. All he wanted was to drag my name through the mud and humiliate Mom and Dad.

It was vicious.

Restless and irritable, I got up and started packing.

Asher came out of the bathroom and saw every gift he'd ever given me piled on the floor. Confused, he asked, "What are you doing?"

I didn't look up. "I don't want them anymore. I'm throwing them out."

I meant to ditch the gifts the same way I was ditching his love.

Asher didn't think much of it. He figured I was just bored with them. "Fine. We'll buy new ones."

I said nothing and kept packing.

The next day, I received a strange text.

The message said, "I'm Asher Kline's fiancee. Meet me at noon at Serenity Restaurant. And don't tell him."

The shock drained the color from my face, and my grip tightened around the phone before I realized it. I needed to know who she was.

At noon, I arrived just as scheduled. A waiter led me to a private room in the corner.

I opened the door and spotted her right away. She was stunning, gentle, and demure. She wore a white dress with subtle makeup, and everything about her seemed effortless and graceful.

I took the seat across from her and kept my face neutral.

She looked at me, a flash of cold in her eyes. "I'm Grace Turner, Asher Kline's fiancee."

I arched an eyebrow, keeping my voice even. "So?"

Grace went still, clearly not expecting me to be so composed. Confused, she said, "You're the woman he's been seeing. Aren't you even a little curious about why he's engaged?"

I shrugged, lifted the coffee from the table, took a sip, and said nothing.

Before I came, I had been curious and braced for anger. But the moment I saw her, every question fell away, and my heart went quiet. I felt calm to my core.

I realized then that I had already let Asher go.

I gave my all whenever I loved someone. When it ended, I would walk away without a second thought.

Grace was exasperated when I stayed quiet. "Our families have already arranged the marriage. The wedding is in a month, so do yourself a favor and leave."

She pulled a bank card from her bag and placed it on the table between us. "There's eight million dollars on that card. Consider it enough to take care of you for the rest of your life."

I stared her down. My voice stayed flat. "Does he know you're doing this?"

She gave a smug smile. "Of course. In the end, he's the one who set the wedding date."

I scoffed.

It turned out that Asher had set this up from the beginning. He'd planned to weaponize those videos to get even with me. Then, he'd marry Grace and pretend none of it had happened.

I got to my feet and raised my voice. "Stop contacting me. Whether you marry him is your business, not mine."

My tone turned to pure sarcasm as I continued, "I'm doing fine financially. Your little humiliation game won't work. Quit showing off and acting superior."

With that, I turned to leave.

I had taken only a few steps when Grace hurried forward and blocked my way. "You're not leaving. You still haven't promised to stay away from him for good!"

I tensed on instinct. My expression became flat with displeasure. "What are you doing here? You're not welcome."Grace gave a wry smile and raised her glass in a small toast. When I didn't move, her face tightened. "I know I schemed against you before. It's fair if you don't like me."I kept quiet, pointing at the door to tell her to go.She looked helpless, and she kept her voice low. "I'll say my piece, and then I'll leave."I wasn't interested, so I refused. "Just go!"Grace looked stricken, torn, and miserable. "I'm not here to cause trouble. I just want to hear what you think."I looked at her, confused. She lowered her head, keeping her tone breezy as she said, "Asher is still in the hospital. He was healed, but he wouldn't leave. He didn't want to face reality.""That has nothing to do with me," I replied flatly. She smiled self-deprecatingly. "I know it doesn't. But he's been wanting to see you."I frowned. "We already met. We said all that needed to be said."My co

Mom and Dad headed out, giving Kurt and me some privacy. He started to pull me close, but he stopped halfway.I leaned in and wrapped my arms around him. I tilted my head up, worried that my past with Asher might get in the way of what we had."Does what happened between Asher and me bother you?"He shook his head, his voice as soft as ever. "That was your past. I'm here for your future."His words got to me so much that a tear slipped out before I could stop it."If I'd known you had feelings for me back then, maybe I wouldn't have fallen for someone I never should have loved," I said.Kurt sighed, blaming himself. "That's on me. I left you out there alone, and you ended up getting hurt."He held me tighter, like he didn't want to let me go.I shook my head and rose onto my toes, pressing a quick kiss to Kurt's lips. "This isn't on you. Things turned out the way they were supposed to. I'm just glad I didn't miss you."My words eased his face into a relieved smile. He leaned d

Asher watched as Mom, Dad, Kurt, and I walked away, his eyes wide with shock. He still couldn't wrap his head around what he'd just seen, because the truth had hit him hard.Jealousy and anger burned through him while regret and guilt closed in. He couldn't accept that I, who was once so close and affectionate with him, now loved Kurt and was about to marry him.As I was about to get into the car, Asher rushed toward me again.Bitter resentment and pain blazed in his eyes, and his voice was rough as he yelled, "Rhea, you still love me! You're just torturing me, getting back at me, aren't you?"I looked up and gave him a cold, mocking smile. "I got my revenge the day I walked away. We're even now. We're nothing. I'm not wasting another ounce of energy on you. You're not worth it."Not wanting him to keep hanging on, I said what anyone would have called cruel. "I hate you. Just looking at you turns my stomach. I'll never forgive you."Those words alone were enough to break Asher.

Asher lowered his head, shame flickering across his face as pain filled his eyes. "I know I was wrong. I'll spend the rest of my life trying to make it right."I shook my head slowly. "Don't bother."Then, I pushed him away and kept walking. But he didn't give up. He caught up to me and pulled me into his arms, holding me so tight I could barely breathe. His voice took on a pleading edge. "Babe, don't go."He then asked carefully, "What would it take for you to forgive me? Just tell me. Whatever it takes, I'll do it."I was about to speak when Kurt stormed over, his face a mask of fury. He yanked me back and smashed his fist into Asher's face.Kurt's eyes became menacingly cold, and his voice was raw with barely contained rage. "Asher, I'll cut your hands off if you lay a hand on her again!"Asher stared at Kurt, stunned, and wiped blood from the corner of his mouth. If this had been before, Asher would've fought back and made Kurt pay. Now, he just looked at me miserably and s

After Asher showed up, I lost all interest in shopping.Kurt caught on and asked, "Why don't we move somewhere else?"I shook my head. "I don't want to go through all that hassle."Kurt frowned, testing the waters. "If he keeps bothering you, it'll ruin your mood. Do you want me to talk to him and set things straight?"I shook my head again, not wanting Kurt to get involved. "It's my issue. I'll take care of it."He still looked worried. "If it gets too much, I'll handle him."I nodded.I thought that if I shut Asher out, he'd finally understand and back off. But I was wrong. He kept showing up every single day as if he were obsessed. He even somehow got my number and started calling and texting me. The first time I answered, I hung up immediately. When he texted, I blocked him.He even pushed Finn to set up a meeting. I wouldn't see Asher, but I thought meeting with Finn might convince him to talk Asher into leaving me alone. In the garden, Finn spotted me and hurried over,

Asher's face darkened, and his voice sounded tight with urgency. "I have to see Rhea today."Finn frowned and shook his head. "Slow down for a second. Think about what you're going to say, and how you plan to ask for her forgiveness."A dull shadow crossed Asher's eyes as he rubbed his temples.Finn hesitated, then added, "You'll have to face her parents, too. Be ready."Asher's gaze darkened. His face hardened into something complicated. "I get it."He looked up at the unfamiliar city and let out a quiet sigh. "I never thought I'd actually show up here because of love."Finn arched an eyebrow and teased, "Isn't it because you fell for her? You can still walk away while there's time."Asher shot Finn a sharp glare, then headed for the garage. He had come this far. He wasn't about to turn back.Finn trailed after him and asked, "Asher, if you see her, and she ignores you, what are you going to do?"Asher's gaze remained steady. "I'll keep trying until she finally gives me a cha
