Chapter 1

Author: Anna Smith
By the time I returned to the hotel, my stomach hurt so badly that I could barely stand straight.

A New Year’s Eve celebration was underway in the lobby.

Staff members in red-and-gold uniforms moved through the crowd carrying star lanterns, while children chased one another with festive cookies in their hands.

The receptionist saw how pale I was and hurried over to support me.

“Miss Bennett, would you like me to contact your companions?”

I shook my head.

“No. I can manage.”

Not long after I took my medicine, Ethan’s laughter came from outside the door.

“That last picture was the best one. They could use it to advertise the New Year’s celebration.”

The door opened.

When Rowan saw me sitting on the edge of the bed, his steps faltered.

Lily was wearing his coat and holding a glowing star lantern in her arms.

Ethan tossed a paper bag onto the table.

“We brought you dinner. Eat it while it’s hot.”

The food inside had already gone cold. Frosting and cookie crumbs clung to the top of the bag.

Rowan walked over to me, his gaze dropping to my boots, which were damp with melted snow.

“You went out?”

“Yes.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

His words sounded like a reprimand, but the way he watched me made it clear he was testing me.

I put my stomach medicine back into my bag.

“There wasn’t any bottled water in the room, so I went downstairs to buy some.”

The tension in his face finally eased.

“It’s crowded outside. Don’t wander off alone.”

He thought I had never gone to the central square.

He had no idea I had heard everything they said.

Lily placed another paper bag on the table.

Inside were three red star ornaments, three New Year’s commemorative pins, and three activity cards covered in stamps.

She pushed Rowan’s and Ethan’s toward them, then placed her own in the middle.

There was nothing for me.

When she noticed where I was looking, she seemed to suddenly realize it.

“I wanted to collect one for you, but the staff said you had to participate in the activities yourself to get them.”

Ethan waved his pin in the air.

“Besides, your stomach was bothering you. You wouldn’t have been able to enjoy any of it.”

Rowan added casually,

“Claire doesn’t like flashy little things like these.”

He sounded so certain.

As though he had not been the one who ran all over Shadow Pack with me when we were eighteen, searching for a star lantern.

Back then, he had promised to give me a new one every New Year’s Eve.

Four years had passed, and he had forgotten.

But Lily was holding the star lantern Rowan had personally won for her.

Two wolves stood side by side on its shade, with a sentence printed beneath them.

[Walk into the New Year hand in hand, together year after year.]

Ethan laughed.

“Rowan and Lily won that in the couples challenge.”

Lily’s cheeks turned pink.

“It wasn’t a couples challenge. We were paired at random.”

“You were randomly paired and still got all ten questions right?” Ethan raised an eyebrow. “Rowan even knew your favorite frosting flavor.”

Before Rowan could respond, Lily suddenly drew in a sharp breath.

Her new shoes had rubbed the skin raw on the back of her heel, and a small patch of blood had seeped through her sock.

Rowan immediately crouched in front of her.

“Why didn’t you say something sooner?”

“I was having so much fun that I didn’t notice.”

Rowan saw the bag of medicine beside me and picked it up.

“Do you have any bandages in here?”

The bag contained only my stomach medicine and anti-diarrheal pills.

He rummaged through it, then tossed it back onto the table.

“Aren’t you a healer? Why aren’t you carrying even the most basic first-aid supplies?”

I had brought the medicine I needed.

Why was I supposed to anticipate that Lily might need a bandage?

“There’s a first-aid kit at the front desk,” Ethan said.

Rowan was already helping Lily to her feet.

“Come on. I’ll take you downstairs and get that treated.”

Lily glanced at me, then looked up at Rowan.

“Claire has taken her medicine, so she should be all right, shouldn’t she?”

She quickly shook her head.

“You should stay with her. I can go to the front desk by myself.”

Rowan turned and tucked the blanket more securely around me.

“You’ve taken your medicine, so get some sleep. We can all go out together tomorrow.”

Ethan was already heading for the door.

“I’ll ask what time tomorrow morning’s New Year’s activities start while we’re down there.”

After the door closed, I opened my laptop.

The invitation Blood Moon Pack’s Chief Healer had sent me three months earlier was still sitting untouched in my inbox.

She had invited me to join Blood Moon Pack’s healing center and offered me an independent treatment room of my own.

I had never responded.

Rowan had promised that once he became Alpha, he would build a new healing center in Shadow Pack and appoint me as its Chief Healer.

After he proposed on New Year’s Eve, I would become his Luna and protect Shadow Pack at his side.

I had given up the chance to leave because I believed in that future.

But now, whoever Rowan chose to stand beside in the central square as the New Year began had nothing to do with me.

I opened the email and typed one sentence.

[I accept your offer and formally request a permanent transfer to Blood Moon Pack.]

After I sent it, a notification appeared on the screen.

[Your pack transfer will officially take effect at midnight tomorrow.]

Five years later, I completed my first assignment with Blood Moon Pack. The pack officially appointed me Deputy Chief Healer of the healing center.Mara handed me the appointment letter.“Will you stay?”I turned to the final page and signed my name without hesitation.“I will.”In the past, every decision I made began with Rowan.Would he like it? Would he be disappointed? Would it make him leave me?Now I finally understood that I did not need anyone’s permission to live my own life. That winter, I traveled to the werewolf capital as Blood Moon Pack’s representative at a healers’ conference. When the conference ended, Rowan was waiting for me by the exit.Five years had passed. He had officially become the Alpha of Shadow Pack and seemed far more composed than before.Mutual acquaintances had told me that Shadow Pack’s healing center had been completed and that my name had been added to the list of people who originally helped plan it.For five years, Rowan had sent me an apology thr

Rowan waited outside Blood Moon Pack’s healing center for three days.On the first day, he asked the front desk to pass along a message.[I’m outside. Come talk to me.]On the second day, his tone still sounded like a command.[Avoiding me won’t solve anything.]On the third day, he finally softened his approach.[I can explain the milk and the pass.]I did not reply to any of his messages. It was not that I did not want to hear his explanation. There was simply no reason to hear it anymore. On the fourth day, Shadow Pack’s current Alpha personally ordered Rowan to return. The new healing center could not open on schedule, and two healers who had agreed to join were beginning to reconsider.Rowan had no choice but to return to Shadow Pack that night. Before leaving, he asked the front desk to deliver one final message.[Once I’ve dealt with the healing center, I’ll come back for you.]He still refused to accept that I was not waiting for him. When Rowan returned to Shadow Pack, Lily wa

The next afternoon, I had just finished seeing my last patient when I spotted Rowan outside the healing center. He stood beside a car, looking exhausted from the journey, with a suitcase at his feet.Ethan and Lily had not come with him.The moment he saw me, the tension in his brow finally eased.“Pack your things and come back to Shadow Pack with me.”I removed my gloves.“I’m not going back.”Rowan’s expression darkened.“You’ve been making a scene for a week. Haven’t you had enough?”“The healing center’s opening has been delayed, and our apartment is sitting empty. You permanently transferred without saying a word and left everyone else to clean up your mess. Are you enjoying this?”I looked at him calmly.“I handed every completed document over to the Council.”“As for the apartment, you can let anyone you want live there.”He stared at me.“What about me?”“Didn’t you make your choice when you gave my place in the central square to Lily?”Rowan suddenly froze.“You went to the c

  • My Alpha Chose Her, So I Left Forever   Chapter 7

During my first week at Blood Moon Pack’s healing center, I left early every morning and returned late almost every night.During the day, I treated patients and tended to the patrol guards’ injuries. At night, I organized patient records and medication lists, often working until well past midnight. The work was exhausting, but no one treated my efforts as something they were entitled to.The treatment plans I proposed were discussed seriously, and my name was included on every patient file I organized. Even when lunch was being prepared, Mara would make a point of reminding everyone,“Claire’s stomach is still recovering. Save her something light.”These things should have felt ordinary, yet it took me several days to get used to them.On Friday afternoon, the healing center was scheduled to take its first full staff photo.Out of habit, I stepped aside.“I can take the picture for you.”Mara immediately grabbed my arm.“You’re part of the healing center too. Where do you think you’re

Dawn was just beginning to break when I arrived at Blood Moon Pack.Mara, the Chief Healer, met me at the border. When she saw that I had brought only one suitcase, she paused.“That’s all you have?”“It’s enough.”She did not ask any more questions. Instead, she handed me a cup of warm oat milk.“I checked the label. It doesn’t contain any dairy. Your stomach is still recovering, so take today to rest.”I wrapped my hands around the cup and quietly thanked her.The moment I crossed the border, the scent of Blood Moon Pack surrounded me. The last trace of my connection to Shadow Pack disappeared completely from the depths of my mind.Mara took me to the healing center. At the end of the hallway was a bright treatment room with plenty of natural light. A new nameplate had already been placed beside the door.[Claire Bennett, Resident Healer.]“This is the private treatment room I promised you.”Mara handed me my ID badge.“Welcome to Blood Moon Pack.”I stared down at it for a long time

  • My Alpha Chose Her, So I Left Forever   Chapter 5

Just after midnight, Rowan received a notification from the Pack Administration Office.[Claire Bennett has permanently transferred out of Shadow Pack.]He stared at the words, his expression growing darker by the second.Ethan leaned over to read the notification, then laughed.“She actually filed for a permanent transfer. Claire is making this as dramatic as possible to force you to go after her, isn’t she?”Lily asked quietly,“But she took her luggage with her. What if she really isn’t coming back?”“She’ll come back.”Rowan answered without the slightest hesitation.“She spent four years planning this trip. There’s no way she would just walk away.”For the past four years, whether he forgot one of our promises or abandoned me at the last minute to be with Lily, I was always the one who gave in first.Every time I did, it made him more certain that I always would.Rowan immediately called my number, but all he heard was a message saying that I could not be reached. Then he tried to
