Chapter 3

Author: TJ
Three days before the Recognition Ceremony, Mother caught me off guard by asking me to meet her for afternoon tea at the lakeside lodge.

“Just you and me,” she said. “I thought we could talk about what you want to do after Recognition.”

I knew better than to make too much of it.

Still, something small and hopeful stirred inside me.

Maybe this time, she actually wanted to know what I wanted.

I booked a table by the windows for two the next afternoon.

I made sure to get the table with the best view of Blackthorn Lake.

Mother loved watching the mountains reflected on the water, and I wanted everything to be just the way she liked it.

I arrived half an hour early.

I ordered the wild-berry scones Mother always liked and asked them to bring out her favorite tea when she arrived.

Then I waited.

Half an hour after our reservation, I texted her.

An hour later, I called.

Two hours later, a server came by and quietly replaced the pot of tea that had gone cold.

By the fourth hour, almost every table around me had turned over at least once.

Mother still hadn’t come.

At 6:47, my phone finally lit up.

A message from her.

Something came up. We’ll do this another day.

Before I could answer, a photo appeared in the Blackthorn family group chat.

Sienna had sent it.

Look what Mom helped me choose for Recognition. Aren’t they perfect?

She was holding up both hands.

Her nails were painted a pale moon-white, tiny crystals arranged along each one like scattered stars.

Mother replied first.

Perfect for my beautiful girl.

Rowan answered seconds later.

They look good on you.

Even Father responded.

Very elegant.

I stared at the picture until the crystals blurred.

So that was the emergency.

Mother had left me waiting at the lodge for four hours because Sienna needed her help choosing a manicure for Recognition.

I should have known better.

But some stupid part of me had believed her when she said she wanted to talk about what came next for me.

I stayed long enough to finish the food I had ordered for both of us.

Then I drove home alone.

The living room looked like Recognition preparations had exploded across it.

Garment bags covered one sofa. Several pairs of shoes were lined up beside Sienna’s gowns.

An old Blackthorn heirloom necklace lay open on the coffee table. Of course, it belonged to Sienna.

Mother stood behind Sienna, holding different ceremonial wraps against her shoulders.

She looked up as soon as I walked in.

“Where have you been? The ceremony is three days away, and you haven’t helped with anything.”

“I waited for you for four hours.”

Mother’s face changed immediately.

“I told you something came up. I’ve spent the entire day getting things ready for Recognition, and you walk in here looking for another reason to be upset with me.”

My eyes dropped to Sienna’s freshly jeweled nails.

“Her manicure was the emergency?”

Rowan stood from the sofa.

“We’ve been busy all day. Everything for Recognition has been handled, including your things.”

His voice sharpened.

“Do you seriously expect Mom to drop everything just so you can sit around for hours talking about yourself?”

The room went quiet.

Sienna slowly lowered her hands.

“Rowan, stop,” she said softly. “Aria’s right. Mom should have gone. My appointment wasn’t that important.”

But she had let Mother stay with her anyway.

Mother’s lips tightened.

“I was trying to make sure Recognition was perfect for both of you. Somehow, no matter what I do, Aria always finds a reason to make me feel like I failed her.”

Father looked at me, disappointment settling across his face.

“That’s enough, Aria. Your mother has been working all day. The least you could do is appreciate it.”

And just like that, I was the one who had ruined the evening.

All I had done was say what happened.

Before, I would have apologized.

I would have found some way to convince them—and myself—that I had overreacted.

That night, I was too tired.

“All right.”

I turned and went upstairs.

Two things were waiting on my bed.

A pair of ceremonial gloves.

And a cream-colored Recognition wrap I recognized immediately.

It belonged to Sienna.

She had worn it once and said the embroidery made her look like somebody’s grandmother.

Apparently, it was mine now.

That was everything Mother had “spent the entire day getting things ready” for me.

I picked it up and traced the embroidered Blackthorn crest along the edge.

For years, I had believed there was some version of me they would finally choose.

If I became stronger. If I achieved more.

Or, if I needed less.

Eventually, they would have to see me.

Standing there with Sienna’s discarded wrap in my hands, I finally understood.

They had seen me all along.

They had simply decided I was the daughter who could handle being overlooked.

Four years later, I graduated from Moonridge.Rowan had kept in touch. Most of his messages were simple.Mom still goes into your room sometimes.Dad added your name to the Blackthorn Council succession records.Sienna moved out of the pack house. And every few months:Do you think you’ll ever come back?I rarely replied. Not because I still hated them.I had simply built a life that no longer revolved around Blackthorn.By my third year, I was representing Moonridge students in leadership forums with visiting Alphas and Pack Council members. The first time Professor Warren asked me to lead a negotiation exercise, I remembered how nervous I had been just to speak at that table.By senior year, I no longer waited to be asked.People listened when I spoke.A week before graduation, Professor Warren called me into his office.“The Leadership Center is expanding its Pack Mediation Program next year,” he said. “I want you on the team.”It was a full-time position. One that would let me work

Father had sent only one message.Your new ceremonial collar is ready. Come home. That was Father. As Alpha, he was used to giving orders and having the entire Pack obey them.At home, he wasn’t much different. So I knew what that message meant. He had ordered a new collar because he knew the old one had been wrong. He was fixing it.In Father’s mind, that was probably as close as he would ever come to saying he was sorry.Once, I might have taken it.But I didn’t want it anymore. Two days later, the email arrived.Congratulations. You have been selected for the Moonridge Leadership Program.I read it three times before I believed it.Our first session was the following Monday. When I arrived at the Leadership Center, most of the students were already seated around a long table. For a second, I stayed near the door.Every chair seemed taken except one near the front, and I wasn’t sure whether it was meant for me.Professor Warren looked up.“Aria. Perfect timing.”He gestured to the em

For the next several days, Rowan barely stayed at the pack house. He spoke to the wolves assigned to the northern and southern borders, called the airports, and checked with Pack security to see whether anyone had seen me leave. Then he started contacting people.Former teammates. Wolves I knew from neighboring Packs. Anyone he could remember me mentioning. No one knew where I was.Eventually, Rowan went to the regional Inter-Pack Registry.Any wolf planning to live outside their home territory for an extended period had to register the move there. At the front desk, Rowan gave the clerk my name.“I’m looking for Aria Blackthorn. I’m her brother.”That made the clerk pause.“Her brother?”Rowan frowned.“Yes. I need to know if she filed anything here.”The clerk’s confusion deepened.“But Aria already left for Moonridge.”Rowan went still.Another registry officer was passing behind the desk. At the sound of my name, she stopped.“Did you say you’re Aria Blackthorn’s brother?”“Yes.”T

Recognition morning had the entire Blackthorn pack house moving before sunrise. They were almost ready to leave when Sienna hurried downstairs.“Mom, Aria’s room is empty. I don’t think she came back last night.”Mother turned sharply.“What do you mean, empty?”“Her suitcase is gone.”Rowan glanced at the time.“She probably went straight to the Council Hall.”“Without telling anyone?” Sienna asked.“She’ll be there.” Rowan didn’t sound worried. “Aria always shows up when she’s supposed to.”Mother let herself believe him.I might be upset. I might sulk, argue, even disappear for a night. But I had spent my entire life doing what Blackthorn expected of me.Mother had no reason to believe today would be any different.Less than an hour before Recognition began, Mother finally texted me.Where are you? We’re already at the Council Hall. The message went unanswered.By then, the Council Hall was filling with wolves from Blackthorn and several neighboring Packs. At the front of the hall,

The day before the Recognition Ceremony, the Blackthorn pack house was rather busy.Father spent most of the morning confirming which Alphas and Pack representatives had arrived.Mother checked Sienna’s gowns, jewelry, and ceremonial gifts over and over, as though one missing detail might ruin the most important day of her daughter’s life.Rowan barely left Sienna’s side.He picked up two of her friends from the airport, met with Pack security, then went to the Council Hall himself to make sure everything had been arranged exactly the way she wanted. No one asked if I was ready. On the table beside the front entrance sat a thick envelope from Moonridge University.I had left it there on purpose. The university crest was printed across the front, with ADMISSIONS OFFICE beneath it.It had been sitting there for days.No one had opened it.They were so focused on arranging Sienna’s next chapter that they never noticed mine had already begun without them.I changed my shoes and slipped out
