Penulis: Chill-Free Coffee

Chapter 1

Penulis: Chill-Free Coffee
When my mate and the Alpha of the Silvermoon pack, Ares Hamilton, was forced to choose between saving my mother or retrieving his lover's late mother's keepsake, he chose the keepsake without hesitation.

By the time Ares finally learned that my mother, Celia Hale, had died, he wept and begged for my forgiveness. But by then, I was long gone.

To the left, beneath an overhang in the rock wall, Mom was cornered by three Rogues with her back jammed against the stone.

Even worse, a boulder wedged in a crack above her head had been loosened by the Rogues' heavy blows with a steel pipe. Now, bits of stone were breaking off and tumbling down.

One jagged chip grazed Mom's ear, opening a cut along her cheekbone.

To the right, two Rogues hacked at an iron chest that held Margaret's keepsake.

Lillian Parker gripped Ares' arm as her whole body shook. "That's… That's my mom's keepsake."

"Ares! That rock above my mom's head is about to fall!" I shouted.

I had no patience for Lillian's feeble plea. My throat tightened as I grabbed Ares' arm and tried to drag him to the left. "Let me through! Even if all I can do is shove that rock away from my mom, I have to try!"

Ares caught my wrist, his knuckles whitening. "Your wolf is too weak. You'd just get in the way."

His eyes swept over the fight, and he frowned. "We have to save them both. Wait a little longer."

"Wait?" I said incredulously.

I watched a steel pipe smash into Mom's arm. She stumbled and slammed into the wall.

The boulder above her shook again, the crack widening another half inch. My eyes welled with tears. "Wait for the rock to crush her? That chest is just an object. My mom is alive!"

Ares didn't answer, but he suddenly barked an order toward the rear, "Send half the team to protect the chest! If Margaret's keepsake gets smashed, no one will hear the end of it! The rest of you…"

His eyes shifted to the two young werewolves in the group. They had only recently awakened their wolves and were barely three months into training.

Just yesterday, they couldn't even hold a dagger steady during sparring. Now, their faces were ashen as their hands shook around their blades.

"You two, go get Celia out of there," Ares ordered.

The two young werewolves turned as white as sheets, their knees almost knocking from their shaking.

"Ares, are you out of your mind?" I wrenched free from his grip. "They can't even protect themselves! You're sending them to their deaths with my mom!"

"We're short on warriors." He pulled me back, his voice cold and unyielding. "Margaret's keepsake can't be destroyed. It's all Lillian has left to remember her mom."

"What are you saying?" I stared at him in disbelief.

On Mom's side, one of the Rogues kicked at the wall. The boulder above shuddered with a heavy rumble, scattering more debris.

I tried to rush over, but I was yanked back again.

A vein throbbed at Ares' temple. He was clearly losing patience. "Evelyn, stop! We'll handle it in order. Once the chest is safe, we'll get your mom."

"In order?"

I saw the two young werewolves being shoved forward by their comrades, inching toward the rock face.

They had barely gotten within 30 feet when a shower of stone chunks fell from above. They immediately crouched and covered their heads, too scared to move.

I looked back at Mom. She was gritting her teeth, trying to sidestep, but a Rogue kicked her in the knee and slammed her into the wall.

The boulder above lurched hard. The crack now nearly split it in two.

I forgot everything else. My knees buckled as I clutched Ares' jacket, my voice breaking. "Ares, I'm begging you! Please! Save her! She's the only family I have left. Please save her…"

He glanced down at me. Something flickered in his eyes, but Lillian's choked cry cut through. "The chest!"

The Rogues seemed convinced it held something valuable. They hammered at its metal sides again and again.

Ares' brow twitched. He charged over with a team.

On Mom's side, a Rogue, apparently irritated, swung a steel pipe at the rock beside her.

With a deafening crash, the boulder finally gave way and plunged downward.

"Mom!" I cried out.

I could only watch as the boulder crashed down over her.

I bolted forward in a frenzy.

Ares secured the chest and took down the Rogues. He held a trembling, nearly fainting Lillian in his arms as worry etched across his face.

"Lillian's shaken. I'll take her back first."

With that, he left, and the rest of the warriors followed.

I barely heard him.

In front of me, Mom lay sprawled in the rubble. Her back was torn open where the boulder had hit, and blood soaked through her shirt. Her breathing was shallow.

My hands shook as I rolled her over. She forced her eyes open and looked at me.

Her lips moved, but no sound came, and only a froth of blood at the corner of her mouth appeared.

"Mom! Hold on!" I clutched her tight, my tears falling onto her face. "I'm going to get the pack healer! I'll go right now!"

When I saw Ares in such a broken state, all I felt was disgust.Being tangled up with someone like him was nothing but torment."Ares, you're not doing this because you truly understand what you did wrong. You just want to ease your guilt," I said with a sneer. He froze, then shook his head frantically. "No! That's not it! I want to get back together with you. I can't lose you!""Get back together with me?" I glared at him.My voice was as cold as ice as I spoke. "You caused my mother's death. How dare you say that? Do you really think things can go back to the way they were?"Ares' face went deathly pale. Despair churned in his eyes as the truth finally sank in. There was always going to be a gap between us that could never be crossed. How had it come to this? He had only wanted to repay Margaret for saving his life and to care for Lillian, who had lost her mother.Perhaps Lillian's pitiful act had fooled him, but deep down, he always knew he loved me. If he didn't, he never

In the days that followed, Vex took me to the Black Wolf pack. He told me about everything he'd been through over the years. After escaping the wasteland with enemies on his heels, he drifted from place to place, barely hanging on. Eventually, his grandfather sent people to search for him. They brought him back to the Black Wolf pack and raised him with great care. With his exceptional courage and ruthless determination, he eventually succeeded in claiming the Alpha King's throne."When I left back then, I swore I'd become strong enough to protect you all. But by the time I came back, it was already too late," he said.Vex stared into the bonfire outside the tent, speaking in a low and rough voice. He pressed his knuckles to his forehead, guilt weighing down his every word. "Evelyn, I failed to protect your mother."I shook my head, feeling my eyes burn with tears. "It wasn't your fault."…A week later, the Silvermoon pack sent the bond-breaking agreement, signed in Ares' crook

Vex carefully folded the burial certificate and handed it back to me. His expression was back to its usual cold look, though a hint of chill still lingered in his eyes."Evelyn, don't be afraid. From now on, you have me," he said, his voice low and unwavering.I took the certificate and slowly closed my fingers around it. Then, I turned my gaze to Lillian, who was still crumpled on the floor. "Lillian, did you enjoy your performance?" I asked calmly. Her lips trembled, and her face was drained of color. "That… That hide contract is fake! The two of you must have planned it together!"But the panic in her eyes had already betrayed her. The werewolves in the room looked at her with nothing but disdain and contempt.Ares' expression grew darker by the second. His fists were clenched so tightly that the knuckles turned white. "Lillian?"There was an edge to his voice, carrying a faint tremor he likely hadn't noticed himself.Lillian covered her face and began to cry, tears slippin

Lillian clapped a hand over her mouth, looking as if she'd been utterly scandalized. "Evelyn, how could you forge a burial certificate?"The moment the words left her lips, the other werewolves' expressions darkened. Their eyes on me turned sharper and more scrutinizing. The tension in Ares' shoulders eased, and a trace of relief crossed his face. He was just about to speak when a deep, commanding voice rang from the doorway. "Seven days ago, I was at that funeral myself. Are you saying I'm lying too?"The speaker was Vex Osborne, Alpha King of the Black Wolf pack.Moonlight streamed over his broad-shouldered frame, and his black cloak pooled on the floor. His stance was straight and unyielding, and his gaze was as cold as steel. He scanned the room before looking at me. For a brief moment, I thought I saw a flicker of emotion stir in their still depths."Alpha King!""Why are you here?"In an instant, Ares' imposing demeanor crumbled. He dropped to one knee, with the rest of t

Only then did I notice that the wolf plush in Lillian's arms was already mangled beyond recognition. The living room of the main house was packed, and rows of werewolves stared at me with unreadable expressions."I just got back. How could I have touched your wolf plush?" I questioned.I pushed myself up from the floor, ignoring the sharp pain in my knees from hitting the stone tiles.Lillian clutched the destroyed wolf tighter as tears spilled down her cheeks. "Yes, you just got back, but… but your mother came to my door last night. She must have hated me for taking Ares away from you."A chill shot through me from the soles of my feet, and the absurdity almost made me laugh out loud.Mom had been buried for seven days, yet Lillian was still trying to pin the blame on her. After Lillian spoke, she brought forward a werewolf. He confidently claimed that he had seen Mom come here last night to destroy the wolf plush.Ares' brows knitted in disgust, his gaze as if he were lookin

Ares' expression darkened. His voice turned low and cutting as he said accusingly, "Are you using Celia's condition as a way to compete with Lillian for my attention?"Didn't I have someone watching over her? The Rogues were already gone. How could anything have happened to her?"These past few days, Ares had been off at Hot Spring Valley with Lillian, comforting her after she'd been "frightened".He hadn't returned to the Silvermoon pack at all, so of course, he didn't know Mom hadn't survived long enough to see a pack healer.Lillian cast me a timid glance, her voice barely more than a whisper. "Evelyn, please don't curse your mother like that."My throat tightened, and all that came out was a ragged whimper as tears streamed down my face.Lillian spoke again in a soft and deliberate tone. "Didn't the pack healer just say last time that your mother was the strongest werewolf in the pack?"My gaze turned sharp, and I glared at her deceitfully innocent face.Strongest werewolf?
