Chapter 4

Author: Chill-Free Coffee
Only then did I notice that the wolf plush in Lillian's arms was already mangled beyond recognition.

The living room of the main house was packed, and rows of werewolves stared at me with unreadable expressions.

"I just got back. How could I have touched your wolf plush?" I questioned.

I pushed myself up from the floor, ignoring the sharp pain in my knees from hitting the stone tiles.

Lillian clutched the destroyed wolf tighter as tears spilled down her cheeks. "Yes, you just got back, but… but your mother came to my door last night. She must have hated me for taking Ares away from you."

A chill shot through me from the soles of my feet, and the absurdity almost made me laugh out loud.

Mom had been buried for seven days, yet Lillian was still trying to pin the blame on her.

After Lillian spoke, she brought forward a werewolf.

He confidently claimed that he had seen Mom come here last night to destroy the wolf plush.

Ares' brows knitted in disgust, his gaze as if he were looking at something filthy. "You and Celia really are cut from the same cloth. Both are just as vicious."

My grip on the agreement tightened until my knuckles turned white. "My mom's been dead for seven days. How could she have been at your door last night?"

Everyone looked doubtful. They clearly didn't believe me.

Lillian's sobs grew louder, and her voice trembled as she said, "Evelyn, even until now, you're still making excuses?"

Ares' expression was stormy, and his tone was as sharp as a blade. "Even with proof staring you in the face, you're still lying? Get Celia out here! She's going to answer for this!"

Murmurs rippled through the crowd, their barbed whispers pricking at my skin.

"No wonder Alpha Ares can't stand her. She's malicious. She must've learned it from her mother."

"At least Lillian's decent. Anyone else would've broken by now."

My hands shook harder around the contract, and my nails bit into my palms. "Then go check! The patrol guards from last night are still here. Go ask them!"

Ares barked a cold laugh. "We already have a witness, and you still want to deny it? Do you think we're all idiots?"

Beside him, Lillian quickly lowered her gaze, but I caught the flicker of guilt in her eyes as clear as daylight.

I turned to leave, ready to find the patrol guards myself, but Ares yanked me back by the arm.

"Where do you think you're going?" His grip was crushing, like he meant to snap my bones. "Going to find someone to back up your story?"

"Let me go!" I fought to pull free, my voice hard with final resolve. "If my mom really did it, then have the guards tell you themselves!"

"Enough!" Ares shoved me away and glared at the others. "This is a family matter. There's no need to make it the pack's business!"

I let out a sharp, bitter laugh that cut through the tension in the room. "Family matter? Ares, you're defending an outsider who dares to smear my late mother's name!"

"You still dare talk back?" His expression darkened with fury as he raised his hand to strike me.

I didn't move. Instead, I pulled a burial certificate from my cloak, made of cured hide and signed by the werewolf who handled the funeral.

"Take a good look!" I slammed it into his face. "My mother, Celia Hale, was buried in the mountains seven days ago! While we laid her to rest, you were in Hot Spring Valley with Lillian, picking wild fruits!"

The certificate slipped to the floor. Ares stood frozen, staring down at the werewolf's seal before looking back up at me with shock in his eyes.

When I saw Ares in such a broken state, all I felt was disgust.Being tangled up with someone like him was nothing but torment."Ares, you're not doing this because you truly understand what you did wrong. You just want to ease your guilt," I said with a sneer. He froze, then shook his head frantically. "No! That's not it! I want to get back together with you. I can't lose you!""Get back together with me?" I glared at him.My voice was as cold as ice as I spoke. "You caused my mother's death. How dare you say that? Do you really think things can go back to the way they were?"Ares' face went deathly pale. Despair churned in his eyes as the truth finally sank in. There was always going to be a gap between us that could never be crossed. How had it come to this? He had only wanted to repay Margaret for saving his life and to care for Lillian, who had lost her mother.Perhaps Lillian's pitiful act had fooled him, but deep down, he always knew he loved me. If he didn't, he never

In the days that followed, Vex took me to the Black Wolf pack. He told me about everything he'd been through over the years. After escaping the wasteland with enemies on his heels, he drifted from place to place, barely hanging on. Eventually, his grandfather sent people to search for him. They brought him back to the Black Wolf pack and raised him with great care. With his exceptional courage and ruthless determination, he eventually succeeded in claiming the Alpha King's throne."When I left back then, I swore I'd become strong enough to protect you all. But by the time I came back, it was already too late," he said.Vex stared into the bonfire outside the tent, speaking in a low and rough voice. He pressed his knuckles to his forehead, guilt weighing down his every word. "Evelyn, I failed to protect your mother."I shook my head, feeling my eyes burn with tears. "It wasn't your fault."…A week later, the Silvermoon pack sent the bond-breaking agreement, signed in Ares' crook

Vex carefully folded the burial certificate and handed it back to me. His expression was back to its usual cold look, though a hint of chill still lingered in his eyes."Evelyn, don't be afraid. From now on, you have me," he said, his voice low and unwavering.I took the certificate and slowly closed my fingers around it. Then, I turned my gaze to Lillian, who was still crumpled on the floor. "Lillian, did you enjoy your performance?" I asked calmly. Her lips trembled, and her face was drained of color. "That… That hide contract is fake! The two of you must have planned it together!"But the panic in her eyes had already betrayed her. The werewolves in the room looked at her with nothing but disdain and contempt.Ares' expression grew darker by the second. His fists were clenched so tightly that the knuckles turned white. "Lillian?"There was an edge to his voice, carrying a faint tremor he likely hadn't noticed himself.Lillian covered her face and began to cry, tears slippin

Lillian clapped a hand over her mouth, looking as if she'd been utterly scandalized. "Evelyn, how could you forge a burial certificate?"The moment the words left her lips, the other werewolves' expressions darkened. Their eyes on me turned sharper and more scrutinizing. The tension in Ares' shoulders eased, and a trace of relief crossed his face. He was just about to speak when a deep, commanding voice rang from the doorway. "Seven days ago, I was at that funeral myself. Are you saying I'm lying too?"The speaker was Vex Osborne, Alpha King of the Black Wolf pack.Moonlight streamed over his broad-shouldered frame, and his black cloak pooled on the floor. His stance was straight and unyielding, and his gaze was as cold as steel. He scanned the room before looking at me. For a brief moment, I thought I saw a flicker of emotion stir in their still depths."Alpha King!""Why are you here?"In an instant, Ares' imposing demeanor crumbled. He dropped to one knee, with the rest of t

Ares' expression darkened. His voice turned low and cutting as he said accusingly, "Are you using Celia's condition as a way to compete with Lillian for my attention?"Didn't I have someone watching over her? The Rogues were already gone. How could anything have happened to her?"These past few days, Ares had been off at Hot Spring Valley with Lillian, comforting her after she'd been "frightened".He hadn't returned to the Silvermoon pack at all, so of course, he didn't know Mom hadn't survived long enough to see a pack healer.Lillian cast me a timid glance, her voice barely more than a whisper. "Evelyn, please don't curse your mother like that."My throat tightened, and all that came out was a ragged whimper as tears streamed down my face.Lillian spoke again in a soft and deliberate tone. "Didn't the pack healer just say last time that your mother was the strongest werewolf in the pack?"My gaze turned sharp, and I glared at her deceitfully innocent face.Strongest werewolf?
