I turned to step down from the altar, but Kellan reached out and caught my wrist.

A second later, Kellan's confused, irritated voice came through the mind-link. "Evelyn, the ceremony isn't over. Where are you going?"

"Is there any part of this ceremony left for me?"

I looked at the empty tray in the priest's hands.

That was where the moonstone necklace meant for me had been.

For seven years, I had defended the Ashford border alongside the Blackcliff reinforcements.

The whole pack agreed that no Luna in history deserved that necklace more than I did.

But now it rested against another she-wolf's neck.

Kellan followed my gaze and softened his voice. "Evelyn, don't get the wrong idea. Serena just saved my life."

I scoffed. "The woman who saved your life by holding you while you slept?"

"Is sex all you ever think about?"

Kellan rubbed his forehead, his voice full of impatience. "Today's my inauguration. Can you not make a scene?"

Suddenly, it all seemed ridiculous.

He didn't even realize what he'd done wrong.

When I didn't say anything, Kellan looked down at me, his tone gentler. "Why do you care so much about a necklace? The whole pack knows you're my Luna."

His affectionate blue eyes were inches from mine, and the familiar scent of cedar lingered around me.

Deep in my chest, the mate bond hummed softly.

I was about to speak when Serena stepped between us.

"Kellan, I'll cherish this honor you've given me."

She slowly ran her fingertips over the necklace. "Does it look good on me?"

She was asking Kellan, but she was looking right at me.

"Take it off. You have no right to wear it."

My voice was completely flat.

Serena's smile froze, and tears quickly filled her eyes.

She bit her lip and reached up as if to undo the clasp.

"Don't." Kellan caught her wrist. "Keep it on. You can go."

Then he turned to me. "Evelyn, I'll make it up to you. I'll take you somewhere later."

He paused. "I've got a surprise for you."

The ceremony was still going on, and I didn't want to make things too ugly.

I watched Serena walk away and lowered my eyes. "Fine."

Before we left, I sent a message to my most trusted people and told them to dig into Serena.

Kellan held my hand the whole way to Moonshadow Valley in the north.

White moon lanterns floated one after another over the frozen lake at the bottom of the valley.

It looked like the Milky Way had spilled across the ice.

"You said you wanted to see the moon lanterns in Moonshadow Valley."

Kellan leaned down, his warm breath brushing my ear.

"I'll make every one of your wishes come true."

I looked at the lanterns, but my mind was on the report I was waiting for.

It came soon enough.

Kellan had been taking care of Serena all these years.

Three months ago, he'd brought her here and helped her open a clinic.

He even went to her clinic three times a week, like clockwork.

I could sense he was hesitating to answer, so I asked, "What does the Alpha do at her clinic?"

There was a pause before the next message came through: "Calming therapy. The two of them hold each other in the Moon Spring while Serena settles the Alpha's wolf."

My fingers went cold, and my breath caught.

That was when I caught the scent of white roses in the air.

I froze for a second.

I'd smelled it earlier. It was Serena's scent.

I slowly turned to Kellan. He was still wearing that tender expression.

"This is the surprise you planned for me?"

Kellan reached up to tuck a loose strand of hair behind my ear. "Of course. A gift just for you."

I stepped back, and his hand froze in midair.

"Serena's been here too, hasn't she?"

Something flickered across Kellan's face before he quickly hid it.

"She has. She came with me to set up the lanterns."

So I wasn't the first she-wolf to see this view with Kellan.

I waved my guard over.

"I like these lanterns. Pack them up. From now on, light them only when I'm here. Understood?"

The guard nodded and backed away.

Beside me, a flicker of embarrassment crossed Kellan's face before his expression slowly darkened.

  • My Alpha Shared a Bed with the Woman Who Saved Him, So I Walked Away   Chapter 10

I received a letter from the White Moon Pack begging for help. The letter bore the signatures of all seven elders, and its terms were even more blunt than I'd expected. They promised that if the Blackcliff Pack sent troops to drive back the vampires, the White Moon Pack would hand over half its territory. As if they were worried that wasn't enough, they'd added one more line at the end."Kellan has been removed as Alpha. The White Moon Pack pledges its loyalty to you."When I finished reading, it struck me as ironic. As if Kellan losing his title would give me any satisfaction. But whether he was Alpha or not had nothing to do with me.I had to focus on what was best for the Blackcliff Pack.If we let the vampires grow stronger, the Blackcliff Pack would be the next to face them.Besides, sending troops this time would win us half of White Moon's territory.I talked my father into it and set out with the Blackcliff forces.Three days later, the two armies met head-on.I stood on a high

Kellan's POV:The moment Kellan got back to the White Moon Pack, the Council of Elders stripped him of his title as Alpha.Without Evelyn's support as Luna, he didn't even have the right to remain in the council hall. When the wolf guards dragged him out of the hall, the jeers outside crashed over him."Look, isn't that the shortest-reigning Alpha in White Moon history?""He lost his Luna and the reinforcements over an Omega. Does he even have a brain?""You've ruined the White Moon Pack! You worthless piece of trash!"Every word was like a blade, slicing away the last of his dignity.Kellan kept his head down and hurried away, his fingernails digging into his palms. The shrill jeers rang in his ears, and the wolf inside him grew restless.A violent urge to kill, tangled with regret, rose from deep inside him.His wolf was on the edge of breaking loose.Without thinking, Kellan headed for Serena's clinic. But when he pushed open the door, the place was already half empty.Everything va

On the day of my mother's burial, every Blackcliff war banner was lowered to half-mast.I placed her favorite moon blade in the coffin. The blade had been mended, but the break was still clearly visible.A guard came up behind me and said quietly, "The White Moon Alpha has come to pay his respects and is asking to see you. Serena is with him."My father gazed at my mother for a long time and didn't look up."Take their weapons," I said in a low voice. "Then let them in."Blackcliff warriors stood in formation on both sides of the path to the tomb. When Kellan and Serena walked in, hundreds of long blades lowered in unison. The tension in the air made Serena flinch, and she instinctively grabbed Kellan's arm.Kellan pushed her away immediately. He walked up to the black coffin, stopped short, and looked at me."Evelyn...""If you're here to pay respects, stand over there," I said coldly. "Don't block the funeral procession."He staggered and licked his cracked lips."Come back with me.

[Kellan's POV]The pain from the shattered mate mark hadn't even faded when Kellan forced himself back to his feet.Evelyn had already turned away. The Blackcliff war banners snapped in the wind as the army escorted the black coffin and slowly withdrew north.Evelyn never looked back. She didn't spare him a single glance."Evelyn!"Kellan stumbled a few steps after her.Dozens of Blackcliff warriors blocked his path."Alpha Reed, that's far enough."Kellan kept his eyes locked on Evelyn as she moved farther away. "Out of my way."His only answer was the sound of blades being drawn in perfect unison.Dozens of swords came free of their sheaths at once and crossed before him, blocking his path.Kellan stopped short. All he could do was watch Evelyn and the black coffin disappear at the end of the road.He opened his mouth, but only ragged breaths came out.Evelyn had really left. She wasn't sulking. She wasn't waiting for someone to coax her back. She wasn't going to come home on her own

By the time Kellan found me, I'd already gathered all the Blackcliff reinforcements from the border."Evelyn!"Kellan leaped off his horse and rushed over to me in a few long strides. He grabbed my wrist, his voice urgent. "Where are you going?"I peeled his fingers off one by one. "Back to the Blackcliff Pack."Kellan looked past me at the long lines of soldiers behind me.Something seemed to click, and his face darkened."You're taking all the Blackcliff reinforcements?""Yes.""The Ashford line will be left wide open." He glared at me, unable to hide his anger. "Do you have any idea what that means?""Of course I do.""And you're still taking them?""Kellan," I said, looking up at him, "the Blackcliff warriors stayed because I used to believe you were worth it."Kellan's whole body tensed. He lost control and roared, "You can't leave me! And you can't pull the Blackcliff reinforcements out either!"The full force of his Alpha aura slammed down on me.But the next second, the Blackcl

Kellan's POV:Kellan stood there and watched Evelyn disappear into the thick woods.Without realizing it, he clenched his fists.Beside him, Serena clung tightly to his sleeve."Alpha, hurry. Leon is still in the stronghold."Her voice trembled, and the scent of white roses spread through the air.Kellan looked down at her pale face, and an inexplicable sense of unease stirred in his chest. He made the decision without thinking. This would be the last time. The last time he went against Evelyn's wishes for Serena's sake.Once he knew Leon was safe, his debt to Serena for saving his life would finally be repaid. He closed his eyes for a moment, then swung up onto his horse."Back to the stronghold!"As the horse turned, Kellan looked down the mountain road one more time.It was empty. There was no sign of Evelyn at all. When he got back to the stronghold, everything was perfectly fine. All three lines of defense were untouched, and Leon was in the inner keep playing a stone-tossing game
