Two Pink Lines

last update Fecha de publicación: 2026-09-22 23:28:09

I sat on the edge of my bathtub staring at two pink lines that didn’t waver no matter how many times I blinked at them.

Six weeks of him barely looking at me. Six weeks of clipped hallway greetings and locked office doors and a silence that felt like punishment, though I still don’t know if he was getting punished too.

He started leaving before breakfast and coming home after everyone else was asleep, and the only time I’d caught him in the kitchen at midnight, he’d looked at me like I was something he needed very far away from himself.

I sat on that bathroom floor for almost an hour, pressed one hand flat against my stomach, trying to reconcile the two lines with the six weeks of nothing that had come before them.

By the time I made the appointment two days later, deep down I already knew what the doctor was going to tell me, even though I wished with all my heart that it wasn’t true, but I knew it, I felt it. I sat in the waiting room of the clinic, flipping through a magazine I didn’t read a single word of.

“Congratulations,” the nurse said, reading off the chart. “You’re six weeks along.”

I thanked her, and went out immediately.

I sat in my car in the clinic parking lot afterward for almost thirty minutes, with my hands resting on the wheel, staring straight ahead at nothing, trying to figure out how I was supposed to walk back into that house and act like my entire life hadn’t just rearranged itself around one small, undeniable fact.

I told myself I’d tell him when the moment was right. I didn’t know yet that the moment was never going to come the way I imagined it.

—

It was almost midnight when I found him standing alone on the back terrace, staring out at the tree line like it owed him an answer to a question he hadn’t asked out loud.

“You’ve been avoiding me,” I said, stepping out into the cold air.

“I’ve been trying to do the right thing.” He didn’t turn around. “That’s not the same as avoiding you, Nadia, even if they look identical from where you’re standing.”

“Funny. From here they look exactly the same.”

He finally turned, and whatever composure he’d built cracked the second his eyes landed on me. “You shouldn’t be out here. It’s freezing.”

“Then stop standing out here like you’re waiting for me to come find you.”

Something raw moved behind his eyes. He set the glass down slowly on the stone railing, and crossed the space between us until there wasn’t any left.

“I think about that night constantly,” he said, quiet, like the confession cost him something physical. “I have spent six weeks telling myself it was a mistake, that letting it happen again would only make everything worse, and none of it has stopped me from wanting to do it again every single time I see you.”

“Then why keep pretending you don’t?”

“Because wanting something doesn’t make it something I’m allowed to keep.”

He reached up anyway, with his cold fingers brushing my jaw, tilting my face toward his, and for a long moment neither of us moved, both of us caught in the same impossible gravity that had pulled us together in that cellar. I thought he might kiss me. I thought I might let him.

He did, slowly at first, like he was giving me every chance to pull away before he lost the ability to stop himself. I didn’t. My hands found the front of his shirt and he made a low sound against my mouth.

His arm closed around my waist to pull me flush against him, and I could feel the kiss deepening into something hungrier, more desperate, like several weeks of denial finally breaking loose all at once.

I felt every part of him wanting more. I felt the exact moment he remembered why he couldn’t let himself have it.

He pulled back first, with his forehead dropping to mine, and we were both breathing hard in the cold air, his hand was still cradling my jaw like he couldn’t quite make himself let go yet.

“I can’t,” he said, voice rough. “Not because I don’t want to. Because if I start again, I don’t think either of us walks away from it this time, and there are things happening that I can’t explain to you yet. Things I need to fix before I let myself have anything else I want.”

“What things?”

He didn’t answer. He just pressed one more kiss to my forehead, and walked back into the house without looking back, leaving me standing alone on that terrace with my lips still burning and the truth sitting silent in my chest.

I didn’t know, standing there in the cold, that I’d just had the last honest moment I was ever going to get with him in that house.

—

There were flowers in the front hall when I came down in the morning. Dozens of white roses properly arranged in a crystal vase.

“Nadia, sweetheart, you’re just in time,” Diane called from the sitting room, her voice was bright in a way that made my stomach drop before I even rounded the corner. “Come see the wonderful news.”

I stepped into the room and every ounce of air left my lungs.

Kade stood near the fireplace with his arm around a woman I’d never seen. She’s elegant, composed, has dark hair that swept into a perfect chignon, a diamond catching the firelight every time she gestured, which she did often. He wasn’t looking at me. He was looking at the ring on her finger.

“This is Selene,” Diane said. “The pack council finalized the match this morning. Isn’t it wonderful? Her family’s territory borders ours to the west. It’s exactly the kind of alliance your brother’s father would have wanted.”

Selene turned that same polished smile toward me, extending a hand I had no choice but to shake. “You must be the stepsister. Kade’s told me almost nothing about you, actually. Is that terrible of him?”

“He can be like that. Keeps everything to himself,” I heard myself say. “Well, he has a wife now, should do good.”

“Well, on the bright side we get to relate and I’ll know directly from the source,” she said, and we both smiled, and for a second, just a second, I was very happy for her.

Kade’s jaw tightened at that, the only sign he’d even registered I was in the room, but he still didn’t look at me. Not once. Not even the way he had last night — briefly, and honestly.

“Nadia,” Diane pressed gently, when the silence stretched a beat too long. “Aren’t you going to congratulate your brother?”

I honestly don’t remember what I said. Something about congratulations, probably, or that I’m genuinely happy for them and I wish them well, and how he’s a good person and she should make sure to treat him well. I tried my best to sound normal, enough that nobody in the room seemed to notice the ground had opened up underneath me.

I remember my dad looking proud, remember my legs carrying me out of the living room like they belonged to someone with more composure than I actually had left in me, while behind me Diane called out cheerfully that they’d save me a slice of cake for later.

I made it all the way to my room before the tears finally broke through, and then I sat on the edge of my bed with one hand pressed against my stomach and let out a single broken, humorless laugh, because of course. Of course a man who could disappear on his own family for months without a word could disappear on me completely in a single sentence, engagement ring and perfect fiancée included, like I’d never happened at all.

I sat there for a long time after the tears stopped, staring at nothing, running through the conversation on a loop, searching his face in my memory for even one flicker of something — regret, hesitation, anything — and finding nothing there at all. It was almost worse than if he’d been cruel to my face. Cruelty at least would have meant he still saw me as something worth being cruel to.

This was different. This was a man erasing me in real time, in front of an audience, with a stranger’s hand resting near his own like it had always belonged there.

I thought about the appointment card still folded in my jacket pocket, the ultrasound date circled in blue pen, and wondered how many more secrets I was going to end up carrying alone in this house before someone finally noticed I was drowning in them.

Some nights, in the weeks that followed, a thought crept in that I never let myself finish out loud — whether letting go of this before it truly started would be the kinder thing, for both of us. I didn’t know if it was the right answer. I wasn’t even sure I trusted myself to recognize right anymore, not after everything. But some nights, it was the only question my mind would let me ask.

I could still hear laughter downstairs. Diane’s, bright and unknowing. A toast being made. Glasses clinking together in celebration of a future that had no room in it for me or for the child neither of them knew I was carrying.

I didn’t go back down for the cake.

  • My Alpha Stepbrother Wants Me Back   Seven Years Later (Face to face)

KADE’S POVSeven years.Seven years since Nadia disappeared without a single word, and I still hadn’t found a version of myself that didn’t check every room for her the second I walked into it. Restaurants. Airports. Once, absurdly, a grocery store three states away, because a woman with her exact walk had turned down the cereal aisle and my whole chest had seized before I even caught up to my own feet.I told myself, at the time, that pushing her toward hatred was some kind of mercy. That if I was cold enough, cruel enough, distant enough, she’d forget me faster and go build a life that didn’t have a werewolf Alpha wrecking it from the inside out. I told myself a lot of things, back then, that let me sleep at night. It was the worst lie I ever told myself, and I’ve had seven years to catalogue the competition.I married Selene eight months after Nadia vanished. It lasted less than two years. Selene wanted an Alpha who could actually love her, and by the time she asked me for that, pl

  • My Alpha Stepbrother Wants Me Back   End of Us

I stayed for three more days after the engagement announcement, mostly because leaving suddenly would have raised questions I wasn’t ready to answer, and partly because some stubborn, humiliated part of me kept waiting for him to knock on my door and take it all back.He never did.I watched the house rearrange itself around Selene instead, with Diane looping her into wedding talk over breakfast, and my father asking polite questions about her family’s territory like this was just another ordinary alliance instead of the thing that had quietly ended something I’d never gotten the chance to name out loud. And then he was there too. Kade sat through all of it with the same composed distance he’d worn for six weeks, except now it had a fiancée attached to it, official and permanent in a way that made the terrace kiss feel almost like something I’d imagined. He found me on the second day, alone in the upstairs hallway, and for one unguarded second I thought he might finally say something

  • My Alpha Stepbrother Wants Me Back   His Forbidden Touch

He didn't walk out of the library. Neither did I.For a long moment we just stood there, his hand was still resting against my jaw, and we were both breathing like we'd run miles instead of standing perfectly still. Then something in him broke loose all at once, and his mouth was on mine before either of us decided it should be, one hand sliding into my hair while the other gripped my waist like he needed something to hold onto.I kissed him back without a single thought toward stopping. He walked me backward until my spine hit the edge of the heavy oak desk, lifting me onto it without breaking the kiss, settling himself between my knees like he belonged there. His mouth moved from my lips to my jaw to the sensitive skin below my ear, teeth scraping just hard enough to make me gasp, and I heard him mutter something low and rough against my throat that might have been my name, might have been a curse, might have been both."Tell me to stop," he said, even as his hands were already work

  • My Alpha Stepbrother Wants Me Back   My Forbidden Mate

NADIA'S POVI was nineteen the night the storm knocked out half the county's power grid and trapped me in a cellar with the one person in that house who'd spent three years pretending I didn't exist.Kade wasn't even supposed to be home. He'd been called back that afternoon, some border skirmish rumor rippling through pack channels, rogue scouts spotted too close to our territory line, and by the time the sirens went off for the shelter drill, he was the one hauling me down the cellar stairs by the wrist instead of my dad, because my dad and Diane were three streets over at a neighbor's, and the storm hit faster than anyone predicted."Move," he said, shoving the door shut behind us as the house groaned above our heads.I'd never been alone with him for longer than the time it took to pass the salt at dinner. Now I was watching him drag a shelving unit in front of the door with one arm, like it weighed nothing, his jaw tight with something that wasn't just concentration."Is it actual
