LOGINChapter 6
Aria's POV I grabbed my bag and stormed up the stairs with my whole body shaking. I shoved through the door and almost crashed into a woman standing right outside. Dark hair. Tight bun. Sharp‚ watchful eyes that flicked from my flushed face to the closed door behind me and back again. "Sorry‚" I muttered. "No problem." She smiled but it didn't reach her eyes. "I'm Maren Vale. Professor Stone's TA. And you are?" "Aria Brown." "Aria." She repeated it slowly‚ as if committing it to memory. "Everything okay in there? You seem flustered." "Enrollment issue. All sorted." "Mm." She glanced at the closed door one more time. "Well‚ if you ever need anything‚ my office hours are on the syllabus." I walked away without responding and felt her eyes follow me all the way down the hall. Jace was waiting in the cafeteria with two coffees just like he promised. I dropped into the seat across from him and he slid one over. "You survived. What'd he want?" "Registration problem. Nothing interesting." "You sure?" "Definitely." "Well that's a relief. For a second I thought you already had beef with a professor on day one." He laughed and leaned back. "So… I've been thinking. Me and you‚ Friday night. What do you say?" "I'll think about it." "That's not a no. I'm counting that as a win." I wrapped my hands around the coffee and forced myself to breathe. Jace was easy to be around. Uncomplicated. I needed uncomplicated right now. "Aria!" I looked up and Silvia was walking toward us with her bag over one shoulder and her hair piled on top of her head in a messy bun. She looked like she'd been running between buildings‚ which knowing her schedule‚ she probably had. "I've been looking for you everywhere‚" she said‚ dropping into the chair next to me. "My Pack Psychology lecture got moved to this building so now I have like a thirty-minute gap and I'm starving and—" She stopped. Looked at Jace. Looked at me. Looked back at Jace. "Hi. Who are you?" Jace smiled. "Jace Thornton." Silvia looked at me with raised eyebrows that very clearly said “explain”. "Jace is in my Constitutional Pack Law class‚" I said. "Jace‚ this is Silvia. My best friend." "Best friend and emotional support system‚" Silvia corrected‚ reaching across the table to shake his hand. "Nice to meet you‚ Jace Thornton. How's Professor Stone? I've heard horror stories." "Cold as shit‚" Jace said. "But Aria here got a private audience with him after class so maybe she can put in a good word for the rest of us." Silvia turned to me. "Private audience?" "Enrollment issue‚" I said quickly. "It was nothing." Silvia stared at me for a second too long. She knew me better than anyone and even though she didn't know about what happened between me and Kael‚ she knew things at home had been tense since the cheating blowout. I could tell she was clocking the tightness in my jaw and the way my hands were gripping the coffee cup a little too hard. But she didn't push. Not in front of Jace. "Okay‚" she said lightly. Then she stole my coffee and took a long sip. "So what are we talking about?" "I was asking Aria out‚" Jace said casually. Silvia nearly choked. "On day one? Bold move." "I'm a bold guy." "She said no‚ didn't she?" "She said she'd think about it." "That's Aria for no." Silvia grinned at him. "Don't take it personally." "I never do." They started talking and I sat there letting their conversation wash over me while my heart rate slowly came back down from wherever Kael had sent it. Silvia was already grilling Jace about his major and his pack and whether he had a criminal record‚ and Jace was handling it with the kind of easy charm that made it obvious he'd talked his way out of plenty of situations before. They didn't know each other five minutes ago and they were already bickering like siblings. Under normal circumstances I would have loved this. My best friend and my new classmate getting along. Easy. Simple. Fun. But nothing about my life was simple anymore. Because just minutes ago‚ I had almost kissed my stepfather again. And this time‚ there was no mask to hide behind.Chapter 8Aria's POVI couldn't sleep.I tried for three hours. Tossed and turned until my sheets were tangled around my legs and my pillow was warm on both sides. Every time I closed my eyes I saw my mom's hand on his thigh and then my brain replaced it with my hand and then I was back at The Veil with his body on top of mine and his mouth between my legs and I had to shove my face into the pillow to stop the sound that crawled up my throat.By midnight I gave up.I got out of bed wearing the red silk nightgown I'd thrown on earlier‚ thin straps‚ mid-thigh length‚ nothing underneath because I hadn't planned on leaving my room. I wasn't trying to look good. I just needed water and maybe some air and five minutes where my brain wasn't eating itself alive. The house was dark and quiet as I made my way downstairs. The only light came from the kitchen‚ a dim glow from the light above the stove that someone always left on at night.I walked in and stopped dead.Kael was leaning against the
Chapter 7Aria's POVMy mom cornered me in my bedroom while I was changing out of my university clothes."I've made a decision‚" she said‚ sitting on the edge of my bed like she was about to deliver good news. "I'm going to fix things with Kael."I pulled my shirt over my head and kept my back to her so she wouldn't see my face. "Fix things how?""By being a better wife. By showing him that what happened was a mistake and that I'm still committed to this marriage." She smoothed down my bedsheet like she was practicing being domestic. "I know things have been tense‚ baby. But every marriage goes through rough patches. Your stepfather is a good man. I just need to remind him why he chose me."I wanted to laugh. I wanted to scream. Instead I grabbed a clean top and said‚ "That's great‚ Mom.""You don't sound like you mean that.""I do. I'm just tired."She stood up and kissed the side of my head. "Dinner's at seven. I'm making his favorite. Wear something nice."She left and I stood ther

Chapter 5Aria's POVOne week since The Veil and the mansion was a warzone of silence. My mom slept in the guest room. Kael locked himself in his study every night. They passed each other like strangers and I floated between them pretending I wasn't falling apart because I could still feel my stepfather's hands on my body every time I closed my eyes.He hadn't looked at me once all week. Or better still‚ he avoided me entirely. Refused to eat dinner with us. Was always locked up in his study as if staying in the same room as me was something he couldn't survive. Now it was Monday and I was sitting in a lecture hall staring at a syllabus that had just ruined my entire life.Constitutional Pack Law. Professor Kael Stone."Hey." The guy next to me leaned over. Sandy hair‚ green eyes‚ pretty-boy grin. "I'm Jace. Jace Thornton. And you look like you're about to throw up.""Aria Brown. And I might.""That bad already? Class hasn't even started.""Trust me‚ it's worse than you think.""Well‚
Chapter 4Aria's POV"What the FUCK!" he roared as he jerked upright‚ grabbing my waist and shoving me off him.I stumbled off the bed and hit the wall while my thighs were still shaking. He stood on the other side of the room‚ breathing hard‚ staring at me as if he had just seen a ghost.Well I fucking have‚ cause the man I'd just been fucking was no other person than my Alpha stepfather. My mother's husband.Kael Stone. And my fucking professor!"Aria?!" he shouted‚ his eyes wide with horror as he grabbed a pillow and held it in front of himself."Kael?!" I shouted back‚ crossing my arms over my chest as if that would undo the last hour of what we'd just done.We stared at each other across the room. Both of us naked. Both of us breathing hard. Both of us dripping with sweat and each other's cum. The bass was still thumping through the walls as if the rest of the club had no idea that the world had just ended inside this VIP room."What the fuck are you doing here?!" he demanded."W
Chapter 3Aria's POVHe lifted me off his lap gently and stood up. He was tall. Really tall. He towered over me even in my heels‚ and up close the breadth of his shoulders and the way his suit stretched across his chest made my mouth water. He pulled out a black card‚ walked to the bar‚ and said something to the bartender who nodded and handed him a key.He came back and took my hand. His palm was warm and rough against mine as he led me through the crowd toward the back of the club where the VIP rooms were. The hallway was dimmer here‚ the music muffled‚ and with every step my heart was pounding harder. He unlocked the door and we stepped inside. The room was simple. A large bed with dark sheets‚ dim lighting‚ a lock on the door. He closed it behind us and turned the lock‚ and the click of it echoed in the quiet. We stood there facing each other for a moment. Two strangers in masks in a locked room with nothing between us but the decision we'd already made."Last chance to walk away
