Chapter 4

作者: Jasmine Flower
The next morning, I began packing.

Two suitcases of clothes. Several professional textbooks. The jewelry box my mother had left me.

A handwritten reminder sheet still hung on the refrigerator. Lucas needed stomach medicine before council meetings. Caleb had to replace part of his patrol gear. Jace’s old injury was due for examination the following week.

The final note read: Mia cannot drink cold milk.

A month earlier, Lucas had asked me to add it. She had only recently returned to the pack, he said. I should take better care of her.

I pulled down the sheet and dropped it into the trash.

My phone kept lighting up. Caleb wanted the housing arrangements. Jace could not find his medical report. Mia asked if I would accompany her to collect her travel permit.

I sorted their documents into separate folders and placed them in the second drawer of the study.

Then I sent one reply.

Your papers are in the second drawer. Keep track of them yourselves from now on.

I closed my suitcases.

The mate ring I had removed went back into its original box. I left it on the dining table beside the apartment key. My mother’s necklace, my identification, and my car keys went into my carry-on bag.

I left the shared photo album, disabled location sharing, and revoked their access to my private training archive.

When I opened our five-person chat for the last time, they were discussing that evening’s barbecue. Mia wanted the restaurant at the eastern foot of the mountain. Caleb complained that it was too far.

Lucas replied, It’s fine. Erin can drive and pick us up.

Jace sent a laughing emoji. Good thing our personal manager is useful.

I looked at the words for several seconds, then left the group.

I deleted Caleb, Jace, and Mia from my contacts one by one.

I saved Lucas for last.

At four in the afternoon, a Royal Court vehicle stopped below the apartment. A female officer checked my identification and handed me the approval for my pack-registration transfer.

“Everything is complete. With the Court’s acceptance order, you may cross the border directly.”

I placed the papers in my bag.

“Once you enter the training base, you may not contact anyone outside for six months,” she reminded me. “Is there anyone you still need to say goodbye to?”

I looked back at the apartment.

The ring box on the table remained open. Lucas would see it the moment he returned.

“No.”

I closed the door and carried my luggage downstairs.

As we crossed the square, the wisteria trellis from yesterday’s photograph passed outside the window. Beyond it lay the mountain path where the four of us had run as children.

I looked away. I did not ask the driver to stop.

The border marker came into view just as my phone rang.

Lucas.

I answered.

“Why did you leave the group? Why is your location turned off?” He paused, and his voice softened a little. “I asked about it. You can still transfer into the Western Camp. Turn your location back on, and I’ll send someone to get you.”

He still believed I was waiting for him to arrange a way for me to follow.

“Lucas, the ring is on the dining table.”

Silence.

“What is that supposed to mean?”

“The key is there too. Your documents are in the study. I’ve taken all my things.”

“Erin, where are you?”

“At the pack border.”

His breathing sharpened. “What are you doing there? We agreed to go West together.”

“You agreed among yourselves. I didn’t.”

“Come back first,” he interrupted. “We’ll discuss this in person.”

“I’m reporting to the Royal Court.”

“The Royal Court?” He sounded as if the words made no sense. “Reporting for what? When did you apply? Why didn’t you tell me?”

I did not answer.

Over the past forty-eight hours, I had asked them again and again where they had chosen to go. I no longer wanted to justify my own choice to him.

The vehicle stopped at the border checkpoint. A guard accepted the officer’s documents and examined the Royal Court seal.

Lucas heard their voices. His own tightened at once. “You’re truly leaving the pack?”

“Yes.”

“Think carefully, Erin. You are my fated mate. No matter where you go, that won’t change.”

I looked down at my bare finger.

He had never marked me. I still had the right to reject the bond aloud. I did not need his permission.

The guard returned the papers and raised the barrier.

I sat straighter.

“Lucas, I’m ending it now.”

“What did you say?”

“I, Erin, under the witness of the Moon Goddess, reject Alpha Lucas as my fated mate.”

As the final word left my mouth, the vehicle crossed the boundary.

Agony tore through my chest. My fingers closed around the phone as the familiar mate bond pulled taut inside me—then snapped.

Lucas gasped in pain on the other end.

“Erin—stop!”

One year later, I was formally appointed to the Royal Court Command Center. My new quarters were not large, but they had a window facing south.I adopted a cat—a calico I found outside the base wall.Ethan said her temperament resembled mine. Most of the time she was quiet, but if someone pushed her too far, one swipe could draw blood.I named her Clover.I no longer needed a perfect ending.A little luck that belonged entirely to me was enough.Caleb and Jace emailed me later. They had completed their first year at the Western Camp. Caleb had learned to manage accounts and schedules. Jace no longer waited for someone else to remind him about examinations for his old injury. They did not ask me to return. At the end of the email, they wrote only one sentence. We were bastards for treating everything you did as something we were entitled to.I did not reply. But I no longer hated them.Lucas suspended his Alpha-heir training for six months. His mother said he spent most of his time in t

After the ceremony, Lucas’s mother waited outside the reception room. She held the moonstone bracelet in both hands, her smile strained.“Erin, I made a foolish decision. Mia returned the bracelet. It was always meant for you.”She reached for my wrist.I stepped back. “I don’t want it.”“You’re still angry?” She sighed. “You have always taken things too deeply. Lucas knows he was wrong. Give him a chance. You cannot discard more than twenty years as if they meant nothing.”I looked at the bracelet. As a child, I had dreamed about it more than once. I imagined her fastening it around my wrist and smiling as she called me her future Luna.Only after it had rested on Mia’s arm did I understand that I had never wanted a piece of jewelry.I wanted someone to stand before the entire pack and say, without hesitation, that my place belonged only to me.Lucas’s mother could not give me that certainty.Neither could Lucas.“Keep it,” I said. “Whoever you give it to next has nothing to do with m

When the six-month closed-training period ended, my former pack invited me back for its annual commendation ceremony. The project I had joined remained classified. My public introduction contained only one line.Member of the Royal Court Direct Commander Program.Ethan and two other Court officers accompanied me.At the entrance to the council hall, the elder responsible for academy affairs came out to welcome us personally.“Erin, we have finally managed to bring you home.”“There’s no need to be so formal, Elder.”“There certainly is.” He lowered his voice. “The border emergency system your team designed has passed final inspection. You brought great honor to the pack.”As he finished speaking, I saw Lucas. He stood below the steps and looked thinner than before. Caleb and Jace were beside him.The three of them watched me in silence. At last, Caleb forced a crooked smile. “You’re impressive now, Erin.”I nodded. “I’m doing all right.”Jace held out a document envelope. “It contains

Without me, Lucas, Caleb, Jace, and Mia still went to the Western Camp.Life there was not as easy as they had expected. No one consolidated their housing paperwork, so the quiet cottage they wanted was reserved by another team. The four of them had to stay in a hotel outside camp and commute almost two hours every day.For the first time, Caleb prepared his own registration forms. At two in the morning, after discovering that he had omitted two equipment certificates, he pushed his laptop away.“How did Erin finish all this?”Jace was checking the documents for his old injury and did not look up. “Stop talking about her.”“I said one thing.”“You’ve said her name eight times today.”Lucas sat on the balcony, calling me again. No answer.Since the mate bond broke, he often woke abruptly in the middle of the night. No matter how far apart we had once been, he could sense that I existed somewhere in the world. Now there was only emptiness.Mia placed a glass of water beside him. “Lucas,

On my seventh day at the Royal Court base, I faced my first assessment.Twelve candidates formed a temporary unit. We had six hours to complete a border-defense exercise: plan patrol routes, identify gaps that rogue wolves might use to enter the territory, and guide a supply convoy safely into a mountain valley after communications failed. Our team leader, Ethan Cole, scanned the risk assessment I had prepared. His eyebrows rose. “Twenty-seven contingency plans?”“For unexpected situations.”“This is the first assessment, not the final defense of the realm.”Someone nearby laughed. “You prepared as if an entire pack might have to evacuate overnight.”My fingers paused.I had heard versions of that joke too many times. Lucas used to say that I planned every detail and exhausted myself for no reason.I closed the file. “Fine. We’ll begin with the standard plan.”Two hours later, the main communication channel went dead. The examiners remotely disabled the drones surveying our route. Then

Once the vehicle had crossed the border, I switched off my phone and placed it inside the security pouch. The Royal Court officer sealed it. “No private contact with the outside world for six months.”“Understood.”In the rearview mirror, the territory where I had spent more than twenty years grew smaller and smaller. I watched until it vanished completely, then turned away. When the call ended, Lucas was still standing outside the barbecue restaurant. The pain of the broken mate bond ripped through his chest. He made a strangled sound, bent over against the wall, and dropped his phone onto the pavement.Caleb’s expression changed. “Lucas, what happened?”Lucas did not answer. He pressed a hand over his heart, cold sweat appearing across his forehead. The pull that had existed since the Moon Goddess revealed us as fated mates was gone.Completely gone.Nothing remained.Jace understood first. “Erin rejected the bond?”Lucas snatched up his phone and called me again. It was turned off.
