Chapter 2

Author: Serein M
Then I saw it. Resting against her cleavage was a crescent wolf-fang pendant. It was set in white gold.

The Sterling family heirloom. Passed down only to Lunas.

A month ago, Caleb took it from me. He claimed he was taking it to the pack’s sacred grounds to be blessed by the Healer under the full moon. He said it would strengthen our mate bond.

What a freaking joke.

At the time, I was touched by the love in his eyes. I thought it meant something special. I thought it showed how much he valued our bond.

I never thought he’d turn around and hang our Luna heirloom around his mistress's neck.

Plus, as the pool's hot water washed away her cheap, heavy perfume...

My sharp wolf senses finally caught the scent buried underneath.

Caleb’s unique Alpha scent—pine woods and crisp winter air—was wrapped tightly all around her. He had heavily scent-marked her.

If we hadn't bumped into her today, I'd still be in the dark. I'd still be waiting like an idiot for him to bring back my "blessed" pendant.

I had no idea he was out here giving away Luna privileges to some other girl.

The angrier I got, the colder my voice became.

I completely popped her smug little bubble. "What's your last name? Because Caleb's legal mate is a Sterling.

"And surprise—she looks nothing like you. You’re just his dirty little secret, honey. A bed-warmer. Yet here you are, screaming and acting so proud. You have absolutely no shame.

"Go ahead. Mind-link Caleb right now. I'd love to see how he plans to handle us."

Tessa flinched. The insult hit her pride like a physical blow.

Her voice turned shrill. "Love doesn't care who came first. So what if she's his mate? The one he doesn't love is the real trash. My Alpha is coming to see me today. I’ll make him come right now. Just you wait."

She grabbed her phone and dialed. Her voice instantly turned sickeningly sweet. "Caleb, baby, when are you getting here?

"I'm at the healing pool. Two low-rank bitches are bullying me. I'm so scared. Come protect me, please?

"Also, I want this pool all to myself from now on. I learned some fun new tricks in the water... just for you."

She hung up, glowing like she just won Alpha of the year. "He’ll be here in thirty minutes. You're dead. He knows exactly how to deal with trash like you."

I was holding back vomit. Caleb had looked me in the eyes and sworn he'd never hurt me—and behind my back, he was screwing this piece of trash.

Rowena saw my face and instantly understood. She clenched her jaw. "Caleb. He’s exactly like his cheating bastard of a father. Everything I gave him—I can take back."

She hated mate-traitors more than anything. Years ago, Caleb’s dad ran off with an Omega. Rowena dumped him on the spot. She crushed the rebellion with an iron fist as Luna, raised Caleb alone, and built her own pack empire.

And now? The son she raised had stooped just as low. He was a complete disappointment.

Rowena still controlled the pack's Council of Elders.

Yes, she let Caleb manage a few territories.

But the real power? She still held it.

As for Caleb and me, we were a political match. I wasn’t some nobody, either.

I couldn't wait to hear Caleb try to lie his way out of this one.

Right then, I noticed something was wrong—Rowena’s face was ghost pale.

The silver poison was spreading, attacking her damaged wolf. Her lungs were failing. Every breath sounded like tearing paper.

I grabbed her and guided her toward the ladder, trying to get her out.

But Tessa gave a hand signal.

Bruno jumped to the edge. He kicked Rowena square in the chest just as she was halfway up.

She crashed back into the freezing water. I scrambled wildly to pull her up again.

Tessa stood there laughing. "You two look like drowning hairless dogs. I thought you 'liked' the water? Stay in it!"

She turned to Bruno. "Don't let them out until my mate gets here."

Bruno nodded like a loyal mutt. "You got it, Tessa. I’ll keep them down. Just put in a good word for me with the Alpha."

No matter how many times we tried to climb out, Bruno kicked us right back in.

We were running out of strength. Rowena clutched her chest, gasping for air. She was too weak to speak.

I held her up and screamed at the edge, panic tearing through me. "Are you trying to kill her? My mother-in-law's wolf is damaged! Her lungs are failing! She needs her antidote! Let us out right now, or when Caleb gets here, you'll pay for this!"

Bruno hesitated. He looked at Tessa.

She just snorted. "You old hags are so dramatic. Damaged wolf? You had plenty of fight in you a second ago."

Then she waved her hand at him. "Pour in that bottle of purified wolfsbane extract. Let's see how long she can fake it."

Built like a god of war, and entirely focused on the pack. When Caleb finally came storming back and found out Rowena had completely stripped his inheritance, he lost his mind.He kept muttering to himself, convinced it was a mistake. He was her only biological son—how could she give his birthright to an outsider? He just couldn't accept reality. But I knew exactly why—no one hated betrayal more than Rowena.Caleb watched his father destroy his mother, and then he turned around and did the exact same thing. He begged. He cried. But Rowena shut him out completely. She packed her bags and lef

Right then, a scream echoed from the hallway. "Get your hands off me! My mate is Alpha Caleb Sterling!"Two massive Pack Enforcers dragged Tessa into the room. They threw her onto the floor. "Found her lurking in the corridor, Luna. Eavesdropping."Tessa's eyes went wide. She instantly squeezed out fake tears. "Caleb! I just came to apologize to your mom..."Caleb roared, his eyes glowing red with his Alpha aura. "Didn't you hear her? Let her go!"But the Enforcers didn't even blink. They only answered to Rowena. She gave a slight nod.Tessa scrambled behind Caleb, clinging to his shirt. "They scared me to death."Then she shot Rowena a pitiful look. "I'm so sorry about yesterday. I really didn't know you were Caleb's mom."Rowena didn't even look at her. "Save your apologies. A few weeks in the silver-lined cells will teach you respect."Caleb's face paled. "Mom, what are you doing?"He whipped around to glare at me. "Valerie, did you put her up to this? I told you—you are the only on

I checked the time. Caleb should have dropped her off and been on his way back by now.I called him. It rang twice before someone answered. But it wasn't Caleb."Valerie Sterling," Tessa's smug voice echoed through the speaker. "Still clinging, huh? You really don't know when to quit."Rowena waved her hand from the hospital bed. I put it on speaker."Put Caleb on the phone," I said coldly. "It's an emergency."Tessa giggled. "He's in the shower. We just had a little fun. He can't get enough of me. Honestly, just give up. You can't compete."I gritted my teeth. "One last time—put him on the phone. His mother needs him.""Ugh, fine. Let me go ask him."I heard her yell in the background, "Caleb, baby! It's Valerie! Do you want to talk to her?"Caleb paused. He must have thought the phone was muted. "Ignore her. Tell her I'll be there soon."Tessa's voice turned breathy and seductive. "Leaving already? You're not going to finish what we started on the counter?"I heard a heavy thud, fol

Caleb immediately stepped in front of Tessa, shielding her from me. "Valerie, Tessa is just a young Omega. Don't be so vindictive. I'll send her away right now. I promise you'll never see her again."I looked at him, and the very last shred of love I had for him vanished. I laughed. A cold, hollow sound. "Vindictive? You are so generous, Caleb. The woman your little pet almost murdered with wolfsbane today was your own mother."Tessa shrieked from behind him. "That's your fault! If you hadn't tricked me about who she was, I never would have touched her!"It's on you! You tried to kill his mom just to frame me! You are sick and twisted!"She was actually trying to pin this on me. The idiot couldn't even connect the simplest dots. I was so mad I actually laughed.I was done wasting my breath on her. "I told you who she was from the beginning. You were just too stupid to understand. This is attempted murder of a former Luna. I'm calling the Pack Enforcers."I grabbed my phone, but before

She threw herself into his arms, pointing her bleeding face at him like the biggest victim in the world. "Caleb, what took you so long? These two low-rank bitches bullied me so badly."She pouted. "Look. That bitch scratched my face. You have to handle them for me. Plus, you owe me—you need to stay in bed with me for a whole week to make up for this."Caleb pulled her close with pure heartache. He instantly released his Alpha aura, his voice thick with rage. "Who dared touch you? I'll kill them. Don't worry, baby—I cleared a whole week just for you. I'm all yours."This was the man who had just brutally cut off our mind-link.This was the man who held me tight last night, complaining about having to do "territory inspections" for a week, swearing he’d miss me.All lies. I wanted to burn a hole through her with my eyes.I was done holding back. "She is Caleb's own mother!" I yelled. "If anything happens to her, Caleb will tear you apart when he gets here!"Tessa burst out laughing—loud and shrill. "Wow. You'll make up anything. I heard you loud and clear. You said she was your mother-in-law. How is she suddenly Caleb's mother? You suck at lying!"She sneered. "You ruined my mood. I need to teach you a lesson. Next time you go out, watch who you're messing with."Rowena was shaking uncontrollably in my arms, her breath incredibly faint. Her airways were shutting down completely. She needed her medicine. Right now. Or her wolf spirit would fade away completely. My eyes burned. I screamed as loud as I could, "Help! Please—someone help us! She's dying! Call the Healer!"The massive pool deck was empty and dead silent. Nobody came.Even Bruno started to panic. "Tessa, what if—"She cut him off coldly. "Don't panic. Old bones are tougher than they look.
