Chapter 4

Author: Serein M
I wanted to burn a hole through her with my eyes.

I was done holding back. "She is Caleb's own mother!" I yelled. "If anything happens to her, Caleb will tear you apart when he gets here!"

Tessa burst out laughing—loud and shrill. "Wow. You'll make up anything. I heard you loud and clear. You said she was your mother-in-law. How is she suddenly Caleb's mother? You suck at lying!"

She sneered. "You ruined my mood. I need to teach you a lesson. Next time you go out, watch who you're messing with."

Rowena was shaking uncontrollably in my arms, her breath incredibly faint. Her airways were shutting down completely.

She needed her medicine. Right now. Or her wolf spirit would fade away completely.

My eyes burned. I screamed as loud as I could, "Help! Please—someone help us! She's dying! Call the Healer!"

The massive pool deck was empty and dead silent. Nobody came.

Even Bruno started to panic. "Tessa, what if—"

She cut him off coldly. "Don't panic. Old bones are tougher than they look. She's faking. My Alpha is almost here. Leave them in for a few more minutes. If she was going to die, she’d be dead already."

She was dead wrong.

If we missed even one minute of the golden window, Rowena's wolf would be gone forever.

Despair crushed my chest.

Just then, the resort manager came running over. My voice was hoarse. "Help! Her lungs are failing from wolfsbane! Pull her out—hurry!"

He had met Rowena years ago, but he didn't recognize her now. Seeing a woman on the brink of death, he panicked too.

He only came over because of the noise, hoping to suck up to Tessa. He never expected a murder scene.

He hesitated—piss off Tessa, or risk a dead body on the territory and lose his job?

Finally, he pleaded with Tessa. "Miss Montgomery, maybe we should let them out? If she actually dies here, it will ruin the resort."

Tessa glared at him, full of arrogance. "Fine. Drag them out."

The manager waved at Bruno, who finally hauled Rowena and me out of the pool.

She lay on the deck, completely motionless. I didn't even pause to catch my breath—I sprinted to my bag like a madwoman.

My hands were shaking wildly as I dug out her special wolfsbane-antidote serum. I rushed back and popped the cap on the glass vial. I was just about to inject her—

Tessa’s stiletto heel slammed down on my hand, crushing the glass vial to dust.

I whipped my head up, trembling with pure rage. She just pouted. "Drop the act. I let you out. Now get lost. Next time you see me, walk the other way. Consider this me being generous."

Pure, blinding fury completely snapped my control. My wolf eyes flared gold. I lunged up, my claws slicing right across Tessa's cheek. "If Rowena dies, I will bathe in your blood."

She clutched her bleeding face and screamed. "You psycho bitch! I shouldn't have been nice. I should have let you drown!"

I tried to rush her again, but Bruno and the manager pinned my shoulders down to the wet tiles.

Tessa stepped up and went completely feral. She slapped me across the face, back and forth, over and over. My ears rang. I lost count of how many hits I took.

The burning pain in my cheeks snapped me back to reality.

If I wasted another second, Rowena really was going to die.

I broke free and forced open my mate mind-link with Caleb. I screamed into his head in absolute panic.

"Caleb! Your mother's lungs are failing from wolfsbane! We're at the Obsidian Peak pools. Get the pack Healer here right now. If you're late, her wolf is gone!"

His tone echoed in my head, cold and annoyed. "I'm in a pack meeting. Stop bothering me with your dramatic bullshit."

He brutally snapped the link shut from his end. The forceful rejection felt like an ice pick to my brain.

I shook with anger. He heard the word "mother" and naturally assumed it was my mother.

Did he seriously not know whose mother actually had a damaged wolf spirit?

A second later, Tessa whipped around to the entrance, her eyes lighting up. "Caleb! You're finally here!"

She handed all the pack's internal affairs over to me, ordering me to assist him, and gave me the power to impeach him with the Council at any time.Gideon was the son of her late best friend. It took less than two days of working with him to understand why Rowena chose him.The man was lethal. Brilliant. Built like a god of war, and entirely focused on the pack. When Caleb finally came storming back and found out Rowena had completely stripped his inheritance, he lost his mind.He kept muttering to himself, convinced it was a mistake. He was her only biological son—how could she give his birthright to an outsider? He just couldn't accept reality. But I knew exactly why—no one hated betrayal more than Rowena.Caleb watched his father destroy his mother, and then he turned around and did the exact same thing. He begged. He cried. But Rowena shut him out completely. She packed her bags and lef

Right then, a scream echoed from the hallway. "Get your hands off me! My mate is Alpha Caleb Sterling!"Two massive Pack Enforcers dragged Tessa into the room. They threw her onto the floor. "Found her lurking in the corridor, Luna. Eavesdropping."Tessa's eyes went wide. She instantly squeezed out fake tears. "Caleb! I just came to apologize to your mom..."Caleb roared, his eyes glowing red with his Alpha aura. "Didn't you hear her? Let her go!"But the Enforcers didn't even blink. They only answered to Rowena. She gave a slight nod.Tessa scrambled behind Caleb, clinging to his shirt. "They scared me to death."Then she shot Rowena a pitiful look. "I'm so sorry about yesterday. I really didn't know you were Caleb's mom."Rowena didn't even look at her. "Save your apologies. A few weeks in the silver-lined cells will teach you respect."Caleb's face paled. "Mom, what are you doing?"He whipped around to glare at me. "Valerie, did you put her up to this? I told you—you are the only on

I checked the time. Caleb should have dropped her off and been on his way back by now.I called him. It rang twice before someone answered. But it wasn't Caleb."Valerie Sterling," Tessa's smug voice echoed through the speaker. "Still clinging, huh? You really don't know when to quit."Rowena waved her hand from the hospital bed. I put it on speaker."Put Caleb on the phone," I said coldly. "It's an emergency."Tessa giggled. "He's in the shower. We just had a little fun. He can't get enough of me. Honestly, just give up. You can't compete."I gritted my teeth. "One last time—put him on the phone. His mother needs him.""Ugh, fine. Let me go ask him."I heard her yell in the background, "Caleb, baby! It's Valerie! Do you want to talk to her?"Caleb paused. He must have thought the phone was muted. "Ignore her. Tell her I'll be there soon."Tessa's voice turned breathy and seductive. "Leaving already? You're not going to finish what we started on the counter?"I heard a heavy thud, fol

Caleb immediately stepped in front of Tessa, shielding her from me. "Valerie, Tessa is just a young Omega. Don't be so vindictive. I'll send her away right now. I promise you'll never see her again."I looked at him, and the very last shred of love I had for him vanished. I laughed. A cold, hollow sound. "Vindictive? You are so generous, Caleb. The woman your little pet almost murdered with wolfsbane today was your own mother."Tessa shrieked from behind him. "That's your fault! If you hadn't tricked me about who she was, I never would have touched her!"It's on you! You tried to kill his mom just to frame me! You are sick and twisted!"She was actually trying to pin this on me. The idiot couldn't even connect the simplest dots. I was so mad I actually laughed.I was done wasting my breath on her. "I told you who she was from the beginning. You were just too stupid to understand. This is attempted murder of a former Luna. I'm calling the Pack Enforcers."I grabbed my phone, but before

She threw herself into his arms, pointing her bleeding face at him like the biggest victim in the world. "Caleb, what took you so long? These two low-rank bitches bullied me so badly."She pouted. "Look. That bitch scratched my face. You have to handle them for me. Plus, you owe me—you need to stay in bed with me for a whole week to make up for this."Caleb pulled her close with pure heartache. He instantly released his Alpha aura, his voice thick with rage. "Who dared touch you? I'll kill them. Don't worry, baby—I cleared a whole week just for you. I'm all yours."This was the man who had just brutally cut off our mind-link.This was the man who held me tight last night, complaining about having to do "territory inspections" for a week, swearing he’d miss me.All lies. Every single promise—worthless.Tessa wrapped her arm around his waist, blatantly showing him off to me.She pointed at me. "That's her. She scratched me.
