Melinda’s POV

I chose to completely ignore my ex-husband.

To me, he was just background noise but Rowan was not ignoring him.

Rowan sat right beside me, his broad shoulders squared, his large hand still resting casually on my wrist.

He had heard Carl’s sharp, venomous comment about our romantic outing, and instead of flinching, Rowan merely flashed a sharp, dangerous smile.

"I was unaware," Carl said, his voice dropping

Carl"No." The word tore out of me before I'd even fully processed it, my body moving before my mind caught up, ignoring every protest from my battered ribs as I shoved past Kian toward the empty dais."No, no, no, she was right here.""Carl." Kian grabbed my arm, his grip firm despite the blood still running down his own face."You've been out for almost ten minutes and a lot happened.""Ten minutes." I stared at him, the words barely registering. "Ten minutes, and nobody stopped them from taking her?""We were fighting a small army, Carl, in case you missed it." Kian's voice cracked with exhaustion and something rawer underneath, guilt maybe, or grief."Rowan tried. He went down hard doing it, two of my best wolves are still unconscious near the breach wall. We were losing when you blacked out, and by the time we finally pushed them back, the silver-haired man and what was left of his men were already gone. Melinda wit

Carl The humming grew louder, vibrating up through the stone floor and into my bones, and every instinct in my body screamed to break free of the silver chains and get Melinda as far from that dais as possible. "Stop this," I shouted over the rising noise. "Whatever you think you're doing…" "What we're doing," the silver-haired man said calmly, raising his voice just enough to carry over the hum, "is correcting a mistake generations old. Nothing personal, Alpha, it was merely necessary." The guards forced us both up the shallow steps of the dais, my boots scraping against stone worn smooth by centuries of feet before mine. Melinda stumbled beside me, her wrists still bound, her face pale as death in the amber glow now pulsing steadily beneath us. "Carl." Her voice shook. "If this severs the bloodline, I don't know what happens to me. I don't know if it just takes the power or if it takes more than that."

MelindaThey dragged me to my feet the same way they'd hauled Carl up, my wrists burning where the silver bit into my skin, my legs barely holding my weight after everything the night had already taken out of me."Wait." Ashley's voice cut sharp through the chapel, and she stepped forward before anyone could stop her. "You said a trade, you said the children go free.""They will," the silver-haired man said, unbothered. "The moment we're clear of this location, not a second before. I don't leave loose variables behind me, even ones I've already agreed to release.""That wasn't the deal.""It's exactly the deal," he said. "You simply misunderstood the terms."Ashley's jaw clenched, and for the first time all night, I saw something in her expression that looked less like the woman who'd threatened to destroy my life and more like someone drowning in the consequences of a choice she never should have made."Ashley." My voic

CarlMy wolf didn't care about strategy. He cared about the two small heartbeats huddled against the altar and the six shapes closing in from the shadows, and every instinct in me screamed to put myself between them and whatever was coming.I positioned myself in front of Melinda's shifted form, my hackles raised, watching the newcomers spread out in a loose semicircle around the chapel hall. They moved wrong for hired muscle, too coordinated, too silent, each one falling into position like they'd rehearsed this a hundred times before.Ashley had gone rigid near the altar, her earlier fury replaced by something closer to panic. "Who authorized this?" she demanded, her voice cracking."I said to two guards. I said contain, not…"One of the figures stepped forward into the lantern light, and I felt Melinda go tense beside me, a low growl building in her throat. He was older, silver threading through dark hair, dressed in robes similar to th

MelindaThe gate hung open like an invitation, rusted hinges creaking faintly in the wind, and beyond it the road narrowed into a long gravel drive swallowed almost entirely by dark trees on either side."This is it," Carl said quietly, slowing the car. "You're sure about the coordinates?""I'm sure." My voice came out steadier than I felt. "Turn in."He hesitated only a second before easing the car through the gate, gravel crunching loud beneath the tires in the otherwise silent night. The headlights swept over broken fencing, an old barn leaning dangerously to one side, and further back, barely visible through the trees, the crumbling shape of what looked like an abandoned chapel. The eastern chapel. Exactly where Kian had said, except we'd turned back before ever reaching it the first time."She lied," I said slowly. "About moving locations. She was here the entire time.""Or she moved back once she realized we'd figu

CarlNobody spoke for a long moment. Elder Voss stood there on the porch steps waiting, his eyes moving between Melinda and me like he was trying to read the truth off our faces before either of us said a word."By whom," he asked again, quieter this time. "Melinda. Who took them?"I could see her weighing it, the same calculation I'd watched her run a dozen times tonight already, deciding how much truth was safe to hand over and to whom. I stepped in before she had to answer."We don't know yet," I said. "That's the truth, Elder. We received a photograph proving they're alive, and we've been trying to locate them ourselves rather than waste time waiting on a council response."Voss's gaze sharpened on me. "You didn't think to report a kidnapping immediately?""We were told not to involve the council," Melinda said, finding her voice again. "Whoever has them made that condition very clear. If we bring in warriors, if we make this
