Chapter 2

作者: Upside-Down Mouse
Watching the Kane sisters shower Evan with such blatant favoritism felt like being plunged into a freezing lake.

Evan's question from moments ago echoed relentlessly in my mind.

How long would it take to replace me? The bitter truth was, they already had.

My chest tightened so much I couldn't breathe, let alone find the words to defend myself.

Suddenly, Evan scrambled up from the floor and dropped to his knees in front of me. "I'm so sorry, Declan! I didn't realize you'd be this angry about Amelia, Bethany, and Chloe throwing me a birthday party. It's all my fault. You told me to crawl out of this villa like a dog, right? I'll do it! Just please, don't make things hard for me anymore and don't break their hearts."

With that, he actually began to crawl toward the door.

The Kane sisters' faces shifted from pale to livid. Their eyes burned with rage as they glared at me.

I trembled, my mouth hanging open. But seeing that they were looking at me like I was their worst enemy, I felt a wave of desolation wash over me. I knew it didn't matter what I said. They wouldn't believe a single word of it.

Late into the night, the massive villa was a hive of activity.

The city's top medical team had been summoned just to examine Evan, while the Kane sisters hovered over him anxiously.

I stood a few feet away. My head throbbed with pain so intense that it felt like I was being torn in two, as if a dagger were twisting inside my mind, leaving me unable to stand upright.

Gritting my teeth, I approached one of the renowned neurosurgeons. "Doctor, my head hurts. I—"

"Declan, can you please grow up? These doctors are here for Evan. Stop being a nuisance. They had to come all this way in the middle of the night just to clean up your mess." Amelia's voice carried a hint of reproach.

When I didn't move, she stepped forward, grabbed my arm, shoved me into my room, then locked the door tightly behind me.

The pain was so agonizing that I couldn't even walk. I had to crawl to the nightstand to find my painkillers. I shook a handful of pills into my palm, shoved them into my mouth, and chewed them dry.

The bitterness coated my tongue, but it was nothing compared to the bitterness in my heart.

After my parents died in a car accident, my grandparents and I moved to this city and became neighbors with the Kanes.

They were a few years older than me and had always looked out for me.

When my grandparents passed away, they stepped up to take care of me.

I was 19 then. To take care of me, they knocked down the walls between our two villas and remodeled the entire place exactly how I liked it.

The four of us were the closest people in the world until Evan showed up.

It had started on an ordinary day when Evan fainted on our doorstep. I'd felt sorry for the scrawny young man and helped him inside.

From the very first moment the Kane sisters saw him, they started ignoring me. Over the following months, they poured every ounce of their affection into him.

It was as if he had appeared out of thin air specifically to steal their love.

The painkillers finally kicked in. I pushed myself up to lie on the bed, but the door was suddenly kicked open with a violent bang.

Bethany and Chloe stormed in, hurling a thick stack of papers into my face.

I was stunned. Before I could recover, they began to scream at me.

"Since when have you become so jealous and petty? How could you beat and berate Evan when we weren't home?"

"You've bullied him so badly that he's developed clinical depression! Declan, I never knew you could be this cruel."

Chloe yelled, "You knew! You knew Declan was sick all along! That bottle you knocked over in front of us was his targeted meds! Evan, we gave you everything! How could you do this to him?"Amelia and Bethany turned ghostly pale. They snatched the investigation reports to see for themselves. With every page they turned, the last of the color drained from their faces until they were trembling uncontrollably.Perhaps when they were actually doing these things, they didn't think much of it. But seeing it all laid out, they finally realized how deeply they had hurt me.I watched their pathetic display of remorse with cold detachment. It was almost funny. They didn't care when I was actually suffering. Why should I care about their guilt now?I began to wheel myself away, but Evan, who had been huddled on the floor, suddenly lunged toward me. He roared, "You have a tumor in your head! Why aren't you dead yet? Why are you still fighting me for them?"Do you have any idea how hard I wor

The Kane sisters ran straight into Evan, who had just come downstairs for a glass of water. He rushed over and asked in concern, "Amelia, Bethany, Chloe, where have you been? I've been so worried about you! Did Declan come back? Where is he? I know he's upset because of how well you treat me, but running away like this without saying a single word to us is so immature. Please don't be too angry with him."Upon hearing that, the Kane sisters didn't show their usual look of reproach. Instead, they seemed somewhat irritated.Evan's confidence wavered. He quickly pivoted to a placating tone. "Then again, Declan is sick. It's understandable if he's a little moody."Amelia's expression darkened. She lunged forward and grabbed Evan by the collar. "How do you know Declan is sick? What did you do to him?"Evan's face twitched for a fraction of a second before he lapsed back into his victim persona. "Amelia, I only just found out! A classmate of mine is interning at the hospital. He told me

The bodyguards, terrified of waking me, tried to haul the women by the arms. They struggled in a messy tangle but still tried to slip past and rush into the ward. The commotion drew a crowd of curious onlookers from the nearby wards."Let them in," I said coldly. The bodyguards froze and released their grip.Chloe shot them a venomous look. "We're the daughters of the Kane family. Any one of us could end up marrying Declan. If you ever treat us like that again, consider yourselves fired!"I let out a sharp, incredulous laugh. "Throwing your weight around in front of my ward? I don't even know who you are. What makes you think I'd ever marry you?"Amelia rushed to my side. She reached for my hand, but I pulled back before she could touch me.Her eyes were bloodshot, reflecting a profound agony. "Declan, I spoke to the doctor. He said the surgery might cause memory loss. It's okay. Even if you've forgotten us, we'll build new, better memories with you. Just let us make this up to

If Evan was screaming in pain over a tiny scratch, how much agony must Declan have been in?Bethany's expression changed instantly. She immediately headed for the door.Amelia and Chloe quickly realized that as well. They rushed toward the airport at once. They had to get to Declan. They had to be there for him and find a way to make amends for everything they'd done.…Declan's POVI didn't wake up until three days after the surgery.Aunt Linda was there, clad in sterile scrubs and keeping watch by my bedside. The moment she saw my eyes open, she burst into tears. "Declan, does it hurt?"I managed a weak grin. "If I can survive, then it doesn't matter if it hurts."Aunt Linda let out a chuckle and said, "You're going to live a long, long life, Declan."The surgery was a complete success. The doctor had warned me about potential memory loss, but so far, I could recognize everyone I saw.I had a nagging feeling that some things had indeed slipped away, but I had no desire to

Third-person POVThe surgery was underway.Linda was waiting anxiously outside. Declan's phone still rang nonstop in her hand, adding to the irritation.Looking down at the caller ID—one of the Kane sisters again—she finally snapped and answered. She didn't give them a chance to speak before letting out a torrent of bottled-up rage."Stop calling! Don't you dare harass my nephew again! He grew up with you and almost died because of you! How do you even have the nerve to call him? If you have a shred of conscience left, you'll spend every day on your knees repenting and atoning for your sins!"After saying that, Linda hung up.On the other end of the line, the Kane sisters stood in stunned silence as a wave of pure terror washed over them.Amelia's face went pale. She turned to her sisters stiffly. "Linda said Declan almost died. What does that mean?"Bethany and Chloe, their eyes brimming with tears, shook their heads, sobbing that they didn't know.Suddenly, Bethany bolted t

I gritted my teeth and fixed my gaze on the bottle in Evan's hand. "Evan, give me the meds!"Evan seemed to savor my agony. He twisted the cap open, shook out two pills, and took a few steps back. He clicked his tongue like he was calling a dog over. "Declan, crawl over here and beg, and maybe I'll give them to you."Nobody could stomach that kind of humiliation, especially not when the pain was already eating away at my last shred of sanity.A blind rage surged through me. I let out a guttural roar and lunged for the medicine. But whether by design or dumb luck, Evan stumbled back and tossed the entire bottle into the garden fountain. He put on a face of mock regret, but the malicious triumph in his eyes only burned brighter.I raised my hand to strike, but a violent shove sent me reeling. Then, a sharp crack echoed through the air as a palm slammed across my face.My mind went blank.Amelia's face was flushed with fury. "Declan, you've lost your mind! You actually dared to bu
