Chapter 1

It was midnight, and Helen Watkins still hadn't come home.

I picked up my phone and called her.

There was no answer the first time. Or the second. Or the third.

It wasn't until the seventh try that the call finally went through.

Before I could say a word, her impatient voice came down the line, "Are you ever going to give it a rest, Jordan?! God, you're so annoying!"

The deafening beat of music pounded in the background, but it wasn't nearly as grating as the coldness in her words.

I took a deep breath and tightened my grip on the phone. "It's already midnight. Don't forget what you promised me."

My voice was flat, but inside, I couldn't calm down.

Helen and I had already filed our marriage license. All that was left was the wedding.

But right at that critical moment, she fell for someone else and refused, no matter what, to come back home.

I knew I couldn't stop her, so I made her one request.

I asked her for one month. For that month, we would treat each other the way we used to.

If, when the month was up, she still hadn't remembered our past, or still didn't feel the slightest thing for me, I would file for divorce myself.

That's right. Helen had lost her memory.

After we got married, a car accident left her with a head injury. She forgot everything, including her feelings for me.

Then a college student by the name of Tyler Pattison came along.

Helen fell hopelessly for him.

She brought him into high society and bought him a car and a house, showering him with every luxury.

Tyler was frighteningly calculating, too.

Somehow, he'd found my contact information.

He was constantly showing off the time he spent with Helen.

Late at night, when everything was quiet, he would send me long, gushing messages and photos.

Tyler: [Jordan, Helen and I are serious about each other. Please stop clinging to her.]

Tyler: [She doesn't love you at all. Why won't you let her go?!]

Tyler: [Do you really think she can be happy tied to you by some family marriage deal?!]

A family marriage deal?

What Tyler didn't know was that in my marriage to Helen, I had never been the one doing the chasing.

She was the one who pursued me.

Our families had been close friends for generations, and Helen and I had grown up together as childhood sweethearts.

If it weren't for that car accident, Helen and I would have gone on living happily ever after.

But life doesn't deal in what-ifs.

When she heard I was willing to divorce her, Helen hesitated again and again. In the end, for the sake of her future with Tyler, she swallowed her disgust for me and reluctantly agreed.

I set two conditions of my own.

First, she had to be home by midnight every night.

Second, for that month, she couldn't be intimate with any other man.

If she couldn't manage that, I would never agree to the divorce.

And now, only a few days had gone by.

"Jordan, get this straight. You might be my husband on paper, but I don't love you at all. What gives you the right to make demands of me?!"

Helen scoffed.

"Don't you know that every time I come home and see your face, it makes me sick?"

She hurled the vilest words at me without a second thought, not caring in the least whether they hurt me.

I clenched my jaw hard, forcing myself not to lose my composure.

A young man's annoyed voice came through the receiver, whiny and pouting, "Helen, if you make one more phone call, I'm really going to get mad! Here, three drinks as punishment. Drink them, and I'll forgive you!"

It was Tyler.

Then, over the phone, Helen laughed in a doting, gentle tone I had never heard from her before. "Okay, okay, I got it, my little jealous one."

The moment she finished, her voice turned icy again. "Anything else? If not, stop bothering me!"

I said coldly, "Helen, don't forget our deal. Either you come home right now, or I come get you. Otherwise, you can forget about ever getting that divorce."

The other end went silent for a full thirty seconds before Helen spat out a vicious curse, "You're so damn pathetic!"

I can't lose you too!"Helen knelt on the floor, begging me over and over. The commotion was loud enough that my parents came over. The moment my mom saw Helen, the smile vanished from her face. After that meeting, Kim and I started seeing each other often.Kim kept it well hidden, but over time, word still got out in the entertainment industry. The Best Actress winner, Kim Stein, was seeing someone. The paparazzi even leaked photos of the two of us having dinner. In front of the cameras, Kim didn't deny it. She owned it openly. "Yes. But we're not dating. I'm the one chasing him."Her fans immediately went into a frenzy. That night, out of the blue, I got a message from Helen. It was just one line.Helen: [Come get your stuff.]I froze for a second before it sank in.I typed back: [Just throw it out.]She replied immediately: [It's too filthy for me to touch.]Did she mean I was filthy, or my things?I sneered. I couldn't understand how she had the nerve to say something like that.Early the next morning, when I went over to move my things out, Helen was actually home.Other than opening the door, she didn't spare me so much as a glance the whole time. She only

"Hello, Jordan. I'm Kim Stein."I nodded politely. "Of course I've heard of the famous Best Actress winner."She smiled and didn't dwell on it. Instead, she started asking about the things I liked. It was our first meeting, so I'd expected things to be a little awkward. But she turned out to be surprisingly easy to talk to. Around her, I felt unusually relaxed.Halfway through my coffee, I couldn't help asking out of curiosity, "An A-lister like you... needs to go on blind dates too?"Kim smiled helplessly, "Can't be helped. I'm a normal woman too. At my age, of course my family's pushing me to get married."That, I could relate to.After all, my mom's nagging had been driving me up the wall too. After we finished our coffee, Kim graciously invited me to catch a movie with her.I didn't say no.In the theater, we didn't talk much, but when we came out, I could clearly feel that we'd grown a little closer. What I didn't expect was to see two familiar figures the moment we wa

The wedding was a grand affair.Though it had been rushed, everything was top of the line.Besides relatives from both families, a whole crowd of prominent business figures had been invited. It was, by any measure, an event all eyes were on.So no matter how unwilling Helen was, in front of everyone, she had no choice but to go through the motions.During the ring exchange, Tyler showed up.At the entrance of the banquet hall, in front of everyone, he slit his wrist.Helen screamed. Like a madwoman, she threw away the ring and, ignoring everyone trying to stop her, raced to Tyler's side. "Tyler, don't scare me like this! I'm not doing it. I'm not getting married! I'm taking you to the hospital right now!"She helped Tyler up and was about to leave. The guests erupted in an uproar, and both sets of parents were furious.Matthew smashed his glass. "If you dare walk out today, you're no daughter of mine!"Helen didn't even look back.A wedding everyone had been watching ende

Helen's expression instantly turned cold and ugly. "Jordan, are you really that pathetic?! Does keeping someone who doesn't love you by your side actually make you happy?!"She was so worked up that I half suspected she would lunge at me and strangle me the next second. But she never got the chance.Hearing us argue, the caregiver at the door promptly let my parents know.In the end, Helen shot me one last glare, huffed, and left. When my mom learned I wanted to go ahead with the wedding, she cried her eyes out, "Son, why are you putting yourself through this?"My heart ached, but I still comforted her gently, "Don't worry, Mom. I know what I'm doing."My parents felt for me. They didn't want me to keep clinging to something like this. But I refused.I refused to let the two of them off so easily.I'd wondered before why Helen had lost her memory. And even if she had, why was she so cruel to me? Only to me, and no one else.I'd gone to ask her attending physician. The docto

Helen took a deep breath and went on, "So you're planning to hold on to this and not let it go?"I let out a speechless laugh and closed my eyes. After a long while, I opened them again. There wasn't a shred of feeling for her left in them. "Helen, just go. I don't want to see you."Helen hesitated as if she wanted to say more, but I simply closed my eyes and ignored her.She stood, apologized once more, and left without a moment's hesitation. Her lover probably needed comforting right about now, so she didn't dare waste a second.I didn't forgive Tyler. After Helen left, I pressed charges against him for assault.Tyler was taken into custody. The police pulled the security footage. It was shot from a distance, but you could clearly see Tyler pushing me into the road. That alone was enough to put him away for a few years. The moment she heard, Helen rushed to the hospital. She kicked open the door to my room in a rage and stormed up to my bed, demanding answers.
