After Naomi left, I was sprawled across my bed, staring at the empty ice cream container like it held the secret to fixing my screwed-up head. My laptop sat on my desk, blaring some rom-com Naomi had left running before she bailed, all about people who kept screwing up their happy ending with stupid lies.

I wasn’t really watching it, though. My brain was stuck on repeat, cycling through everything that had happened in the past forty-eight hours like some kind of broken record that wouldn’t move on to the next song.

Luca’s mouth on mine in his office—hot and messy, like he was trying to burn us both down. The way my body had responded to him like no time had passed at all.

Then this morning, the cruel comment about Ethan being my “vomit,” like I’m some loser who can’t let go; and Ethan’s quiet voice telling me the bet was fake, that Luca lied to rip my heart out for no damn reason. I keep circling back to that lie, wondering why he’d do it, why he’d let me think I was nothing when he l

  • My Arch Nemesis in my Bed   Chapter 134

I picked it up and handed it to him without thinking, watching his expression shift from tired to something that looked almost like dread when he saw who was calling. He didn’t answer, just let it ring through to voicemail before setting the phone face-down on the couch beside him.“You should probably take that,” I said, even though part of me was relieved he hadn’t.“It’s fine,” he replied, but I could see tension in his shoulders that hadn’t been there a moment ago.“Is it about the wedding?” I asked, the question coming out before I could stop myself. He looked at me for a long moment, clearly debating how much truth to share. “Probably. My mother’s been calling every day asking about the final arrangements.”We were both still fully clothed, sitting on his couch with our respective drinks, but somehow this felt more intimate than any of the times we’d ended up in his bed together.“Do you actually want to marry her?” I asked quietly. “Can’t you just say no?”Luca set down his dri

I felt my stomach drop because that was possibly the worst information I could have received.“She bailed on us for him?” I asked, trying to keep my voice neutral even though internally I was panicking about all the ways this could go wrong.“Apparently he just showed up at her dorm and asked her to lunch, and she said yes without even thinking about our plans,” Riley said, stabbing at his food without actually eating any of it. “She’s been texting him constantly since the festival. I can see her checking her phone every five seconds and smiling at whatever he’s saying.”I could see the jealousy written all over Riley’s face, mixed with genuine hurt that Naomi was prioritizing this new guy over him.“Maybe it’s just lunch,” I said weakly, though we both knew that was probably wishful thinking given how I know first hand how persuasive Cain can be.“Or maybe it’s him trying to get close to her for whatever reason,” Riley replied, finally looking up from his untouched food to meet my ey

We need to talk,” I said, keeping my voice low.“I thought you said no talking,” he replied coolly.“We need to establish ground rules if we’re going to work together for the next two weeks,” I said, crossing my arms and trying to project authority despite feeling completely off-balance. “I have always told you last night was a mistake that’s not going to be repeated.”“Was it?” he asked, and there was a challenge in his voice that made me want to either kiss him or hit him.“Yes,” I said firmly, even though my body was already disagreeing with that assessment. “It was a one-time thing that happened because we were both frustrated and not thinking clearly.”“If that’s what you need to tell yourself,” he said, leaning against the storage cabinet with casual confidence that was infuriating.“These are the rules,” I continued, ignoring his comment. “No touching unless it’s absolutely necessary for work purposes.”“Anything else?” he asked, and I couldn’t tell if he was being sarcastic or

Luca I woke up to the sound of Lily moving around her room, it was still dark outside.“You should probably go,” she said when she noticed I was awake, her voice carefully neutral. “Jessica has an early class, but she’ll be back soon.”I sat up, looking for my clothes that had ended up scattered across her floor i.“Don’t you think we need to talk about what just happened,” I said, finding my shirt and pulling it on while trying to ignore the way my entire body was still buzzing.“No,” she interrupted, finally looking at me with an expression that was completely blank. “We don’t need to talk about anything. This was a mistake.”“It wasn’t a mistake,” I said, standing up and moving toward her despite the obvious walls she was trying to rebuild between us.“Yes, it was,” she said firmly, taking a step back to maintain distance. “You came here upset about Cain, I was frustrated about everything that’s been happening, and we made a really bad decision. That’s all this was.”“That’s bulls

But I couldn’t make myself drive anywhere else. When I texted asking if I could come up, she responded with a frustrated “Fine, but make it quick.”The drive to campus felt like it took forever, every second stretching out while Kai paced restlessly in my head and my body buzzed with leftover adrenaline from the fight with Cain. She opened her door wearing sweatpants and an oversized t-shirt, her hair pulled back in a messy ponytail, looking annoyed and beautiful and completely unaware of how much danger she was in from my own brother.“What are you doing here?” she asked, not moving aside to let me in. “I thought we agreed—”I didn’t let her finish. I pulled her toward me and kissed her with everything I’d been holding back since the festival, since the office, since the day I’d left her.I didn’t plan on touching her. I told myself a hundred times I’d keep it under control. But the I saw her, all that discipline I’d been holding together snapped in half. For a second she went comple

I made it about ten minutes after leaving the festival before Kai started losing his mind completely, his voice roaring through my head loud enough that I had to pull over on the side of the road and grip the steering wheel until my knuckles went white. He touched her, Kai snarled, pacing restlessly inside my consciousness like a caged animal. *He put his scent all over her. He’s daring us. We need to claim her properly before he tries again.*“Shut up,” I said out loud to my empty car, which probably looked insane to anyone driving past. “I’m not claiming anyone. That’s not how this works.”*That’s exactly how this works,* Kai shot back. She’s ours. She’s always been ours. And that bastard brother of yours just tried to stake a claim on what belongs to us.The worst part was that he wasn’t entirely wrong. Cain had deliberately scent-marked Lily in front of everyone, knowing exactly what kind of reaction it would provoke. And it had worked, because I could still smell him on her even
