Chapter 2

Author: Sweet Seven
When Willow was twelve weeks along, Wendy, her mother, said that she wanted to treat the whole family to a meal.

The next morning, Luke video-called her, and Willow answered with a huff. “What?”

Luke stared at her for two seconds. “You look like you’re going to attend your own funeral, Willow.”

Willow grabbed the box of tissues from the table and threw it at the screen. “To hell with going to my own funeral!”

Luke laughed so hard that his shoulders trembled. “Switch to a red dress. It makes you look healthy. You don’t want Mommy dearest to think Samuel is abusing a pregnant woman.”

After insulting him a few more times, Willow hung up. Then, five minutes later, she changed into a red dress.

I stood by the wardrobe and did not know what to say.

Luke arrived earlier than we did in the restaurant’s private room. He was confirming the reservation with the waitress.

When Willow stepped in, she scowled. “Why did you order fish with pickles? I can’t stand sour things right now.”

Luke tossed the menu on the table. “You can’t stand it, but Samuel can. He’s been eating bland food with you for three months. I bet he’s forgotten what real food tastes like.”

The relatives laughed. “Those two are the same as ever. They argue the moment they see each other.”

Willow laughed as well. As I watched, I felt a weight against my chest.

Once dinner started, Wendy brought out a small, golden pendant. “For my grandchild.”

She then turned to me. “Samuel, it wasn’t easy for Willow to get pregnant. Don’t let her keep things bottled up all the time now. Taking care of a pregnant woman’s feelings is absolutely necessary.”

I nodded.

Luke grabbed some fish and said lazily, “Don’t worry, Wendy. Samuel’s great at taking care of people. Even if the world collapses, he’ll shield Willow first.”

Willow glared at him. “Will it kill you to not speak, at least for today?”

Luke raised an eyebrow at that. “I’m praising your husband here, and you’re still mad?”

“You shutting up is the highest form of praise for him.”

Everyone laughed.

Just then, the waitress came in with a tray of soup, but she slipped.

The scalding soup headed straight for Willow, and I instinctively reached over to shield her.

The hot soup spilled on my forearm. It hurt so much that my vision turned white.

The room descended into chaos.

Willow yelled, “Luke!”

I glanced over and saw that Luke had bumped into the back of a chair when Willow shoved him away, leaving only the edges of his cuffs wet.

He was stunned as well. “Willow, Samuel’s the one who got burned!”

It was only then that Willow snapped her head around. When she saw that my forearm was red and blistering, her face turned pale. “Samuel!”

She rushed over. With trembling hands, she tried to roll up my sleeves, but I avoided her hands. “It’s fine.”

She teared up. “How could it be fine? Are you stupid?”

For a moment, she looked as though her heart ached for me, but I no longer had the energy to wonder whether she truly meant it.

Because when the soup spilled, I had not been the first person she called out to.

I went to the washroom and washed the burn with some cold water. My skin was painfully red.

Outside, Willow knocked on the door. “Samuel, open the door. Let me see.”

I did not move.

Then, she said softly, “I didn’t do it on purpose. Luke was the closest, and I was worried he might bump into me. Don’t read too much into it, okay?”

I looked at my reflection in the mirror.

Okay?

Whenever she asked me that, her voice was always the same. It would be soft and gentle, as though the moment I said those words, all the hurt would simply disappear.

When we went back to the room, Luke was fiddling with the pendant. Willow smacked his hand away. “Don’t touch that. It’s for the baby.”

Luke chuckled. “What’s the big deal? It’s not going to break just because I touch it.”

“You’re going to jinx it with your rotten luck,” Willow said, insulting him.

He looked at me. “Hear that? She’s so overprotective.”

I picked up my jacket. Willow immediately got up as well. “Where are you going?”

“The hospital.”

“I’ll come with you.”

But the moment she took a step, she clutched her stomach. Wendy immediately rushed over to steady her, looking terrified.

“Did you just get a fright? Sit down!”

Willow froze. She hesitated for barely two seconds before turning to me. “Samuel, go ahead. I’ll come find you later.”

“Okay,” I said.

That night, the doctor cut open my drenched sleeve.

When he tore off the cloth stuck to my skin, it hurt so much that my hands trembled.

My phone screen lit up. Willow had texted me.

[Tell me when you’re done. I’m worried.]

Half a minute passed before Luke texted too.

[Bro, Willow’s crying because of you. You can’t expect a pregnant woman to cater to your feelings. Don’t push it.]

As I stared at the words, I laughed bitterly.

Apparently, even my pain was a wrong I had done to Willow.

Two years later, I moved my photography studio to the entrance of an old street. An apricot tree stood right outside my door.Every spring, its branches burst into bloom. One day, I took a family photo for a young couple who were celebrating the birth of their one-month-old baby. The baby was tiny and was covered in a red blanket. He was crying so much that his face was all scrunched up. The father was flustered. “Mr. Stane, I don’t dare to hug him. I’m scared of hurting him.”I went over and taught him how to hold the baby’s back. “You can hold him steadier this way.”The man did as I taught him, but he was so nervous that his forehead was covered in sweat. “This is my first time being a dad. I still have a lot to learn.”I pressed on the shutter. When the camera flashed, I saw Willow standing outside. She wore a light gray trench coat, and her hair was slightly longer. A paper bag hung from her hands. She did not come in. I opened the door after the family left. “What

Seven months after Willow’s miscarriage, we finalized our divorce. She wore a black trench coat and sat across from me. Compared to the last time I saw her, she had grown even thinner. Her grip on the pen was so tight that her knuckles turned white. The courthouse clerk asked, “You’ve both gone through your cooling-off period. Are you sure you want to go through with the divorce?”“Yes,” I said. Willow stared at me. She was still trying to find some hesitation on my face, but there was none. She looked down. “Yes.”When we walked out of the courthouse, she handed me a leather envelope. “I sold the house. This is the transaction record.”I did not take it. “The lawyer has already divided our assets.”“I’m not dividing our assets,” she whispered. “I’m just returning what I owe to you.”I stared at her. “Willow, don’t use money to make up for your sins.”Her hands trembled, and the envelope fell to the floor. A stack of documents slipped out. There were the house sale cont

Willow stayed at the hotel across from my photography studio for three days. Not once did I accept the ginger tea and hot compresses she brought me. When I opened the door, I saw her standing at the roadside with a reservation form. The Mother and Child Center in town was working with me for a charity photoshoot for new parents. She must have seen the poster at the entrance. [Reserve your first family photo for your future baby.]Willow stared at the words on the poster and teared up. I stepped past her to open the door. “Samuel, can I help with something?” she whispered. “You don’t have to.”“I used to set up the lights and hand you the lenses.”I stared at her. “That was in the past.”Her hands trembled, and she stopped talking. The first pair of customers I had in the morning were a young couple. The wife was seven months pregnant and struggled to walk. The husband was flustered, unsure whether to support his wife. A thin sheen of sweat had broken out across

Willow finally found me in Northland two months after her miscarriage. That day, I was in a photography studio, taking a family portrait. The boy refused to look at the camera and was crying so much that his face was covered in snot and tears. I squatted down and put the camera on his neck. “Why don’t you take a photo of me?”He immediately stopped crying and clumsily clicked on the shutter. The camera flashed, and I smiled. Willow stood at the door. She was terribly thin and had cut her hair short. She held a paper bag in her hands. Her eyes were bloodshot, a clear sign that she had not slept along the way. When she saw me playing with the little boy, she stood still for a long time and shuffled in after the customers left. “Samuel…”I put my camera away. “What is it?”Willow put a paper bag on the table. “Your medicine. You have a knee injury, so you need to put a hot compress on your wounds during cold days.”I did not touch the bag. Her voice turned even softer.

Willow miscarried. When I received the news, I was on my way to the airport. The nurse said that she was already showing signs of miscarriage, and the emotional turmoil from last night was the last straw for her. She could not keep the baby, and no one could have saved it. “Mr. Stane, Mrs. Stane kept calling out to you, and she was really emotionally unstable.”I stared at the retreating flyover outside the window. “Luke’s there in the hospital.”The nurse was silent for a few seconds. “Mr. Xavier is in the corridor… but he says that he isn’t family.”Suddenly, I laughed. Yesterday, he had ardently signed the form. This time, since the baby was gone, he was no longer family.“Please contact her parents,” I said. “Aren’t you coming here?” the nurse asked softly. “No.”I hung up. Willow sent me a voice message. Her voice was so hoarse that I could barely make out the words. “Samuel, the baby’s gone.”I did not listen to it again. Half an hour later, Luke called.

I did not pick Willow up on the day she was discharged. She called me more than ten times. When I finally answered, she snapped at me, “I’m getting discharged, and you’re making me come home alone?”“Isn’t Luke with you?” I asked. She fell silent for a moment. “Something came up all of a sudden, so he left.”Soon, her voice softened. “Don’t read too much into it. He was just worked up last night. He was worried about the baby.”I took a look at the partially disassembled baby cradle. “You think he was worried, do you?”Willow’s breath stilled. “That was just an offhand remark. Don’t nitpick over my words.”I hung up. That day, I cleared out the nursery. The baby cradle, the star lights, the prenatal education devices, and the baby clothes went into boxes. Willow came back at 9 p.m. Luke was right behind her. When she came in, she was still arguing with him. “Who told you to come in with me?”Luke’s voice was hoarse. “I was worried about you dying in the elevator.”Enra
