Chapter 1

The next morning, Willow started arguing with Luke on the phone, as usual.

“Are you crazy? Why are you calling at 7:30 a.m.?”

Luke chuckled lazily on the other end. “I’m just worried about you driving Samuel to his death. The hospital starts seeing patients at 8 a.m., but you’d still be picking the color of your lipstick at 9 a.m. Your baby is more punctual than you are.”

Willow slammed her eyebrow pencil on the basin. “Seeing how rude you are, your tongue will rot sooner than later.”

I stood at the door of the bedroom and watched as her cheeks turned red from all the yelling.

In the past, I would play the peacemaker at this point. “That’s enough. He just likes running his mouth. Don’t pay him any mind.”

Willow would then complain at that point. “Look at your childhood buddy. Even dogs hate him.”

I believed that they hated each other for years.

When we reached the hospital entrance, Luke was already waiting for us.

He wore a black windbreaker and held two cups of milk as well as the number for the consultation.

It was not easy to get a consultation number at a private hospital.

Willow told me that Luke had a university friend working here, so he knew the process of queuing, paying, and collecting the medical report better than we did.

Back then, I would have thought that Luke had finally learned some human decency.

When Willow saw him, she scowled. “Why did you buy milk? I want to puke just from the smell.”

Luke stuffed one of the cups into my hands. “Yours. With added sugar.”

Then, he gave the other cup to her. “Yours. Without sugar, and warm. Don’t puke on my shoes. They’re expensive.”

Willow scoffed in disdain before taking it. “You’re so annoying.”

Even as she insulted him, she held the cup with steady hands.

I took a look at my cup of milk.

It was with sugar. That had been my preference two years ago.

Later, to support Willow as she worked to get ready for her pregnancy, I stopped drinking sweet drinks.

Luke did not know about that, but he did know that Willow could not drink anything cold or stand the smell of anything sweet.

When we arrived at the door to the examination room, the nurse told us that only one family member could enter with the patient.

Just as I was getting up, Willow grabbed my hand. “Don’t. The last time you watched them draw blood, your face grew paler than mine.”

Luke snickered. “Samuel, if you faint before the baby is born, it’ll be so embarrassing.”

Willow kicked him. “Shut up!”

With exaggerated motions, Luke dodged her kick. “Fine. I’ll go inside and get yelled at instead. You’re going to have to go to church and ask God’s blessing just for me later, Willow.”

“I’ll ask God to curse you instead.”

They argued as they went into the examination room.

Once the door was shut, the corridor fell silent.

I sat down in my chair. The hot milk burned the skin between my thumb and index finger, leaving it red.

Through the door, I could hear Willow whisper, “Don’t touch the report.”

“If I don’t look, how will I know whether my… godson is going to turn out ugly?” Luke asked with a grin.

Willow immediately shot back, “Shut up! He’s not your godson.”

“Fine. Just Stane junior then.”

They started arguing again, as if they were really going after each other’s throats.

I recalled Willow laughing in the voice message.

The checkup ended, and Willow came out with an ultrasound report.

Her eyes were sparkling as she showed me the report. “Samuel, look! Look at the little hands!”

I stared at the blurry image.

Meanwhile, Luke peeked over her shoulder and said sarcastically, “Let’s hope the nose doesn’t take after Willow and the mouth doesn’t take after me. Better if the baby takes after Samuel instead. At least then, it’ll be quiet and won’t cause trouble.”

Willow immediately smacked his arm. “Oh, stop flattering yourself!”

As Luke dodged her, he accidentally knocked into my hand, right where the milk had burned me. I could not help frowning.

Only then did Willow notice the redness. “Why is your hand red?”

“The milk was too hot and burned me.”

She immediately looked for the burn cream in her handbag. She looked for a while and could not find it. Finally, she turned on Luke. “Why did you buy something so hot? If he gets hurt, who’s going to pay for it? You?”

“Would he want me paying for it?” Luke grinned.

Willow was about to start yelling again when I said, “There’s no need. It doesn’t hurt.”

She froze for a moment. “You’re always like this.”

I did not ask what she meant.

She then gave me the ultrasound scan and said softly, “Let’s put it on the fridge later. Have you thought of any names yet? We can pick one tonight.”

I looked at the report.

Emrhys, Salem, Amon, Alin…

Those were the names I had saved on my phone yesterday, like little lights that had never had the chance to shine.

Two years later, I moved my photography studio to the entrance of an old street. An apricot tree stood right outside my door.Every spring, its branches burst into bloom. One day, I took a family photo for a young couple who were celebrating the birth of their one-month-old baby. The baby was tiny and was covered in a red blanket. He was crying so much that his face was all scrunched up. The father was flustered. “Mr. Stane, I don’t dare to hug him. I’m scared of hurting him.”I went over and taught him how to hold the baby’s back. “You can hold him steadier this way.”The man did as I taught him, but he was so nervous that his forehead was covered in sweat. “This is my first time being a dad. I still have a lot to learn.”I pressed on the shutter. When the camera flashed, I saw Willow standing outside. She wore a light gray trench coat, and her hair was slightly longer. A paper bag hung from her hands. She did not come in. I opened the door after the family left. “What

Seven months after Willow’s miscarriage, we finalized our divorce. She wore a black trench coat and sat across from me. Compared to the last time I saw her, she had grown even thinner. Her grip on the pen was so tight that her knuckles turned white. The courthouse clerk asked, “You’ve both gone through your cooling-off period. Are you sure you want to go through with the divorce?”“Yes,” I said. Willow stared at me. She was still trying to find some hesitation on my face, but there was none. She looked down. “Yes.”When we walked out of the courthouse, she handed me a leather envelope. “I sold the house. This is the transaction record.”I did not take it. “The lawyer has already divided our assets.”“I’m not dividing our assets,” she whispered. “I’m just returning what I owe to you.”I stared at her. “Willow, don’t use money to make up for your sins.”Her hands trembled, and the envelope fell to the floor. A stack of documents slipped out. There were the house sale cont

Willow stayed at the hotel across from my photography studio for three days. Not once did I accept the ginger tea and hot compresses she brought me. When I opened the door, I saw her standing at the roadside with a reservation form. The Mother and Child Center in town was working with me for a charity photoshoot for new parents. She must have seen the poster at the entrance. [Reserve your first family photo for your future baby.]Willow stared at the words on the poster and teared up. I stepped past her to open the door. “Samuel, can I help with something?” she whispered. “You don’t have to.”“I used to set up the lights and hand you the lenses.”I stared at her. “That was in the past.”Her hands trembled, and she stopped talking. The first pair of customers I had in the morning were a young couple. The wife was seven months pregnant and struggled to walk. The husband was flustered, unsure whether to support his wife. A thin sheen of sweat had broken out across

Willow finally found me in Northland two months after her miscarriage. That day, I was in a photography studio, taking a family portrait. The boy refused to look at the camera and was crying so much that his face was covered in snot and tears. I squatted down and put the camera on his neck. “Why don’t you take a photo of me?”He immediately stopped crying and clumsily clicked on the shutter. The camera flashed, and I smiled. Willow stood at the door. She was terribly thin and had cut her hair short. She held a paper bag in her hands. Her eyes were bloodshot, a clear sign that she had not slept along the way. When she saw me playing with the little boy, she stood still for a long time and shuffled in after the customers left. “Samuel…”I put my camera away. “What is it?”Willow put a paper bag on the table. “Your medicine. You have a knee injury, so you need to put a hot compress on your wounds during cold days.”I did not touch the bag. Her voice turned even softer.

Willow miscarried. When I received the news, I was on my way to the airport. The nurse said that she was already showing signs of miscarriage, and the emotional turmoil from last night was the last straw for her. She could not keep the baby, and no one could have saved it. “Mr. Stane, Mrs. Stane kept calling out to you, and she was really emotionally unstable.”I stared at the retreating flyover outside the window. “Luke’s there in the hospital.”The nurse was silent for a few seconds. “Mr. Xavier is in the corridor… but he says that he isn’t family.”Suddenly, I laughed. Yesterday, he had ardently signed the form. This time, since the baby was gone, he was no longer family.“Please contact her parents,” I said. “Aren’t you coming here?” the nurse asked softly. “No.”I hung up. Willow sent me a voice message. Her voice was so hoarse that I could barely make out the words. “Samuel, the baby’s gone.”I did not listen to it again. Half an hour later, Luke called.

I did not pick Willow up on the day she was discharged. She called me more than ten times. When I finally answered, she snapped at me, “I’m getting discharged, and you’re making me come home alone?”“Isn’t Luke with you?” I asked. She fell silent for a moment. “Something came up all of a sudden, so he left.”Soon, her voice softened. “Don’t read too much into it. He was just worked up last night. He was worried about the baby.”I took a look at the partially disassembled baby cradle. “You think he was worried, do you?”Willow’s breath stilled. “That was just an offhand remark. Don’t nitpick over my words.”I hung up. That day, I cleared out the nursery. The baby cradle, the star lights, the prenatal education devices, and the baby clothes went into boxes. Willow came back at 9 p.m. Luke was right behind her. When she came in, she was still arguing with him. “Who told you to come in with me?”Luke’s voice was hoarse. “I was worried about you dying in the elevator.”Enra
