CHAPTER ONE THE NIGHT I CAUGHT THEM

The champagne glass slipped from my hand the moment I opened the bedroom door.

It hit the marble floor with a sharp crack, scattering tiny pieces of glass across the carpet.

Neither of them moved.

Neither of them spoke.

For three seconds, I simply stood there, staring at the two people I trusted most in the world.

My husband.

And my best friend.

In my bed.

My fingers went cold.

“Claire…”

My husband’s voice finally broke the silence.

I looked at him.

Then at her.

My best friend, Sophie, was clutching the white sheet against her chest, her hair tangled around her face.

The same face I’d held while she cried about her heartbreak.

The same woman I’d called my sister.

The same woman who had stood beside me six months ago when I married the man I thought I’d spend the rest of my life with.

I laughed.

I didn’t know why.

Maybe because if I didn’t laugh, I would scream.

“So this is why you kept telling me you were tired.”

My husband, Daniel, immediately climbed out of bed.

“Claire, wait.”

“Don’t.”

He froze.

I raised my hand, stopping him before he could come any closer.

“Don’t you dare come near me.”

“It's not what you think.”

I stared at him.

Then at Sophie.

She wouldn’t look me in the eye.

That hurt more than anything.

“Really?” I whispered.

Daniel grabbed a pair of trousers from the floor and pulled them on.

“Claire, please. Just let me explain.”

“Explain what?”

My voice cracked.

“That you were sleeping with my best friend?”

Sophie finally looked at me.

Tears filled her eyes.

“Claire, I’m sorry.”

I turned toward her.

“Sorry?”

She nodded, crying.

“I never wanted to hurt you.”

I actually smiled.

“You never wanted to hurt me?”

I took a step into the room.

“You slept with my husband.”

She flinched.

“You lied to me for months.”

Another step.

“You hugged me. You came to my house. You ate dinner with us. You sat beside me while I told you how lucky I felt to have Daniel.”

“Claire—”

“And all that time…”

My voice dropped.

“You were sleeping with him.”

Silence.

Daniel looked away.

That was when something inside me broke.

Not because he’d cheated.

I’d already understood that.

It was because he wasn’t even trying to deny it anymore.

“How long?”

Neither answered.

I looked between them.

“How. Long?”

Sophie covered her face.

Daniel exhaled.

“Three months.”

Three months.

I stared at him.

Our wedding had been six months ago.

Which meant he’d started sleeping with her three months into our marriage.

And suddenly, all the little things I’d ignored came rushing back.

Daniel working late.

His phone always faced downward.

Sophie suddenly knowing things about our marriage I’d never told her.

The way she’d stopped meeting my eyes whenever Daniel entered a room.

The countless times she’d told me, “He’s just busy, Claire. Don’t overthink it.”

I swallowed hard.

“Three months?”

“Claire, I swear, it wasn’t supposed to happen.”

I laughed again.

“Nothing is ever supposed to happen until it happens.”

Daniel stepped toward me.

I stepped backward.

“Don’t.”

“Claire, I love you.”

That sentence almost made me sick.

“You love me?”

“Yes.”

“Then why were you in bed with her?”

He opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

Exactly.

I wiped my cheeks.

I hadn’t even realized I was crying.

“Take your things.”

Daniel frowned.

“What?”

“Get out.”

“Claire—”

“Get out of my house.”

“Please, can we talk about this?”

“No.”

I pointed toward the door.

“Get out before I do something we’ll both regret.”

Daniel stared at me for a long moment.

Then he walked past me.

He stopped at the doorway.

“Claire…”

I didn’t look at him.

“I never meant for you to find out like this.”

My head snapped toward him.

“Find out?”

He looked uncomfortable.

“What exactly did you think was going to happen?”

He said nothing.

I nodded slowly.

“Get out.”

He left.

The bedroom door closed behind him.

And suddenly, it was just me and Sophie.

My best friend.

The woman who had known me since we were teenagers.

She climbed out of bed, wrapped the sheet around herself and approached me.

“Claire…”

“Don’t call my name.”

She stopped.

“I was going to tell you.”

“When?”

She started crying harder.

“I don’t know.”

“Before or after you got pregnant?”

The room went completely still.

Sophie stopped breathing.

I stared at her.

She stared at me.

And in that moment, I knew.

My stomach dropped.

“You’re pregnant.”

She didn’t answer.

“Sophie.”

Her lips trembled.

“I’m sorry.”

I took a step backward.

“No.”

“Claire…”

“No.”

I shook my head.

“No, no, no.”

She covered her stomach instinctively.

And that tiny movement told me everything.

My best friend was pregnant.

With my husband’s baby.

I felt like the floor had disappeared beneath me.

“How far?”

She looked down.

“Eight weeks.”

Eight weeks.

I did the calculation automatically.

Daniel had told me he’d been traveling for work eight weeks ago.

He’d kissed me goodbye at the airport.

He’d told me he’d miss me.

He’d called me every night.

Apparently, he’d been lying.

I pressed my hand against my mouth.

“You…”

My voice barely came out.

“You were pregnant while you were sitting in my kitchen eating breakfast with me?”

She sobbed.

“I didn’t know how to tell you.”

“You didn’t know how?”

I stared at her in disbelief.

“You could have told me the truth.”

She shook her head.

“I was scared.”

“Of what?”

“That I’d lose you.”

I laughed bitterly.

“You lost me the moment you got into that bed.”

She cried silently.

I walked toward the closet.

“What are you doing?”

I grabbed her handbag from the chair and threw it at her.

“Leave.”

She caught it.

“Claire, please.”

“Leave my house.”

“I have nowhere to go.”

I turned around.

For the first time that night, my anger disappeared.

All I felt was exhaustion.

“You should have thought about that before sleeping with my husband.”

She lowered her head.

Then she whispered something that made me freeze.

“Daniel wasn’t supposed to marry you.”

My heart stopped.

“What?”

Sophie looked at me through her tears.

“He was supposed to marry me.”

I stared at her.

“What are you talking about?”

She wiped her face.

“We were together before you met him.”

My breathing became shallow.

“No.”

“Yes.”

“You’re lying.”

“I wish I was.”

She stepped closer.

“Daniel and I dated for almost two years.”

My mind went blank.

Two years?

I had known Daniel for one year before our wedding.

That meant…

He had been with Sophie before he ever met me.

And she had known exactly who he was.

I shook my head.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

Her eyes filled with tears again.

“Because he chose you.”

I felt something twist inside my chest.

“He said he loved you,” she continued. “He said you were different. He said he wanted a fresh start.”

I stared at her.

“And you just accepted that?”

“No.”

Her voice changed.

There was something bitter underneath her tears now.

“I didn’t.”

Before I could ask what she meant, my phone buzzed.

Once.

Then again.

An unknown number.

I pulled it from my pocket.

UNKNOWN: You shouldn’t be blaming Sophie.

I frowned.

Another message arrived.

UNKNOWN: Your husband isn’t the only person who’s been lying to you.

My blood ran cold.

I looked at Sophie.

She was staring at my phone.

“Who is that?”

I didn’t answer.

Another message appeared.

This time, there was a photograph attached.

I opened it.

My heart stopped.

It was Daniel.

Standing beside Sophie.

But the picture wasn’t recent.

They were much younger.

And Sophie was holding a newborn baby.

Under the photograph was one sentence:

“Ask your husband what happened to his first child.”

I slowly looked up at Sophie.

Her face had gone completely white.

“What?” I whispered.

She didn’t answer.

“Sophie…”

She backed away from me.

“I have to go.”

I grabbed her wrist.

“What happened to Daniel’s first child?”

She stared at me.

Then she whispered four words that changed everything.

“Claire… that child is yours.”
