Sophia's POV

We reached Mini's place a little after three, and I collapsed onto her couch the second we stepped through the door, sinking into the cushions like my body had been waiting all day for permission to finally stop moving.

"That bad, huh?" Mini dropped her keys on the counter, already heading toward the kitchen. "So. Wine or anything?"

I lifted my head just enough to give her a look.

"Right." She winced, catching herself. "Water. Obviously. Sorry, I forgot for a second there's a whole

Sophia's POVI woke up the next morning to the smell of coffee again, though this time I didn't have the stubbornness left in me to walk past it.The house was quiet, Dante apparently having stayed the night in one of the guest rooms after Mini finally left close to midnight, still glowing about the whole evening in a way that made me smile just thinking about it. I found Ethan alone in the kitchen, sleeves rolled up, standing over a pan with far more concentration than scrambled eggs usually required."You're cooking again."He glanced up, something cautious in his expression, like he wasn't sure yet whether I'd walk past this plate too. "I figured I'd try again. Properly, this time.""Properly how?""With an actual apology attached to it." He set the pan down, turning to face me fully, and I watched him gather himself the way he did before difficult board meetings, steady, deliberate, like he'd rehearsed the words more than once overnight. "I'm sorry, Sophia. For what I said. There'

Sophia's POVMini pulled up outside the house a little after nine, the two of us still laughing over something from dinner, and I was halfway through unbuckling my seatbelt when I noticed two figures standing near the front steps, half lit by the porch light."Who are they?" Mini leaned forward slightly, squinting through the windshield.I looked closer, and something in my chest loosened at the sight of them, recognition settling in before I could even fully make out their faces."That's Dante," I said. "And Ethan.""Dante." Mini repeated the name slowly, like she was testing how it felt in her mouth, already reaching for her door handle before I'd even finished processing that she planned on getting out of the car at all. "I think I'm going to invite myself in.""Mini, it's late.""I wasn't waiting for you to invite me."She was already out of the car before I could argue further, and I sighed, grabbing my bags off the seat and following her toward the two men waiting near the steps

Sophia's POV"Julius." I found myself smiling before I'd fully decided to, some old, easy familiarity surfacing despite how long it had been. "It's been years.""It has." He smiled back, hands tucked into his pockets, glancing briefly at Mini before returning his attention to me. "You look well. Married life suits you, apparently.""Something like that.""Mind if I join you? Just for a moment. I promise I won't make it weird."I glanced at Mini, who shrugged with an easy, curious expression, clearly more than happy to let the evening take an unexpected turn, and gestured toward the empty seat across from us."Sure. Sit."He slid into the booth, and for a few minutes the conversation stayed light, catching up on the years between us in the easy, surface way people do when too much time has passed to cover properly in one dinner. He asked about my mother. I asked about his job, some consulting role he described with a modesty that didn't quite hide how well he was clearly doing. Mini wa

Mini dropped her keys on the counter, already heading toward the kitchen. "So. Wine or anything?"I lifted my head just enough to give her a look."Right." She winced, catching herself. "Water. Obviously. Sorry, I forgot for a second there's a whole other person involved now.""Two, actually.""Two." She said it like she was still trying the word on for size, shaking her head as she filled two glasses, one with water for me and, after a brief hesitation, water for herself too, apparently deciding solidarity mattered more than the wine she'd originally wanted. "I still can't believe it. Twins, Sophia. I keep waiting for it to feel real and it just keeps not.""Try being the one carrying them."She laughed, dropping down onto the couch besid

Sophia's POVThe gel was cold against my skin, just as Dr. Mathew had warned, and I flinched slightly as he pressed the ultrasound wand against my stomach, moving it slowly, watching the screen beside the table with careful, practiced attention."There we go," he said after a moment, angling the monitor slightly so I could see it too. "Right there, that's the head. And just below it, the stomach. And if you look here—" he traced a small shape near the edge of the screen "—that's a leg."I stared at the grainy black and white image, my chest tightening with something I didn't have a name for yet, somewhere between fear and wonder and a disbelief so complete it made the rest of the room feel slightly unreal."That's really—" My voice caught. "That's really in there.""It really is." Dr. Mathew smiled, gentle and unhurried, giving me a moment to simply look before continuing."Is it too early to know the gender?" I asked eventually, my eyes still fixed on the screen."A little early for

Sophia's POVI wasn't really listening to Mini anymore. She was still talking beside me, something about her coworker and the disastrous blind date again, circling back to embellish a detail she'd apparently left out the first time, but her voice had faded into a kind of background hum somewhere behind my own thoughts, which had drifted, without my permission, back to the plate of eggs sitting cold on the kitchen table that morning.I kept replaying the look on Ethan's face. Hopeful, then confused, then something quieter and more wounded once I'd walked past him without a word. I told myself I didn't owe him softness yet, not after two nights of silence following an accusation he still hadn't properly apologized for, but some small, tired part of me kept circling back to the memory anyway, picking at it the way you pick at a bruise just to see if it still hurts."Sophia."I blinked."Reyes," the receptionist called again, louder this time, glancing up from her desk with the patient ex
