I wanted to take time off from work. I was still too shaken by what happened in Alaric’s office. I couldn’t believe he did that! That jerk! What is he planning? Why is he doing this to me? If he’s angry, then he should just be angry. Why does he have to do that?

I asked myself several times whether I wanted to go to work, but my body, mind, and soul all agreed: I shouldn’t, I didn’t want to go.

“She’s been acting crazy since yesterday,” I heard Serenity say to Scarlet, my other sister.

“Really?”

Serenity nodded firmly. “It’s worse today… she’s even holding her lips. Yesterday she was just laughing to herself like she’d lost her mind,” she made up a story.

The two of them laughed. I shot them a sharp look. How could they laugh at my misery?

“Will you please mind your own business? If you have nothing to talk about, don't talk about me!”

“Oh, please… I’m just concerned, Ate,” Serenity said dramatically. “You’re not yourself today.”

I’m the oldest. Serenity comes after me, and our youngest is Scarlet.

“It’s true. You might not realize it, but you keep frowning even when there’s no one to be mad at. Why?”

“I told you already, sis. She’s going crazy!” Serenity cut in.

I rolled my eyes at them. “Will you two shut up?”

Because I was out of my mind, I didn’t go to work. I had no idea how I was supposed to face my boss after he threatened to fire me…and then kissed me!

I wanted to take a whole week off, but my salary would suffer. We’re poor. Goodness! If only my grandparents hadn’t made enemies, life would’ve been comfortable.

We used to be alta. My ancestors were wealthy, but our family fortune began to fade because of the feud. Many lands and properties were sold in an attempt to save my grandparents’ company, but it still failed. Sadly, my grandfather’s rivals grew even rich and influential. According to my mom, that family made sure every Salazar would end up poor.

They succeeded—because I couldn’t even afford to be absent for one more day. We’d fall short on expenses.

The next day, I went to the office, nerves on edge. While riding the jeep, my mind was busy, thinking of ways on how to avoid my boss. Just imagining facing him made it feel like I couldn’t breathe from anxiety.

“Are you okay? You didn’t go to work yesterday,” Sara asked as soon as she saw me, Lina standing beside her.

“Your boss was looking for you yesterday. He asked for you twice. I tried calling when he looked for you the second time, but you couldn’t be reached,” Lina added.

My breath hitched at what I heard. He looked for me twice? What does he need from me?

“You’re sick, right? You look pale,” Sara guessed.

Almost instantly, an idea came to me.

“Yes… I wasn’t supposed to go in today, but I was thinking about my salary,” I said, pretending to be weak. I even touched my stomach as if it hurt. “I have a bad stomach, but I think I can manage, so I came in.”

I saw Sara’s eyes widen. “Oh no, you should’ve just gotten a medical certificate. That might get worse,” she said with concern.

I shook my head. “I can handle it.”

The first thing I did was deal with the unfinished work for Alaric. Maybe that’s why he came looking for me

Or maybe he was looking for me because he was going to fire me. I immediately shook my head at the thought. I shouldn’t run into him today!

My back ached as I finished all the remaining documents. I pretended to be weak as I turned to Sara, and luckily, she was already looking at me.

“Can I ask a favor?” I asked, pretending to be weak again.

“Of course. What is it? Are you in pain?” she asked immediately.

“Well… I need to submit these papers to my boss. But I’m feeling weak,” I trailed off to smile weakly at her. “Maybe you could deliver them for me… if that’s okay with you?”

I breathed a sigh of relief when I saw her head toward Alaric’s office, carrying the documents I had reviewed.

I bit my lower lip and leaned back against my swivel chair once she disappeared from view.

It took Sara fifteen minutes to return. She came back with a wide smile, her eyes sparkling.

“Seraphina! I think I’m in love,” she said, blushing. “He’s so handsome up close… If he hadn’t sent me out, I would’ve stayed there!”

I frowned for a reason I couldn’t quite name, but I didn’t show it. At least I didn’t have to face that man anymore.

Or so I thought.

Because an hour after Sara submitted the papers, Basty approached me and said my boss was calling for me. Apparently, I still hadn’t submitted my new project plan!

After printing the documents, I pretended to be weak and went back to my table. I thought I still needed to go to his office, but I didn’t.

“I’ll take that to your boss,” Sara volunteered cheerfully. She didn’t even wait for my response. She immediately took the folder and went to Sir’s office.

This time, she didn’t take long. It felt like she had barely entered before she came right back out. She returned to her desk, sulking.

“What did he say? Why did you come back so fast?” I asked, curiously.

My boss had clearly told me that he would check every revision immediately so I’d know right away what needed fixing. He always stopped whatever he was doing just to review my work on the spot. So why did Sara come out so quickly this time?

“Nothing. He asked why I was the one delivering it and why it wasn’t you. I told him you weren’t feeling well,” she said, pouting. “He took the folder and told me to leave,” she added, sounding disappointed.

She stayed quiet for a few seconds, then spoke again.

“I don’t understand why he got mad. I just said you weren’t feeling well, but it seemed like he got angry.”

“Tell me, why did you meet that man again?” His eyes narrowed as he pinned me down on the bed.He was on top of me, holding both my hands above my head. His face was close to mine, and I could feel his breath as he spoke. He had been teasing me earlier, saying he would not let me go home, until he remembered why I had dinner with Magnus. Now I was pinned to his bed, being interrogated.“Alaric, let me go…” I tried to wiggle free, but who was I kidding? He was far stronger than me.He smirked. “Stop fighting and be a good girl. Why did you meet him? Hmm?” I could hear the mockery in his tone.I sighed. I did not want to admit that it was because of Analise that I went with Magnus, but I knew Alaric would keep me pinned on his bed forever if I did not tell him why.I had no choice but to confess. “I just think that it is unfair. Why can’t I go with Magnus when you have Analise?” I trailed off and licked my lips, trying to hide my embarrassment. “Well… I thought Analise is your girlfrien

I don’t know how many hours I slept. I only woke up when I felt someone touching my forehead. Even though I didn’t want to, I slowly opened my eyes.Alaric smiled. “Wake up. You need to eat dinner,” he said in a low, calm voice.I whined. “Later… I’m still sleepy.”I closed my eyes again, trying to go back to sleep, but I felt his hand on my forehead again, waking me up.“Alaric, seriously!” I said irritably. He chuckled. “As much as I don’t want to wake you, I don’t want you to skip dinner either. At least eat a little.”He didn’t leave me alone, so I had no choice. I sat up on the bed, annoyed. That’s when I realized I was already wearing a white t-shirt. It was big on me, but comfortable. He probably cleaned me up after I fell asleep. He fed me since I was still irritated that he woke me up. Mom wouldn’t even bother waking me when I said I didn’t want dinner, but this man just wouldn’t stop.I chewed my food with irritation. After a few bites, I refused to eat anymore. He just sigh

“Mom, I just have something work-related to take care of…” I trailed off, trying to think of a more believable alibi. “It’s urgent, so I won’t be coming home tonight. I’ll stay overnight.”“Just do that here at home,” she said strictly. I could already tell she didn’t agree.I bit my lower lip. I glanced at Alaric, who was already getting ready for us to leave for his condo. He must have felt me looking at him because he looked back at me with a raised brow. I frowned at him.“It really can’t be done at home… just this once, Mom.”I heard her sigh, probably stressed because she had to decide. Dad wasn’t around, so all the decisions fell on her. I know I’m an adult now and I should be deciding for myself, but sometimes it’s not that simple. In this case, if I didn’t ask for permission, she would worry, and I didn’t want that.“Who are you with? Let me talk to them,” she said, clearly stressed.I immediately felt nervous. This was really hard, what Alaric was making me do.“Mom… I’m an

He just laughed at me when he heard about Analise. I glared at him—how dare he laugh at me?I pushed him away when he kissed me again. But he was hard to move. I sobbed because of what he was doing. Am I really that easy for him?I felt his left hand slide over my thigh. I was wearing an office skirt, and it kept riding up as he settled between my legs. I shivered when his hand moved higher, toward the center. His lips trailed down to my ear, and I managed to breathe again. When I regained a bit of strength, I tried to wiggle out from under him.“Stop fighting, Seraphina…” he whispered against my ear, his voice low and hoarse.“Then stop this! I don’t want this…” I cried, still pushing him away.“Damn it!” he snapped. “I don’t know how you found out about Analise, but she’s my damn cousin, for God’s sake!”I froze at what he said. I stopped pushing him. I blinked, then shut my eyes when I felt him bite my earlobe.“Now tell me, why did you meet that man? Hmm?” he asked, a mocking tone

I was thankful to Magnus for lightening the mood. After he admitted that he missed me, he quickly changed the topic. I appreciated that because I wasn’t ready to talk about the past. The only reason I was still going along with him was because he was kind, and he used to be my best friend before we got into a relationship. I missed that version of us, back when he treated me like a princess. But to be honest, a part of me still wanted to ask what I did to make him stop loving me. I also wanted to know why Tito suddenly turned his back on Papa when they used to be close. Tito couldn’t be reached anymore when Papa needed help. Even Magnus stopped contacting me. We moved on without ever knowing why they suddenly left. But now, everything was fine. We survived without them, so maybe knowing their reason didn’t matter anymore. After he finished eating, he invited me to come with him. He had a party to attend and offered to take me along. I refused because I still needed to go back to the c

There was only a small issue that needed to be fixed at the venue, and it could have been handled over a call, but I still decided to go there myself. When I arrived at the Imperial Hotel, the manager immediately assisted me. It only took us fifteen minutes, and the problem was resolved. I even tried to keep the manager talking so I could stay a little longer, but since he had work to do, he eventually left me.I walked around the venue to check everything. They were decorating since there was an event there the next day. A lot of people were moving around, and I blended in with them.“Excuse me, what event is happening here tomorrow?” I asked someone I passed by who was holding flowers. She was a bit startled. “There’s a wedding tomorrow, Ma’am.”She left right after answering me. I continued walking around the venue just to kill time. When I had seen everything, I decided to leave. Some people were already looking at me, probably wondering what I was doing there.I was about to walk

I didn’t tell Alaric that I didn’t have a passport. I had no intention of going to Italy! My salary was already barely enough, and I was supposed to spend on that trip? And even if the company covered the expenses, I still didn’t want to go. An alone trip with Alaric? Never! Who knows what might ha

I don’t know if the person on the line heard it. He licked his lips and chuckled darkly as he listened. He slid a hand around my waist and pulled me closer. He leaned me against his chest, and together we faced the view outside. I smiled when I caught our reflection in the glass. He was holding me
