Chapter 2

Tessa Ford

~•~

Vanessa? He missed our daughter’s birthday dinner just to go out with that woman? My leg was still glued to that spot as I tried to process what was happening.

I still couldn’t believe what I was seeing.

Grayson was unbelievable.

My eyes burned with rage and I couldn’t even look at the screen anymore. His hands were on her fucking waist!

Different thoughts ran through my head and I needed a minute. I turned off the television and grabbed a glass of water.

The water didn’t even help to calm the storm that was brewing inside of me. A bitter laugh escaped my lips. “Of course, it was about another woman. His ex-girlfriend, Vanessa.”

It felt like the walls were closing in on me and I pressed my palms against the kitchen counter, trying to steady my breathing.

Even if the image of them replayed in my head, a part of me wanted to believe that it was just a friendly meeting and it didn’t mean anything.

When we started dating, Grayson assured me that Vanessa didn’t mean anything to him and that the chapter was over.

I believed him.

Ever since we got married, he hadn’t even mentioned her name. It was as though she completely disappeared from his life — she actually did, she moved to another country.

And now that she was back, he wanted to abandon us?

He wanted to ruin our marriage because of someone from his past?

My heart twisted painfully as I thought about losing my husband. I honestly had no idea what to do.

I let out multiple deep breaths before heading over to Raven’s room. I wasn’t sure what I wanted to say to her, but I just wanted to check if she was okay.

“Hey, don’t cry baby, he’s probably busy with work or something.” I lied just to make her feel better as I sat on the edge of the bed.

“But I told him about it this morning, he… he never forgets my birthday.” She replied in between quiet sobs.

I ruffled her hair, my chest heavy. “I’m sure he’ll come back with a present for you,” I muttered, trying to sound convincing. “Just stop crying, so you don’t get sick.”

Raven didn’t stop crying.

I had no choice but to sit there and give her a comforting pat until she fell asleep. After that, I made my way back to my room.

The next morning, I woke up to an empty bed. Even though Grayson had been acting distant, he always spent the night at home. But this time around, he didn’t come back home.

My eyes burned with unshed tears as I started to realize the gravity of the situation. Was my marriage really about to end?

I was lost in my thoughts when the door creaked open. I looked up and saw him walking into the room.

“Where have you been?” I stood up, confronting him immediately. “You missed Raven’s birthday dinner, she was waiting for you.”

I didn’t want to talk about what I had seen on the news yet, I wanted to see what excuse he had for missing his daughter’s birthday dinner.

Grayson let out a deep exhale, his expression unreadable. “Is that how you speak to your husband in the morning?” He asked as he loosened his tie.

I couldn’t hold back a scoff. “That’s all you can say?” I asked, my voice sharp with annoyance. “Where have you been?”

He didn’t respond immediately.

He moved closer to the bed and took off his shirt. “I was at a business meeting, I’m sorry I didn’t make it to Raven’s birthday dinner.” There was no hint of remorse in his voice.

Business meeting?

Didn’t he have any idea that their photos were all over the news?

I couldn’t believe the nerve of him to lie straight to my face.

“Grayson, I’m going to ask you one more time, where have you been?” I demanded, my voice low but venomous.

His brows knitted into a frown. “I was at a business meeting. Didn’t you hear me the first time?”

My throat went dry. “You were at a business meeting or you were with Vanessa?” I scoffed bitterly. “So this is what you’re doing now? You’ve started lying to me?”

His jaw hardened. “I was at a business meeting with Vanessa.” He replied, as if that explanation was enough to end the conversation.

I stared at him, stunned for a moment.

He actually said it with a straight face.

“Since when did you start working with her?” I couldn’t even mention her name again. “So you’re trying to say you had a business meeting overnight?”

“I can work with anybody. She needed my services and I was just doing my job.” He answered, his tone defensive. “And I didn’t have the business meeting overnight, it was late, so I had to crash at the hotel.”

It still felt so surreal.

This was his ex he was talking about. He knew how I was feeling about the situation and he still acted nonchalant about everything.

“Why couldn’t the meeting wait until this morning? Do you think I’m a fool, Grayson? You’ve been acting weird these past couple of weeks and all of a sudden you’re spotted with your ex.” I shook my head, my breathing heavy. “Now you expect me to believe that it was just a business meeting?”

He nodded casually. “Yes…it was a business meeting.” He muttered under his breath as he sat down on the bed. “Now, are you done interrogating me?”

My heart shattered into a million tiny pieces.

He didn’t even care to acknowledge the fact that he missed his daughter’s birthday dinner. I couldn’t recognize him anymore.

Grayson had turned into something else.

“Am I done interrogating you?” I repeated, my voice trembling with fury. “That’s what you think this is? An interrogation?”

He didn’t respond, he just pulled out his phone from his pocket and started scrolling through it like nothing I was saying mattered.

I couldn’t believe the level of disrespect.

“Grayson!” I snapped, my voice rising in anger. “You seriously expect me to believe that you missed Raven’s birthday because of a business meeting? Why are you lying to me even though you’ve been caught?”

Without hesitation, he snapped back. “The same way you’ve been lying to me for the past four weeks!”

My lips parted and I blinked.

What was he talking about?

Chapter 167Grayson Grant ~•~‘She finally said yes.’ Time seemed to freeze around me and my breath vanished as I read the caption on Zane’s new social media post. He didn’t show Tessa’s full face. He didn’t need to. Even from a mile away, I could recognize Tessa. My phone felt heavy in my hand. My chest tightened as a single, terrible question lodged itself in my mind. What did she say yes to? Getting married? I blinked hard, hoping I’d read it wrong. What the hell was going on? Didn’t they just meet each other like yesterday? Why were they moving really fast? I thought about calling Tessa. She told me she was really busy with work, but she lied to me. Tessa was busy preparing to go out with someone instead. I couldn’t understand why she lied to me. I was certain that her date wasn’t even over. Letting out a deep sigh, I looked at the picture and zoomed in on it. I wanted to figure out which restaurant they were having dinner at. But I couldn’t figure it out from tha

Chapter 166Tessa Ford ~•~“What do you want to talk about? I’m in the middle of something,” I asked Grayson as I applied foundation on my face. I was getting ready for dinner with Zane, and I didn’t need any distractions. “The nightclub. We have an official opening now, and I wanted to ask if you would want to attend.” My heart leaped for joy. “Are you serious?” I asked as if I didn’t hear him correctly the first time. “Yes. It feels so surreal because it took so much time. At some point, I even thought about giving up on it.” “I’m glad you didn’t,” I replied with a smile on my face. Ever since I advised Grayson not to listen to Vito when he threatened to report him to the authorities, I’d been scared. Vito was really upset when Grayson refused to give in to his impromptu demands. What if he had made things worse for Grayson? The fear had sat at the back of my mind for days. I felt like there was a bomb that was waiting to explode. But I felt relieved knowing that the compa

Chapter 165Tessa Ford ~•~“You really went one week without speaking to me? Now you’re showing up at my door for what?” I couldn’t hide the irritation in my voice as I glanced at Zane from head to toe. After he humiliated me at his office, I didn’t bother calling him anymore even though I was really tempted to. Every time my phone buzzed, I hoped it was from him, only to be disappointed when it turned out to be someone else. He didn’t bother to reach out to me. No calls. No texts. No nothing. But he wanted me to open my doors to him. “Tessa, you needed to see things from my point of view,” he replied, his voice almost a whisper. “Just let me inside so we can talk.” “Talk?” I scoffed bitterly. “Talk about what? When I went to your office to find you, you threatened to fire your receptionist because of me.” His face fell and he let out a defeated sigh. “I know, but I was hurting and I needed space.” I rolled my eyes. “Grown men don’t behave the way you did. Grown men communicat

Chapter 164Tessa Ford ~•~As I pulled into Zane’s driveway, I groaned and dropped my head against the steering wheel. What was I doing? What kind of woman had I become? Showing up at his office just because he refused to answer my calls or texts felt reckless. But I couldn’t stop myself. His silence was killing me. I stepped out of the car and made my way to the building. The receptionist asked me to wait in the lobby after I told her I wanted to see Zane. I was happy that he was at work. A few minutes later, she called me back and told me that Zane was swamped and wouldn’t be able to see me. My stomach dropped. He really didn’t want to talk to me. I knew he wasn’t swamped, it was just an excuse to make me leave. But I wasn’t leaving until I spoke to him. I didn’t drive all the way down to his company just to be ignored. “Please, can you tell him that it’s really important?” I begged, my voice almost cracked. She let out a deep sigh. “I don’t think it’s going to change an

Chapter 163Grayson Grant ~•~My chest ached as if something inside me had cracked. I thought I’d finally found a way to get Tessa back to me, but I only made things worse. Back at the restaurant, I could tell that she was pretty upset and jealous, even if I didn’t admit it to Davina. Throughout the night, I kept thinking about Tessa. I wanted to call her that night, but I decided to wait until it was morning. I thought our conversation would end with both of us confessing that we still had feelings for each other, but Tessa caught me off guard. All of a sudden, she started acting like she wasn’t bothered by my date anymore, and my chest twisted painfully when she mentioned that Zane was in the picture after I talked about feelings. When I saw the blog post earlier, I was the happiest person. I was so certain that it would cause a rift between her and Zane. But I was disappointed when she told me that everything was good between them. I knew I had been acting nonchalant and tr

Chapter 162Tessa Ford ~•~After dropping the kids off at school, I went straight to my office. I had a lot to work on, but the entire time I was distracted. I kept looking at my phone, I was hoping I would get a text from Zane. Or even from Grayson. It felt like I was about to lose my mind. But still, I forced myself to work on the dresses that I had to deliver to clients in a few days. After about three hours, I took a break. I had a quick snack and also tried calling Zane for the umpteenth time. I rolled my eyes when the call went straight to voicemail. What was I even expecting? Why did I think it would be different? Frustrated, I tossed my phone on the desk and grabbed a bottle of water. Just as I was about to open the bottle cap, my phone rang. I dropped the bottle quickly and reached for my phone. I thought it was Zane who was finally calling back but I was wrong. “Hey,” I whispered as the call connected. “I wanted to wait for you to cool down before reaching out to
