Chapter 1

Tessa Ford

~•~

“Where are you, Grayson? It’s almost eight and she has been waiting for you since five. Can you please pick up the damn phone?” I said through gritted teeth.

The automated voice followed right after.

“Your message has been recorded.”

I hung up with a sharp exhale, tossing the phone on the couch. I couldn’t believe Grayson, it was our daughter’s birthday and he wanted to disappoint her.

Grayson had been acting really weird for the past few weeks. At first, I thought it was just a phase because he was stressed with work.

But I knew it was more than that when he started shutting me out, barely speaking to me, coming home late, and treating me like we were just strangers living under the same roof.

I tried to be patient with him, I tried to talk to him, but he refused to open up about what was happening.

Instead, he continued acting cold and distant.

I just couldn’t believe that he would extend his harsh treatment to his daughter.

“Mommy.” Raven’s soft voice dragged me out of my thoughts. “Where is Daddy? The day is already getting dark and we are meant to go out for my birthday dinner.”

I lifted my head slowly and looked at her.

Raven stood there in her pink dress decorated with tiny ribbons, the one she had chosen because her Daddy got it for her during his last trip.

The two loose strands of her soft curls framed her face, and her hazel eyes shone with hope.

How could I tell her that her father wasn’t picking up the phone? He couldn’t even use work as an excuse because I reached out to his office and they said he had already clocked out for the day.

I let out a hollow sigh. “Come here, baby.” I gestured as I opened my arms widely. “I don’t think Daddy is going to make it for your dinner, so we can just go alone.”

Raven stopped in her tracks and her eyes glistened with tears immediately. “No! I want my Daddy!”

With that, she turned sharply and stormed over to her room.

My heart ached as I watched her leave.

I hated that she had to go through something like that. And the worst part was that I had no idea why Grayson was acting that way.

Why wouldn’t he talk to me anymore?

We used to be the perfect couple, how did things change so quickly? I leaned my back against the couch, running a hand through my hair in frustration.

A few seconds later, my phone buzzed.

I jerked up immediately and reached out for the phone, hoping it was Grayson who was finally calling me back.

But I let out a disappointed sigh when I saw my sister’s name flashing across the phone. It wasn’t like I wasn’t happy to hear from her, but I really hoped it was Grayson.

I swallowed hard, ignoring the lump that had formed in my throat.

“Sabine, hey.” My voice was barely above a whisper.

“Tessa, what’s going on? Is everything okay?”

“Grayson, he didn’t show up for Raven’s birthday dinner,” I muttered under my breath. “You needed to see how she reacted when I told her he couldn’t make it.”

Sabine was silent for a moment.

Then she cleared her throat and continued. “Is he still acting cold towards you?” She asked, her voice sympathetic.

I nodded. “Yes…and he still hasn’t told me what the issue is. He leaves the house really early and comes back really late.”

The thought about everything made my chest tighten. Even though I had been acting like I had everything under control, I was losing my mind deep down.

Grayson and I had been married for over three years and something like this had never happened before.

He was always sweet and kind. And we always tried our best to make sure we settled any of our differences before going to bed.

But whatever was happening right now had been going on for weeks. It wasn’t a joke anymore, my marriage was crumbling right before my eyes and I couldn’t do anything about it.

Sabine let out a wistful sigh. “But what do you think the issue is? Do you think he is seeing someone else?”

The signs were glaring, but I just didn’t want to believe that he was behaving that way because of another woman.

And I hadn’t seen any evidence, so I still wanted to give him the benefit of the doubt. Plus, I didn’t think he would totally abandon his daughter just because of another woman.

Grayson always treated Raven like a princess and made sure she was always happy. At some point, I was even worried that he was spoiling her too much.

“Tessa, are you still there?” Sabine asked, her voice laced with concern.

I rolled my eyes. I had no idea when I even zoned out of the conversation. “Yeah…” I replied, pushing my hair backwards. “I don’t know if he’s seeing someone else, Sabine.”

“You have to talk to him. You can’t continue living like this.” She continued, her voice solemn. “And you have to figure out if there’s another woman in the picture.”

I sighed. “I’m scared…I don’t want what happened last time to repeat itself.” I admitted, my voice low.

Without hesitation, Sabine responded. “You have a daughter this time around and you have to think about her.” She said, her voice quieter. “And you have to call him again, he needs to attend the birthday dinner.”

“Sure,” I murmured, my voice tired.

After the call ended, I dialed Grayson’s number for the umpteenth time. As usual, it went straight to voicemail.

It took everything in me to hold myself back from smashing the phone against the wall. I took multiple deep breaths to calm myself down before sending a text.

[ Grayson, call me back immediately. I can’t let you break my daughter’s heart like this.]

Just as I was about to drop the phone, my eyes drifted to the television. I hadn’t been paying attention to it because I was busy worrying about my daughter and marriage.

The volume was muted, but the bold headline running across the bottom of the news channel made my stomach churn.

“Billionaire CEO, Grayson Grant Spotted with Vanessa Harlow at Monarch Hotel.”

For a moment, I forgot how to breathe.

Chapter 167Grayson Grant ~•~‘She finally said yes.’ Time seemed to freeze around me and my breath vanished as I read the caption on Zane’s new social media post. He didn’t show Tessa’s full face. He didn’t need to. Even from a mile away, I could recognize Tessa. My phone felt heavy in my hand. My chest tightened as a single, terrible question lodged itself in my mind. What did she say yes to? Getting married? I blinked hard, hoping I’d read it wrong. What the hell was going on? Didn’t they just meet each other like yesterday? Why were they moving really fast? I thought about calling Tessa. She told me she was really busy with work, but she lied to me. Tessa was busy preparing to go out with someone instead. I couldn’t understand why she lied to me. I was certain that her date wasn’t even over. Letting out a deep sigh, I looked at the picture and zoomed in on it. I wanted to figure out which restaurant they were having dinner at. But I couldn’t figure it out from tha

Chapter 166Tessa Ford ~•~“What do you want to talk about? I’m in the middle of something,” I asked Grayson as I applied foundation on my face. I was getting ready for dinner with Zane, and I didn’t need any distractions. “The nightclub. We have an official opening now, and I wanted to ask if you would want to attend.” My heart leaped for joy. “Are you serious?” I asked as if I didn’t hear him correctly the first time. “Yes. It feels so surreal because it took so much time. At some point, I even thought about giving up on it.” “I’m glad you didn’t,” I replied with a smile on my face. Ever since I advised Grayson not to listen to Vito when he threatened to report him to the authorities, I’d been scared. Vito was really upset when Grayson refused to give in to his impromptu demands. What if he had made things worse for Grayson? The fear had sat at the back of my mind for days. I felt like there was a bomb that was waiting to explode. But I felt relieved knowing that the compa

Chapter 165Tessa Ford ~•~“You really went one week without speaking to me? Now you’re showing up at my door for what?” I couldn’t hide the irritation in my voice as I glanced at Zane from head to toe. After he humiliated me at his office, I didn’t bother calling him anymore even though I was really tempted to. Every time my phone buzzed, I hoped it was from him, only to be disappointed when it turned out to be someone else. He didn’t bother to reach out to me. No calls. No texts. No nothing. But he wanted me to open my doors to him. “Tessa, you needed to see things from my point of view,” he replied, his voice almost a whisper. “Just let me inside so we can talk.” “Talk?” I scoffed bitterly. “Talk about what? When I went to your office to find you, you threatened to fire your receptionist because of me.” His face fell and he let out a defeated sigh. “I know, but I was hurting and I needed space.” I rolled my eyes. “Grown men don’t behave the way you did. Chapter 164Tessa Ford ~•~As I pulled into Zane’s driveway, I groaned and dropped my head against the steering wheel. What was I doing? What kind of woman had I become? Showing up at his office just because he refused to answer my calls or texts felt reckless. But I couldn’t stop myself. His silence was killing me. I stepped out of the car and made my way to the building. The receptionist asked me to wait in the lobby after I told her I wanted to see Zane. I was happy that he was at work. A few minutes later, she called me back and told me that Zane was swamped and wouldn’t be able to see me. My stomach dropped. He really didn’t want to talk to me. I knew he wasn’t swamped, it was just an excuse to make me leave. But I wasn’t leaving until I spoke to him. I didn’t drive all the way down to his company just to be ignored. “Please, can you tell him that it’s really important?” I begged, my voice almost cracked. She let out a deep sigh. “I don’t think it’s going to change an

Chapter 163Grayson Grant ~•~My chest ached as if something inside me had cracked. I thought I’d finally found a way to get Tessa back to me, but I only made things worse. Back at the restaurant, I could tell that she was pretty upset and jealous, even if I didn’t admit it to Davina. Throughout the night, I kept thinking about Tessa. I wanted to call her that night, but I decided to wait until it was morning. I thought our conversation would end with both of us confessing that we still had feelings for each other, but Tessa caught me off guard. All of a sudden, she started acting like she wasn’t bothered by my date anymore, and my chest twisted painfully when she mentioned that Zane was in the picture after I talked about feelings. When I saw the blog post earlier, I was the happiest person. I was so certain that it would cause a rift between her and Zane. But I was disappointed when she told me that everything was good between them. I knew I had been acting nonchalant and tr

Chapter 162Tessa Ford ~•~After dropping the kids off at school, I went straight to my office. I had a lot to work on, but the entire time I was distracted. I kept looking at my phone, I was hoping I would get a text from Zane. Or even from Grayson. It felt like I was about to lose my mind. But still, I forced myself to work on the dresses that I had to deliver to clients in a few days. After about three hours, I took a break. I had a quick snack and also tried calling Zane for the umpteenth time. I rolled my eyes when the call went straight to voicemail. What was I even expecting? Why did I think it would be different? Frustrated, I tossed my phone on the desk and grabbed a bottle of water. Just as I was about to open the bottle cap, my phone rang. I dropped the bottle quickly and reached for my phone. I thought it was Zane who was finally calling back but I was wrong. “Hey,” I whispered as the call connected. “I wanted to wait for you to cool down before reaching out to
