Chris watched as Jack led Lilian away, his hand wrapped around hers like it was the most natural thing in the world. Irritation crept up his spine, twisting into something sharper, something unfamiliar. Why the hell did it bother him so much?

His fists clenched involuntarily. He hadn't even noticed until soft hands curled around his, grounding him.

"Are you okay?" Rita's voice was smooth and concerned, drawing him back from the unsettling thoughts swirling in his mind.

Chris turned to face her. Her beauty was striking as always, her features soft yet captivating. She’s the one I want, he reminded himself. Not Lilian. Never Lilian. It shouldn’t matter who held her hand. Who made her laugh. Who made her—

His jaw tightened.

"Yeah, I am," he muttered, forcing a smile. Rita returned it, and for a moment, he almost convinced himself that her smile was enough. That her touch was enough. That she was enough.

Then Lilian returned—still laughing, still at ease. And all his irritation came rushi

Kelvin stirred in bed with a jolt, the yell of the alarm clock shattering the thick blanket of sleep. His arms waved to silence it, and once the room was quiet again, shards of memory of the night before crawled their way into his sleep-shrouded mind. The memory hit him like a chill slap, and a shiver dripped down his spine. His heart thumped. What have I done?It was just about six. He threw the blankets off and sat on the edge of the bed, hands to his face, attempting to steady himself. His hands trembled. The fear, a dark presence, gripped his chest. He stood, stumbling into the bathroom, the steps heavy with fear. His face in the mirror surprised him—white, thin, and unrecognizable. Bloodshot eyes ringed with halos of sleep deprivation. The night before had made its mark on him in more than one way.The cold water slapped his face, icing the fear spreading inside his head for an instant. He shaved, the razor gliding over skin as he struggled to soothe his thoughts. What's next? Wh

Kelvin walked down the frozen sidewalk, his own air caught in his throat as the sharp blast drove icy rain into his face. The storm cloud gradually cleared, and every now and then the moon would interlope, making momentary spots of silver on the sodden sidewalk. Kelvin's boots splattered the sidewalk, water squelching round his ankles, but his thoughts were far removed from the rain. His head seethed with terror, horror, and a thousand ideas whirling in his brain at the same time. His ribcage thudded to the working heart, drowning out the thud of the rain, as every instinctive move urged him to get away in a hurry."He tried to convince himself they never could connect him with Evelyn's murder, but the words were hollow." I hadn't had motive. That's what matters.Motivation directs the police toward a suspect. Without it, they'll never come close." He had been drinking continually, brushing rain from his forehead with a trembling hand. But it was no motive whatsoever, was it?Kelvin w

Despite the cozy atmosphere of the restaurant and lively conversations, Lilian was not her usual calm self. With fingers bent to the edge of her napkin, she tried to follow along intently with Jack's bouncy summary of his present case, but couldn't keep up.Jack's eyebrows were raised as he hesitated in the middle of his sentence."Are you okay, Lilian? You seem nervous," he inquired softly"Nervous?" She stuttered.Nodding, his eyes focused on hers. Yes, you're nervous, and your eyes are constantly scanning the area. Aren't you having a good time?"She was overwhelmed by guilt. It was because she did not want to appear ungrateful. Should she say she felt comfortable or would she be lying?Jack's voice remained firm as he reassured her, "I am not going to be angry. I promise."She inhaled deeply and replied, "I am fond of you. I find this place uncomfortable.".He shook his head and asked, "You mean the restaurant?" with puzzlement."Yes. It's rather strange," she answered reassuringl

Kelvin stood still in the blackened apartment, his heart pounding loudly in his ears. Although the storm had passed, there was a palpable, strangling feeling of tension surrounding him. The only break in the quiet was the persistent, shrill sound of the telephone.Every jarring clanging of the telephone seemed to make Kelvin's chest tighter. He desperately thought all the occupants of the building could hear it. Why wouldn't it stop? Who could be calling at such a late time?He pulled his fingers, clenching the armrests of the chair. Think, Kelvin. Think. He couldn’t afford any more attention. He tried to ignore the sound, willing it to end. But it didn’t. The phone kept ringing repeatedly until he finally lost his temper. It felt as though a hammer was striking metal inside his head. Quickly, he sat up, expressing frustration with a grunt, and switched on the dim light beside him.Kelvin barely noticed as the glow spread shadows throughout the room. Quickly, he moved across the room

The aroma of the roses overpowered Lilian, who breathed deeply into her chest and felt a bit of sweetness and a rush. She smiled gently with her lips as her eyes twinkled with sensations she could not possibly put into words.Nobody has ever bought flowers for her in her entire life. Certainly not Chris. He believed that she was an anonymous presence, occupying space and dreaming up things he never intended to happen to her.She erased the stain with her blink. Her voice was thinner than he had anticipated, as she spoke barely above a whisper, "Let us just put them in water and then leave.".Slouching forward on her heels, she entered the kitchen carrying the bouquet as if it were holy. It possibly was. Small acts of goodness like these, perhaps, were the things she had always longed for and never got.And then she filled a crystal flower vase with water, stroking the stems softly and allowing the flowers to breathe. ". Upon her return, she also found Jack waiting patiently by the doo

Lilian moved back and forth in her bedroom like a lost leaf on a gentle stream of air. Her honey-colored face sparkled in the hot, dim room, but she barely noticed it. She was wound up and alive, brimming with expectation of something new.A date. With Jack.It had been a month since she was discharged from the hospital, the incident a memory she was learning to fold into the past. Physically, she was fine now. Emotionally? That was a different story. But something about Jack had given her breathing space—room to feel without pressure, to laugh without guilt, and to dream without fearing the sting of disappointment. He had asked her out a few days ago, and she’d said yes without overthinking it. That in itself felt like a small miracle. Now here she was, heart thudding like a war drum as she tried to decide whether her hair should be up or down.“Hair up or down?” she asked, staring into the phone screen during her video call with Patricia—Patty, as Lilian now affectionately called he
