Wren's Pov

At The Carpenter's Studio.

He didn't look like he belonged here. Staring at the man who sat before me, he looked nothing like the men who worked here.

While the rest wore overalls, with hands that looked like they were meant to be hidden in gloves, this man stood before me in a pristine, tailored suit, more like a freaking runway suit, and a white shirt.

Who wears a white shirt in a factory?

“Ms Wren...”

“Anderson,” I said, already hating the name.

“Right, Wren Anderson, we have looked through your resume, and I must say, it is quite odd that you have decided to work here.”

What did he want to hear? That I was pathetic and I was hoping this place would take me? “i think i just need a change in perspective, something that i haven't tried before,” i said giving him my best smile.

He nodded. “A change in perspective,” he hummed.

Why didn't he believe me? Shit! Did I ruin everything now?

“So, tell me what I should know about you, sports, relationships...” My brows furrowed when he talked about relationships; I didn't understand why he would ask me that. He cleared his throat. “We have had people resume for a day, and they live because they feel like their partners were threatened by their coworkers.”

I almost laughed at that. Relationship? Would it be better if I told him that my ex-boyfriend had broken up with me because he found me boring, or wait, what was that nice word he had used...

“Ms Wren?” He called out softly.

Shit! My eyes widened. “Sorry, I just... There is nothing that would come between me and the job,” I said in a fast tone.

If this was the only place that would accept me, then I was going to do everything in my power to have it.

He hummed, looking through the Papers. I cleared my throat. “Can I know what your medical insurance is like?”

His eyes scanned my form. Was I too fast? Should I have waited before talking about that? Fuck, please don't let me lose this job; this is the only thing that is keeping me close to being employed.

“Why?” He asked in a low tone.

“I... I, uhm, I just need to know if it covers a relative, maybe one?” My fingers crossed under the table as I waited to hear his reply.

“Unfortunately, no...” My heart sank. “But there is a position that I could offer, one that is better than what you are looking at, in here.”

I straightened my form. “I can do anything...” I stopped. That sounded too suggestive; there was one thing to show you needed a job, it was another to give off the desperate vibes. “What do you want me to do?” I asked.

“You will become my personal assistant.”

“Isn't that...”

“You will have access to a full medical grant, you will be travelling with me, and of course every other thing about your needs would be met.”

I could feel the tears brimming at the corners of my eyes. This couldn't be true. This was just too good to be true.

“Your personal assistant?” I asked. “What is the catch?”

He laughed. “No catch...”

“Is this some ploy to get me to sleep with you, because if you think...”

“Ms Wren, I would have you know that I have no interest in you. If I wanted a woman, I know just how to get them.”

Ouch! But at least he was honest.

“Your job starts at 8 am and will run over the course of the day until you are dismissed...”

“I haven't even told you if I accept the offer,” I said, cutting him off.

“And yet, you haven’t refused.”

Okay, he was one cocky person, and that reminded me of... no, I wasn't going to think about him. It was funny that he thought he would have me trapped. Joke's on him; I am getting a job, and when my credit score looks good, I am going to pay him off.

“Okay, I will be...”

He dropped a file before me. “Here, you will sign this, and we will get this started.”

I stared at the file he had dropped with the golden pen on top. “Shouldn't I have my lawyers here?” I asked.

“Can you afford one?”

I couldn't, but I knew better than to sign a document without legal advice. He must have seen the hesitation on my face, because he smiled. “Ms Wren, we have over a thousand applications waiting to be reviewed. If you think I will sit around and wait until you bring some bargain-bin lawyer, then I might as well reject you.”

I grabbed the document. “No, don't do that.” I quickly signed it. I wasn't going to risk the only place that has given me a second chance. And I wasn't working as a handyman; I was going to be his personal assistant.

When I signed the papers and pushed them towards him, he smiled. “This is good; you made a good choice.”

My heart tugged. Why did it feel like I had just signed away my life?

I looked around the room. “So do I get to walk around and maybe get familiar with the place?” I asked.

He tugged on his sleeves. “Oh, you are not working here, Ms Wren.”

“Where...”

“The address will be forwarded to you via your email, and I expect you to resume by 8 am, tardiness would not be appreciated.”

I nodded. His eyes scanned my form; I felt self-conscious under his stare. “We run a corporate environment, and that means you will have to change your wardrobe.” he wrote something down on a piece of paper. “Here, they will be expecting you.”

He didn't wait for me to say anything; he was already walking out of the conference room. I stared at his retreating figure, trying to understand how easy it had been for him to insult me without it sounding like an insult.

Wren's PovI stared at the paper in hand; from what I was seeing, it was obviously a fashion house. Was this going to be taken out of my salary or... I grabbed my phone; if there was someone who knew the corporate world, it was Anna.“Hey,” I whispered the minute she picked up the call.“Wren, I was just about to call you. How are you?” Her voice was loud, chirping. “How did it go? Did you get rejected again?” I heard a chuckle over the phone.A frown formed on my face. “Are you out?” I asked.“No, I am watching a show,” she muttered. It sounded like she was shuffling on the other side of the call.“Okay,” I muttered, fidgeting with the paper that was in my hand.“So, did you get rejected? What did they say?” she asked, sounding too eager.I cleared my throat. “I wasn’t rejected...”“You weren’t?” Her tone dripped with disbelief.I nodded before clearing my throat. “Yeah, I was...

Callum’s Pov“So, what now?” Mark asked, his eyes fixed on my screen as we watched Wren have her interview.I fought back the sour taste on my lips, angry at the fact that she looked exceptionally too good. I wasn't there to admire it; the man couldn’t even hide the fact that he was checking her out.“You have the contract with you, don’t you?" I asked, drawing my eyes from the screen. He hummed, pointing to the file he had dropped on the table. “Are you heading there now?” his voice dripped with curiosity as he watched my face.“you will take lead.” he opened his mouth to argue, but i was faster than him. “she hasn’t seen you before, if i walk in through that door, she is going to bolt, and you know that.”“So, I am what? Impersonating you?” I grinned, already giving him the answer he needed. He ran his hand over his face, letting out a frustrated sigh. “You know you are crazy, right?” he huffed.I let out a throaty laugh, leaning back on the chair. “Yes, but that isn’t going to ch

Wren’s Pov No one wants me. Maybe there was someone out there who had hexed the name Wren Anderson, because the minute anyone sees the name, they all have the same expression; a blanched look, before they say the same line that I have heard more times than I should.“We are sorry, we can’t hire you.”Seven companies, same story, same expression. It felt like my name was blacklisted. “This is going to be better; I promise you,” Anna’s voice echoed through the phone. I could tell she was trying so hard to encourage me, but I had lost hope in everything.“We said the same thing three jobs back and yet we are still searching.” She hummed, sounded distracted, “yes…yes,” her voice interrupted by the sound of kissing and her giggling.“Anna?” I frowned, wondering if she had company. “Are you busy or…” She cleared her throat, I heard a groan, an obvious sound that didn’t belong to her. Callum’s PovThere was a thin line between anger and lust. So, the word goes, right? I knew what I must do, but each second that I stared at the picture before me, I couldn’t stop thinking about that night. The way her body had writhed under me. The way she had moaned my name, begging me for more.“Fuck!” I hissed, tossing the paper to the side. Everything that I needed to know about Wren was on a freaking A4 page. And yet, there was nothing that said anything about how addicting she would become.Richard was still in fucking hiding or dead. That scum better be dead, because it would be easier to die than face the wrath that I was feeling. And Patricia? The woman who had left her children, I couldn’t help but laugh at the fact that she had first come to me to beg, slowly working herself to being my fiancée and when she had the opportunity, she played right into my hand.Just where I needed her.“Anything?” I grunted to my secretary as she walked into the office. Her smile brightened

Wren’s Pov“Anna….Mom…debt five million—”No matter how much I tried I couldn’t seem to get the words out. Sobs kept ripping through me, turning my sentences into short and meaningless phrases. I was curled on the floor of our tiny living room, phone pressed to my ear like a lifeline as I waited for her to reply. “Wren, breathe,” Anna said, her voice laced with worry. “Just breathe, okay? Calm down. Meet me at The Roasted Bean in twenty minutes. I’m already heading there.” I managed a shaky “okay” before she hung up. Without thinking I threw on one of the first clothes I could lay my hand on and by the time I dragged myself into The Roasted Bean, I probably looked like a wreck. I had avoided every mirror but I didn’t need any to tell me my eyes were swollen or that my hair was a tangled mess from running my hands through it. Even my clothes were all mismatched. I pushed the door open and every wa
