Chapter 1

The room went quiet for a moment.

Zeke clearly had not expected me to agree.

He frowned as if he wanted to say something. After a few seconds, he glanced at his friend, Ethan Calloway, then pushed a business card toward me.

Zeke called the man.

“You said your family has been pressuring you to get married, didn’t you?

“She’s the woman I wanted to introduce you to. Her name is Mia Sullivan. She has a PhD from a top university, and she’s a senior researcher at our lab. Talk to her and see how you two get along.”

After the man thanked him, Zeke ended the call and turned away.

If our mutual friend had not stopped him earlier, Zeke would have done what he always did.

He would have kept his distance and acted as if I did not exist.

The bitter taste of whiskey filled my mouth.

I dug my nails into my palm to keep my face under control.

When Ethan heard that I was willing to meet someone, he handed me another business card.

“He’s been asking me about you for a while, but you always refused to meet him.

“He’s a great guy. Mia, give him a chance.”

I instinctively looked over at Zeke.

He stood beside Mabel Lowell with a smile on his face. He did not spare me another glance.

One of Zeke’s friends had heard our conversation and laughed.

“Come on, Zeke! Everyone knows Mia sticks close to you because she likes you. Are you really going to set her up with someone else? That’s cold!”

“Exactly! She must’ve bought us thousands of cups of coffee over the past five years just to get on our good side. You never even gave her a chance.”

Mabel swirled her glass of drink. She raised an eyebrow and looked at him.

“Were you waiting for me to come back? How come you never told me how you felt?”

Zeke looked at her with an affectionate smile. “Of course. I just hadn’t gotten everything ready yet.

“You deserve the best.”

Mabel smiled from ear to ear.

His words left a lump in my throat.

When we got together, there was no confession and no grand romantic gesture.

Zeke had simply asked me, “Mia, do you like me?”

I had already been secretly in love with him for three years. When I nodded, he said, “We can be together, but I’m not going public with our relationship.

“If anyone finds out about us, we’re over.”

Back then, I was so happy to finally be with Zeke that I did not think twice about it.

I thought he had finally seen how much I loved him and that there would be a day when we could stop hiding our relationship.

I forced myself to fit in with Zeke’s circle of friends and kept hoping that one day he would introduce me as his girlfriend.

He never introduced me at all. He even pushed me toward another man just to make it clear that there was nothing between us.

I smiled bitterly.

When Ethan saw that I had added the man’s contact information, he looked relieved.

He smiled and said, “You always turned me down because you said you had a crush on someone else. But that guy has been stringing you along for years without ever committing to you. You should’ve moved on a long time ago!

“Trust me. You’ll like this guy.”

I lowered my head.

He was right. I should have moved on a long time ago.

After he said that, Ethan shot Zeke a subtle glance.

“Did he set you up with Richard Larson? Don’t meet him.

“He gets around. He’s been with quite a few models. Everyone in our circle knows his family has been pushing him to settle down for the past couple of years. He’ll marry just about anyone who agrees to marry him.”

Before Ethan left, he muttered under his breath, “How could Zeke say you two were a good match?”

My smile froze.

That was what Zeke meant by a “great match.” We were both desperate to get married.

A while ago, my family had started pressuring me to get married, so I messaged him.

I thought he would finally agree to make our relationship public and come home with me to meet my parents.

Instead, he ignored my messages and did not come home for an entire month.

If Zeke did not want to be part of my world, then I would not keep trying to force my way into his.

I turned around and left. I applied for a transfer out of Harbor City.

Just then, I saw a message from the man Ethan had set me up with.

“You promised me you’d wait for me while I was overseas.“Then, you got together with her and stayed with her for five years!“Was I not allowed to tell people?“Zeke, you used to like me! Weren’t you on my side that day too?”She threw her arms around Zeke.“Mia’s already married. You need to stop thinking about her.”Mabel tried to say more, but Zeke shoved her away. His eyes were red with anger. “Mabel, I let you stay here because you were my friend!“You were the one who asked me to propose to you and said it was only an act for your family so they’d stop pressuring you to get married. You promised to delete every photo and video from that day.“But you set the whole thing up to hurt Mia!”He packed up Mabel’s things and threw them out.“Go find somewhere else to stay!”Mabel teared up when she saw how cold Zeke had become toward her.She realized that he would not listen to any more of her explanations, so she left.Zeke spent the entire day making a list of every fr

Throughout the wedding, Zeke kept his eyes on me.He thought, ‘Mia looks beautiful in her wedding dress.‘She was supposed to be my woman.‘I was the one who lost her.’He could not bear to watch anymore. He stumbled out of the wedding.Zeke looked at his phone and opened the texts I had sent him before.I used to send him videos of interesting things. I sometimes sent him videos of cats playing in the street, pretty meals that looked delicious, and clouds in the sky that looked like hearts.Tears streamed down his face as he went through them.I had cared about him so much. He could not understand how I could suddenly stop wanting him or why I refused to give him another chance. He scrolled down and saw that he had barely replied to any of those messages.I had even sent him long texts about how my parents kept asking when I was going to get married. He had responded with a short reply.[I told you from the beginning that I wasn’t going to make our relationship public.]

It was a funny coincidence. That day, I went to a rooftop restaurant because Ethan had set me up with someone, and that person had requested to meet me there. When I arrived, I realized Yohan was sitting across from me.He smiled when he saw the shock and confusion on my face.“Mia, I knew you wouldn’t recognize me.“I even posted photos of myself as a kid on social media!“You still didn’t figure it out!”That was when I realized the guy Ethan had set me up with was Yohan, my old neighbor. He told me that he had been asking around about me for a long time.A while ago, he heard that someone had news about me, so he kept asking our mutual friends to introduce us.I turned him down every time.It was not until yesterday that I finally added him.Looking at Yohan brought back memories of our childhood. We had been neighbors for ten years. Before he moved away, he had cried and told me to remember him. That reminded Yohan of something else he wanted to ask me about.“Why di

Yohan Jackson stood in front of me. He looked at Zeke warily.“Mr. Lawson, I’ve met you at a few research conferences before. I know you’re Mia’s coworker.“Today is our wedding. If you’re here to celebrate with us, you’re welcome to stay.“If not, please leave.”With those few words, he made it clear that Zeke and I were nothing more than coworkers.Zeke’s face turned even paler. He had no way to argue with that. My family and friends were there, along with a few of my coworkers. Most of them had heard about how Zeke had publicly distanced himself from me at the lab a while ago. They were shocked to see him here today. With everyone watching, Zeke stopped. He hesitated and could not bring himself to take another step forward. He watched as Yohan and I exchanged our vows.Just before we exchanged rings, Zeke rushed forward. He grabbed the officiant’s microphone with teary eyes.“Mia, I was wrong.“I can’t see you marrying someone else. I only realized how I truly felt w

I recognized Zeke’s voice. “Did you need something?”I sat in the car on my way to the ceremony and spoke calmly.Zeke was usually the calmest person in any situation, but he sounded frantic.“You didn’t go to the house outside the city at all, did you? Mia, where are you? Did you really get married?“I went to Richard’s wedding. The bride wasn’t you!“Mia, who did you marry?”His voice rose as he demanded an answer.“Who I’m marrying is none of your business.”All the anger in Zeke’s voice vanished.“Mia, I know you’re hurt because I never made our relationship public, but you can’t treat marriage like a joke. You can’t marry someone you’ve only known for two weeks!”His voice shook.“We’ve been together for five years. Are you really ending things with me just because I never made our relationship public?”He sounded like he was both scolding and blaming me. I could not help but sneer.“Who are you to question me about who I decide to marry?”Silence filled the other en

Zeke froze for a moment and held the phone closer to his ear.“What wedding car?”He frowned, but no one answered. Then, he glanced at his phone and realized the call had already ended. He thought, ‘Did Mia get married? No way! Richard has such a terrible reputation. There’s no way she’d agree to marry him.’Even though Zeke knew that, he could not shake the strange sense of panic that had come over him.For the next thirty minutes, he kept making mistakes. He copied the experimental data wrong more than a dozen times.Zeke hurried to check my social media, only to find that I had already blocked him.He called me again, but I did not answer. He had no choice but to check Richard’s social media. The first thing he saw was a wedding announcement.[We’re getting married!]The posts showed the wedding decorations and invitations.
