  • My Boyfriend's Brother   Chapter 52

The Hartmann dinner, on Sunday night, was held in a restaurant that sat on the water like a swan.Twelve of us at a long table. Candles in low glass. Julien at the head, and halfway down the opposite side Rhett and Sophie, side by side, her dark green dress fitting her like a decision. I had been put at Julien's right hand. The place cards, in his flowing script, had been rearranged. He caught my eye as I read mine, and didn't even try to look innocent."Everyone, this is Sophie," Rhett said, with the stiff formality of a man introducing his own hostage. "My fiancée.""Nova's told me all about you," said one of the Hartmann women. "How lovely that you could come.""She's been very kind." Sophie turned her smile on me. "Nova takes such lovely care of him. I don't know what he'd do without her."It was warm. It had a thorn in it so small I could have been imagining it, and every person at that table smiled at me like I'd been given a prize. The railway man sat across from me. At my left

Saturday began the way I'd wanted it to.Madame Fournier handed me an apron at five and said "Allez," and I fell into it. I made forty rolls, twelve baguettes, and a tray of apple tarts I was told, in three languages, not to look at too long. The oven roared. The window fogged. For two hours I didn't think about anything except temperature. Then the first customers came in, bleary and grateful, and I wrapped bread in paper and said bonjour with a terrible accent, which Madame Fournier corrected twice and then gave up on, and an old man in a flat cap said "Merci, mademoiselle" like I'd handed him something valuable.Madame Fournier watched me from the other end of the bench and said nothing, which was how she said most things. I was happy. That was the awful part. I was happy, and also something else, a heavy little stone in the bottom of the happiness that I kept stepping around.Rhett had gone out at eight with Sophie. I'd watched them leave. She wore the pale blue scarf. She had tuc

"Oh," Sophie said, taking in the room. "I'm interrupting."She said it brightly. Her eyes went to the pages on the floor, to the blanket round my shoulders, to the two mugs, and then rested on me a fraction longer than anywhere else."We were working," Rhett said."I can see that." She stepped past him into the flat and put her arms round his neck, and he stood in the circle of them like a man being measured for a suit. "Darling. Your face. You look terrible.""I haven't slept.""Clearly. Surprise, by the way." She kissed his cheek and turned to the porter. "Just the hall, thank you. We'll sort the rest."Rhett closed the door. "You should have told me you were coming.""That's the point of the word, Rhett." She laughed, easily, and shrugged out of the camel coat. "The doctor cleared me to fly. I woke up this morning and thought, what's the use of being engaged if I never see my fiancé? So I booked it.""When?""Last night.""At what time?""Does it matter?" She tilted her head at him

The Belvoir deal fell apart on Wednesday at four in the afternoon. Not entirely. Not loudly. A clause in the supplier schedule came back from Hartmann's lawyers with a new date, and the new date broke three others, and by five Rhett was standing at the window of the boardroom with his hands in his pockets, saying very quietly, "No.""It's fixable," Julien said, from the end of the table."I know it's fixable.""It'll take a week.""I know how long it'll take."We went back to the flat at eight and spread the whole file across the floor, because the table was too small. Pages, tabs, highlighters, a cold pizza neither of us touched. Rhett sat with his back against the sofa. I sat across from him with my knees pulled up. He read. I marked. For hours there was nothing in the world except clause numbers and the sound of paper. At half past eleven he took off his glasses. I hadn't known he wore glasses. He pinched the bridge of his nose and let out a breath that sounded like it had been hel

"Two Saturdays a month," Julien said. "Maybe three. She'll pay you in bread and abuse, and in cash, if you push.""Madame Fournier wants me to work for her.""Madame Fournier wants to adopt you. I'm translating down." He leaned back in his chair, enjoying the look on my face. "She's never offered anyone a Saturday. I'd have taken it myself at nineteen, if I could knead."We were in a small restaurant at the edge of the lake, cold glass and candles, and for the first hour I'd been bracing for a speech. Instead he had talked about the time he tried to sell a Swiss watch to a Swiss man and was told, politely, to leave the country. I'd laughed until I had to put down my fork. Halfway through the main course he'd glanced at his phone, smiled to himself, and turned it face up on the cloth so I could read it.*Fine.*A full stop and nothing else."Who's that?""Rhett. I sent him the name of the restaurant and the time I'd have you home. For his peace of mind.""You did what?""He replied in

Amara's face filled the laptop screen, lit from below by a bowl of noodles. "You look different," she said. "Tanned. No, that's wrong. Rested. You look rested, and I resent it." "It's cloudy here every day." "Then it's love." "It's sleep, Amara." "That's what love looks like at your age." She slurped. Behind her, in the dim open-plan office, a figure in a hoodie waved at the camera. "Dylan says hi. He also says your plant died, and he wants it noted that it wasn't his fault." "It was a cactus." "He says it died of loneliness." "Tell him that's not a thing." "He's very emotional about this." She dropped her voice, and the teasing went out of it. "Right. Real news. Warren's changed the pool to 'by Christmas' because everyone thinks the wedding's moving. Is it moving?" "It's moved. Six weeks." "Six." She put down her chopsticks. "Okay. That's quick. That's very quick. I'm not going to say anything." "Thank you." "I'm going to say one thing. Margaret, Gerald's PA, was in the k
