Chapter 1

Mr. Jude was startled for a moment. He adjusted his gold-rimmed glasses and studied me for two seconds before nodding. “All right.”

Grayson Zane whipped around to look at me. His lips moved soundlessly, his eyes filled with disbelief.

I did not look back at him.

“Grayson, what do you think?” asked Mrs. Hayes, the director, as she bent down with a smile on her face.

“I’ll go home with Mr. and Mrs. Warren, who run the auto shop!” Grayson’s voice trembled as he threw himself at them. “I really like you both! And I love cars too. I promise I’ll be a good boy!”

Mr. Warren rubbed his oil-stained hands against his pants over and over before finally daring to pat Grayson on the shoulder.

“Good boy. If you’d like to learn how to fix cars, I’ll teach you everything I know!”

Mrs. Warren immediately pulled Grayson into her arms. The plastic bag slipped from her hand and rolled across the ground, sending a few oranges tumbling out. Her eyes turned red. “Oh, you poor sweetheart. Aren’t you just precious?”

I stood beside Mr. Jude and watched them embrace. A faint ache stirred in my chest.

In the previous life, those same hands had taken me away from the orphanage. They taught me how to tighten bolts, change tires, and diagnose problems just by listening to the engine.

Everything my adoptive father taught me was enough to carry me through two lifetimes.

This time, Grayson was going with them instead, and that was fine. Grayson and I grew up together. He was not a bad person by nature. He simply wanted a warm, lively family, and I knew that.

“Your name’s Huxley?” Mrs. Jude looked down at me. “Are your things packed?”

“Yes.”

“Then let’s go.” She turned around and walked away. The sharp click of her leather shoes echoed through the hallway.

Mr. Jude picked up my duffel bag for me.

As we passed Grayson, he was clinging to Mr. Warren’s arm, sobbing so hard that his whole body shook. Tears and snot covered his face.

Mrs. Warren wiped his face as she laughed. “Silly boy, you have a family now. What are you crying for?”

Once we stepped outside the orphanage, Mr. Jude pressed a button on his key fob. Two yards away, a black SUV beeped.

Mrs. Jude opened the rear door and said, “Get in.”

I climbed inside. The leather seat felt cool against my skin, and the car smelled faintly of pine.

Mrs. Jude got into the passenger seat and turned to me. “Your room is ready. If you need anything, just tell Mrs. Quinn.”

Her tone was polite, as though she were welcoming a young guest into her home.

“Thank you, Mrs. Jude.”

She nodded and said nothing more.

Mr. Jude started the engine. Its deep rumble filled the car.

By the iron gate, Mrs. Warren was carrying Grayson out of the orphanage while Mr. Warren followed behind with his duffel bag.

I leaned back in my seat and watched the iron gate of the orphanage grow smaller and smaller in the rearview mirror.

I was grateful to the Warrens for taking care of me in my previous life. This time, Grayson would be there to keep them company.

I quietly let out a sigh of relief.

My new life had just begun.

…

Mrs. Quinn was waiting for us at the entrance of the mansion. She wore a gray uniform with a neatly tied apron. When she saw me, she put on a smile.

“Huxley, you’re here. Your room is upstairs, the one facing south. You’ll get plenty of sunlight in the morning.”

“Thank you.”

She reached out and took the duffel bag from my hands.

Mrs. Jude slipped off her coat and hung it in the foyer. Without turning around, she said, “Mrs. Quinn, keep dinner light. Huxley is still growing.”

“Of course, ma’am. There’ll be herb-roasted fish, vegetable soup, and a light egg dish.”

I followed Mrs. Quinn upstairs. The solid-wood staircase creaked softly beneath our feet.

When Mrs. Quinn pushed open the door, I stood there for a moment, stunned. An entire rack of tools lined the wall, not toys.

Wrenches, socket sets, screwdrivers, torque wrenches, and multimeters… Each tool hung neatly from its own hook, polished to such a shine that it caught the light.

I lowered my head and ate another rib.It tasted exactly like it had in my previous life. The sauce had been reduced to just the right consistency, and even after biting through the meat, there was still savory juice tucked inside the bone.Halfway through the meal, Grayson suddenly stood up.“I gotta grab something!” He ran into the back room. After a long bout of rummaging and banging around, he came back carrying a metal box. He opened it. Inside was a thick stack of papers. He pulled out the top sheet and handed it to me.“You remember that engine cross-section you drew a while back? I copied it. Then I added the wiring for the electronic control system.”I took the drawing.Beside the mechanical components I sketched, he used a red pen to add the ECU wiring and sensor locations. The drawing was incredibly detailed. Every line was clearly labeled with its function. He did not understand the engine’s specific control logic yet, but he had gotten every sensor placement right—

“Sign it.”I took the fountain pen.Mr. Jude's warmth still lingered on the barrel.I leaned over and wrote three characters in the signature field at the end of the report: [Huxley Lowe.]My strokes were a little unsteady, but it was clear.Mr. Jude tucked the report into his briefcase. He stood and walked over to the window, then pushed it open. “We’ll head to the factory tomorrow. They’re installing a new test stand. I want you there to see it.”“Okay.”…Grayson sent me a photo of a string of warm holiday lights glowing above the auto shop’s entrance. He stood underneath them, flashing a peace sign. The caption read: [Holidays are here! My mom wants to know when you’re coming!]I replied to him: [New Year’s Eve.]He said: [Perfect! We’ll have ribs and steak! Just get yourself here!]I read the message, then set my phone down beside my pillow. The moon slipped through a gap in the clouds and cast a pale glow across the windowsill.I rolled over and closed my eyes. The s

I did not look up.The layer of black residue I scraped off in the workshop had already told me everything I needed to know about the carbon-deposit data from those 52 samples. However, Mr. Jude needed numbers on paper. Now, he had them. The board believed them, and the injectors would be redesigned. The cars would not start throwing warning lights across the board during their first year on the market. Mr. Warren would not have to deal with a flood of repair orders with customers saying, “The injector on my car is clogged.”…A new batch of Jude Corporation’s 1.5-liter turbo engine prototypes went into testing. The new injectors had 0.22-millimeter nozzle openings. The baffle tolerances had been revised, and the ECU’s fuel-injection pulse-width correction factor was recalibrated. The engine ran for five hundred hours on blended commercial fuel at the test stand. The day the results came in, Mr. Jude brought the report home. He placed it on the dining table and stood there fo

However, based on the remaining half of the markings and the way the circuit board was laid out, I could make a pretty good guess. It looked a lot like the ECU control-board design used in Jude Corporation’s 1.5-liter turbo engines.Could it be from the same supplier?“Grayson, what car is this ECU from?”“No idea. Mr. Warren said someone had it towed in for scrap. It’s from a 2012 model.”“Can I see the VIN?”“The car’s gone. This is all that’s left.”I turned the board over in my hands several times.I checked the traces, the capacitor layout, and the placement of the chips. The more I looked, the more it resembled the ECU used in Jude Corporation’s older engines. If it really was the same design, I should remember the part number of that MOSFET. In my previous life, I had repaired this exact board more than ten times.“IRFZ44N,” I said.“Huh?”“The burned-out MOSFET. I think the part number is IRFZ44N. Here, the pad spacing and package size match, and the letters left on

It was fully dark by the time the car headed toward the Jude residence. I closed my eyes, but I could still hear the sound of the auto shop’s metal roll-up door in my ears. It was that screeching, rattling sound.…During the board meeting, Mr. Jude proposed a durability-testing program using commercially available fuel.Mrs. Jude told me about it while I was changing Sebastian Jude’s diaper.Sebastian was four months old now. He lay in his crib, kicking his little legs and babbling softly.“Your dad’s coming home late today. The board meeting ran until 6:30 pm.”“Did they approve the proposal?”“They did.” Mrs. Jude picked Sebastian up and gently patted his back. “Hold him for a bit. I’m going to warm up his milk.”I took Sebastian into my arms. He was soft and warm, and his bright black eyes were fixed curiously on me. I supported the back of his head and rested him against my shoulder.I whispered near his ear, “Sebastian, do you want to take apart engines when you grow up

I answered, “I was just passing by. What are you working on?”“Mr. Warren had me refurbish these old wheels and put them up for sale online!” Grayson pulled me toward the shop. “Look at this. Pretty damn good, right?”Mr. Warren poked his head out from under the hood of a car. There was a streak of black grease across his face, and his padded jacket was zipped all the way to the top.“Huxley’s here? Come in and sit down. Mrs. Warren went out to buy groceries. She’ll be back soon to make dinner.”“Mr. Warren, please go ahead. Don’t mind me.”Grayson dragged over a chair for me. Then he pulled a bottle of soda from the cooler, popped it open with a sharp crack, and handed it to me. “Here, I saved this one for you!”I took it and had a sip. It was cold and sweet. The heater kept the shop nice and warm, and the clock on the wall ticked steadily.Behind Mr. Warren, a row of wrenches hung on the wall. It was the exact same kind of setup as the one in my room at the Jude residence. St
