Chapter 2

Author: A Sheep
In the corner stood a small engine teardown stand. Beside it were brand-new protective gloves and safety goggles.

“Mr. Jude said you like cars.” Mrs. Quinn smiled. “He had these brought in especially for you. He said you could take things apart and tinker with them whenever you had nothing else to do.”

I walked over to the tool rack and let my fingers glide over the row of wrenches. It was a complete set, the exact same kind I used at the auto shop in my previous life. Even the brand was the same. He had chosen sizes that fit my hands perfectly.

“Do you like them?” I did not notice when Mrs. Jude appeared in the doorway.

I turned around. She leaned against the doorframe, her expression as reserved as ever. However, I noticed her fingers tapping lightly against the wood. She was waiting for my answer.

“I like them.” I nodded, a little more emphatically than necessary. “I really like them.”

Something softened in her expression, just barely. “That’s all that matters. Dinner in an hour.”

She turned around and headed downstairs. Her footsteps were almost silent.

I stood in front of the tool rack and slipped on the protective gloves. It was a 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine.

I ran my fingers along the cylinder wall. The wear was even. The piston rings could easily last another 50,000 miles.

…

Dinner was quiet.

Mr. and Mr. Jude occasionally exchanged a few words in low voices, but it was all about work—things like hybrid platform development, dyno testing schedules, and third-quarter production ramp-up.

I took a bite of the egg while listening carefully.

“By the way…” Mason set down his cutlery. “Huxley, what would you like to learn?”

“I’d like to learn how to take apart engines.” I set down my spoon. “I’d like to start with the basics.”

The two exchanged a glance.

I said, “I can do it. I know how to use the tools.”

Mr. Jude studied me for two seconds before smiling. It was a faint smile, but I caught it.

He slid his phone across the table. On the screen was a cross-sectional diagram of an engine, every component labeled with a number.

“Learn the parts first. Once you can name a hundred of them, I’ll teach you how to tear down your first engine.”

“Okay.”

Mrs. Jude placed a piece of fish on my plate. Her movements were gentle, almost as though she was afraid of disturbing something.

I lowered my head and ate the fish. It was incredibly tender, nothing like the fish Mr. Warren used to pan-fry in an aluminium pot in my previous life.

However, I liked both.

After dinner, I went back to my room and texted Grayson: [Are you there yet?]

It took him more than ten minutes to reply.

[Yes, I’m here.]

He sent a photo with it. Grayson was sitting on an old couch inside the auto shop. Behind him, tires, oil drums, and rows of wrenches hung along the walls.

Mr. Warren stood beside him, holding up a bottle of soda. His face was creased with a broad, genuine smile.

Mrs. Warren was carrying dishes over to the coffee table. An aluminum pot, enamel bowls, and sturdy ceramic dishes crowded the table, packed together in a cozy, overflowing jumble.

I stared at the photo for a long time. Then I replied: [Great.]

Grayson immediately called me.

“Huxley, you have no idea how awesome it is here!” Grayson’s voice was brimming with excitement. “Mr. Warren just taught me how to take a tire off! I didn’t have enough strength, so he found me a breaker bar! One twist and the lug nuts came right off!”

“Just be careful.”

“Don’t worry! Mrs. Warren made me tea. She said cold hands can mess up your tendons!” I could hear him crunching on something. “How about you? Are you having good food over there?”

“I had some fish. Herb-roasted fish.”

“No meat, huh?” He lowered his voice and continued, “Mr. Warren says he’s taking me out for roasted lamb shank the day after tomorrow. Jealous?”

“Not really.”

“Oh, get out of here!” I could hear him giggling on the other end. “Uh… Thank you. Thanks for letting me have them. Anyway, I’m going to help Mr. Warren move some tires. Talk later!”

The call ended.

I gripped my phone and leaned back against the headboard.

Outside the window, the streetlights glowed, casting long, slender shadows from the wrenches on the tool rack.

I got out of bed and walked over to the engine diagram. Then I started counting the parts. One, two, three… I had reached seven when Mrs. Quinn knocked and stepped inside.

She was carrying a glass of warm milk. “Huxley, have some of this if you can’t sleep. Mrs. Jude asked me to bring it up.”

“Thank you, Mrs. Quinn.”

She glanced at the diagram on the wall and smiled. “Working this hard already?”

I lowered my head and ate another rib.It tasted exactly like it had in my previous life. The sauce had been reduced to just the right consistency, and even after biting through the meat, there was still savory juice tucked inside the bone.Halfway through the meal, Grayson suddenly stood up.“I gotta grab something!” He ran into the back room. After a long bout of rummaging and banging around, he came back carrying a metal box. He opened it. Inside was a thick stack of papers. He pulled out the top sheet and handed it to me.“You remember that engine cross-section you drew a while back? I copied it. Then I added the wiring for the electronic control system.”I took the drawing.Beside the mechanical components I sketched, he used a red pen to add the ECU wiring and sensor locations. The drawing was incredibly detailed. Every line was clearly labeled with its function. He did not understand the engine’s specific control logic yet, but he had gotten every sensor placement right—

“Sign it.”I took the fountain pen.Mr. Jude's warmth still lingered on the barrel.I leaned over and wrote three characters in the signature field at the end of the report: [Huxley Lowe.]My strokes were a little unsteady, but it was clear.Mr. Jude tucked the report into his briefcase. He stood and walked over to the window, then pushed it open. “We’ll head to the factory tomorrow. They’re installing a new test stand. I want you there to see it.”“Okay.”…Grayson sent me a photo of a string of warm holiday lights glowing above the auto shop’s entrance. He stood underneath them, flashing a peace sign. The caption read: [Holidays are here! My mom wants to know when you’re coming!]I replied to him: [New Year’s Eve.]He said: [Perfect! We’ll have ribs and steak! Just get yourself here!]I read the message, then set my phone down beside my pillow. The moon slipped through a gap in the clouds and cast a pale glow across the windowsill.I rolled over and closed my eyes. I did not look up.The layer of black residue I scraped off in the workshop had already told me everything I needed to know about the carbon-deposit data from those 52 samples. However, Mr. Jude needed numbers on paper. Now, he had them. The board believed them, and the injectors would be redesigned. The cars would not start throwing warning lights across the board during their first year on the market. Mr. Warren would not have to deal with a flood of repair orders with customers saying, “The injector on my car is clogged.”…A new batch of Jude Corporation’s 1.5-liter turbo engine prototypes went into testing. The new injectors had 0.22-millimeter nozzle openings. The baffle tolerances had been revised, and the ECU’s fuel-injection pulse-width correction factor was recalibrated. The engine ran for five hundred hours on blended commercial fuel at the test stand. The day the results came in, Mr. Jude brought the report home. He placed it on the dining table and stood there fo

However, based on the remaining half of the markings and the way the circuit board was laid out, I could make a pretty good guess. It looked a lot like the ECU control-board design used in Jude Corporation’s 1.5-liter turbo engines.Could it be from the same supplier?“Grayson, what car is this ECU from?”“No idea. Mr. Warren said someone had it towed in for scrap. It’s from a 2012 model.”“Can I see the VIN?”“The car’s gone. This is all that’s left.”I turned the board over in my hands several times.I checked the traces, the capacitor layout, and the placement of the chips. The more I looked, the more it resembled the ECU used in Jude Corporation’s older engines. If it really was the same design, I should remember the part number of that MOSFET. In my previous life, I had repaired this exact board more than ten times.“IRFZ44N,” I said.“Huh?”“The burned-out MOSFET. I think the part number is IRFZ44N. Here, the pad spacing and package size match, and the letters left on

It was fully dark by the time the car headed toward the Jude residence. I closed my eyes, but I could still hear the sound of the auto shop’s metal roll-up door in my ears. It was that screeching, rattling sound.…During the board meeting, Mr. Jude proposed a durability-testing program using commercially available fuel.Mrs. Jude told me about it while I was changing Sebastian Jude’s diaper.Sebastian was four months old now. He lay in his crib, kicking his little legs and babbling softly.“Your dad’s coming home late today. The board meeting ran until 6:30 pm.”“Did they approve the proposal?”“They did.” Mrs. Jude picked Sebastian up and gently patted his back. “Hold him for a bit. I’m going to warm up his milk.”I took Sebastian into my arms. He was soft and warm, and his bright black eyes were fixed curiously on me. I supported the back of his head and rested him against my shoulder.I whispered near his ear, “Sebastian, do you want to take apart engines when you grow up

I answered, “I was just passing by. What are you working on?”“Mr. Warren had me refurbish these old wheels and put them up for sale online!” Grayson pulled me toward the shop. “Look at this. Pretty damn good, right?”Mr. Warren poked his head out from under the hood of a car. There was a streak of black grease across his face, and his padded jacket was zipped all the way to the top.“Huxley’s here? Come in and sit down. Mrs. Warren went out to buy groceries. She’ll be back soon to make dinner.”“Mr. Warren, please go ahead. Don’t mind me.”Grayson dragged over a chair for me. Then he pulled a bottle of soda from the cooler, popped it open with a sharp crack, and handed it to me. “Here, I saved this one for you!”I took it and had a sip. It was cold and sweet. The heater kept the shop nice and warm, and the clock on the wall ticked steadily.Behind Mr. Warren, a row of wrenches hung on the wall. It was the exact same kind of setup as the one in my room at the Jude residence. St
